The Moon Color Chainon Animation Music Video shows us many spoilers for the Sailor Moon Eternal films

Sailor Moon Eternal is now out in Japanese theatres. Those of us outside of Japan are still hoping for news of when the movie will be out in their area. If you’re looking for a 4 minute and 20 second video which gives clips from throughout the entire movie I’ve got some good news for you! An “Animation Music Video” of the Momoiro Clover Z song Moon Color Chainon, the theme song for Sailor Moon Eternal, has been released. The entire video is footage from Sailor Moon Eternal. This seems to be mostly from Part 1 but it seems like this includes some scenes from Part 2. This is a mix of old footage and a ton of newer footage not in previously trailers and officially released clips. Be warned there’s everything in this. Every character people got annoyed at me for posting screencaps of is in this. If you haven’t read the Dream arc of the manga and don’t want to be spoiled for the films, don’t watch the clip which I’ve embedded below!

Of course at this point none of this is “new” footage as the first movie is actually out. I haven’t seen the film yet! I’m really looking forward to seeing a decent version of it, hopefully on Netflix some time soon, but I haven’t been watching the low quality cam footage which can be found if you spend a bit of time looking.

I figure this video is also on the Blu-Ray which comes with the Moon Color Chainon CD/Blu-Ray combo which came out a couple of days ago. My copy of both of the albums is in the mail somewhere in Cincinnati and I’ll be doing a review after I receive it at some point. I’ve got a big move coming up so my posting may slack a bit in the next few weeks but I’ll get around to it when I can.

Lots of fun stuff in here! What’s your favourite part? Young Rei and Usagi are very cute. Human Artemis and fairy Phobos and Deimos are cool! Chibiusa kissing the horse is always funny. Those cats are looking bad ass!

Phobos is Red, Deimos is Purple

An age old controversy may have finally been answered as the Sailor Moon Eternal film has weighed in on the issue of the colour of Phobos and Deimos’s clothes! Phobos and Deimos are Rei’s crows. In the Dreams arc of the manga, and the first Sailor Moon Eternal film, we see their humanoid fairy forms. A quiz in the Sailor Moon Eternal magazine, which I posted photos of recently, asked which character was Phobos and which was Deimos. The only noticeable difference between the two is the colour of their clothes. So which is it? The answer has been a mystery until now. The Sailor Moon Eternal film, now in theatres, settles it. Phobos is red and Deimos is purple!

Twitter user @oozorakeroko2 posted that the answer as to what colour they were had been answered in the film but did not not state what that was! Earlier today Twitter user @KrissyDiggs shared a few photos of a promo packet which she got at a screening of the film. One such photo was a bio for Sailor Mars which included a colour image of Phobos and Deimos with their names under it. She then posted a close up photo of the two. The caption suggests that Phobos is red and Deimos is purple!

Why do I state that this mystery has been going on for so long? The Sailor Moon manga is black and white so throughout the Dream and Stars arcs in which Phobos and Deimos appear we can never see the colour of their clothing. There are two colour images of the two which have been drawn by Naoko Takeuchi and those gives conflicting information.

The first such image, seen in the February 1996 issue of Nakayoshi and later reprinted in the Sailor Moon Original Picture Collection Vol. IV art book, tells us that Phobos is purple and Deimos is red (PIPDIR).

A year later an image from the 1997 issue of Nakayoshi tells a different story. This image was reprinted in the Sailor Moon Original Picture Collection Vol. V art book and states that Phobos is actually red while Deimos is purple (PIRDIP). It seems that Sailor Moon Crystal canon agrees with this later interpretation of their colours. Will this settle the question once and for all or will fans continue to argue about their manga colours for years to come?

Phobos

This whole thing is reminiscent of the Transformers controversy with regards to the colours of Soundwave’s Transforming Mini-Cassettes Frenzy and Rumble. For the toys Frenzy is Blue, Rumble is Red (FIBRIR) while in the animated series Frenzy is Red, Rumble is Blue (FIRRIB).

Deimos

A Facebook post by actor Mario Arenas, the Spanish voice of Tuxedo Mask, suggests that Sailor Moon Eternal has been dubbed by Netflix

More evidence has been found that suggests quite strongly that the Sailor Moon Eternal films, the first of which has been released in theatres in Japan, will be released to stream on Netflix outside of Japan. The post in question, which was shared to me by the SailorMoonOoC Twitter account, is a message posted by voice actor Mario Arenas on Facebook. In the post, which is in Spanish, he thanks Netflix for the opportunity to reprise his role as Tuxedo Mask. The original post, which was public at the time when the screenshot was taken, no longer exists and the Facebook profile for Mario Arenas Torres is currently unavailable. I do not speak or read Spanish however I transcribed the message and translated it via Google translate. It isn’t perfect, but it gives us a good idea of what is being said.

The other day life gave me a dubbing (the movie of Sailor moon, character, the lord of the mask). I want to thank Netflix who insisted on finding the original voices for the series; Cecilia Santiago, director of the dubbing that I take on a fly; Carmen from production who treated me like a rock star; to the technician who put all the meat on the grill and finally thanks to Sonygraf.

This pretty clearly indicates that Mario Arenas was reprising the role of Tuxedo Mask for Netflix, who made an effort to use the original voice actors from this Spanish version of the series. Note that this is for the European Spanish version of the dub, from Spain, and not the Latin American version, from Mexico. Mario Arenas provided the voice of Tuxedo Mask for the dubs of Sailor Moon S and SuperS. While he was not involved with the dub of Sailor Stars that series was dubbed in Spanish with Ángel Sacristán recording the few lines Tuxedo Mask has in that season. It’s worth noting that Mario Arenas did not provide the voice of Tuxedo Mask for earlier episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal. That role was done by Gerardo Reyero who was the voice of Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon R. Apologies if some of those specifics are incorrect as I’m getting some conflicting sources on some of that information. The important part as it relates to this message is that this recording could only be about the Sailor Moon Eternal films as all other episodes of Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal had already been dubbed prior to this December 18th Facebook post.

This seems like a pretty compelling piece of evidence. Unfortunately with the post no longer being publicly available I can’t verify its authenticity beyond any doubt. I have seen two different screenshots of it taken at different times which suggests it is authentic. One is from the Twitter post mentioned earlier and the other is from this December 26th Facebook post, which was made at a time when the profile was still public and those seeing the post would be able to verify its authenticity. This is old news to the Spanish speaking world, it seems. The information mentioned in the post is listed on the Anime News Network page for the Sailor Moon Eternal film. I am always cautious to share rumours or unproven claims without the proper context and so I’ve given all of the relevant context and I must say that in this case I’m convinced.

This is of course only relevant to the dub from Spain. What about the English dub? Last month we posted about an American voice actor who shared an image on Instagram which inadvertently showed that he was recording lines for Sailor Moon Eternal and the monitor he was working with had the word Netflix on it. This was following the information on the Screen Actors Guild web site telling us that “Astro Girl” was being dubbed by Netflix. With these strong pieces of evidence telling us that Netflix is doing the English and European Spanish dubs for Sailor Moon Eternal it seems likely that the same will be true for many other languages outside of Japan.

The question of whether or not the movies will be streamed on Netflix seems to have been answered, though we currently have no indication of when this will be. Now that Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1 is out in theatres in Japan a simultaneous release is impossible. The delay in releasing the films on streaming platforms outside of Japan may be an effort to encourage fans to attend screenings in movie theatres. We also don’t know if the movies will be streamed on Netflix in Japan along with the rest of the world. Some official information would be nice right about now!

With the Japanese theatrical release of the first Sailor Moon Eternal film coming tomorrow, on January 8th, we have gotten a poster and trailer for Sailor Moon Eternal Part 2 which will be released on February 11th! While most of the recent teasers we’ve been getting lately have included a mix of new and old footage this trailer is packed with new stuff we hadn’t seen before. The first half focuses on Sailor Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Saturn which suggests quite strongly that most of their part will be confined to this second film. Check out the trailer on YouTube which is embedded below.

There’s obviously a lot going on here and that story again seems to be closely following the events of the Sailor Moon manga, as the rest of Sailor Moon Crystal had and the first film also appears to be doing. We see super fast aging Hotaru becoming Sailor Saturn, Helios facing off against Nehelenia, the Amazoness Quartet, the Sailor Guardians in their princess dresses though only from the shoulders up, Chibi Moon kissing Helios back and a whole lot of very dramatic posing! I sure can’t wait to see both of these films!

The trailer briefly shows us Eternal Sailor Moon though the poster itself also features this form of Sailor Moon quite prominently along with the Eternal forms of all of the other Sailor Guardians, something which we never saw in the original Sailor Moon anime.

Based on everything we’ve seen it seems that Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1 will tell the story of the Sailor Moon manga’s Act 39 to 43, ending with Minako hanging from a ledge and staring at Artemis, a clip we’ve seen in a Part 1 trailer, while Part 2 will tell the story of Acts 44 to 49, starting with us catching up with Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna and Hotaru, which we see scenes from in this trailer. I wouldn’t be surprised to see minor changes to allow for Human Artemis to appear briefly at the end of Part 1 or perhaps to see a brief glimpse of Hotaru and her three parents as a post credits type scene. I guess we’ll know soon!

We still don’t know when these movies will be released outside of Japan! There has been strong evidence that they will be streamed on Netflix at some point, but no official announcement has been made.

What can we do but wait? Well you could get caught up with the series before the films are released by using the Amazon links below or streaming the episodes on Crunchyroll or Hulu in the US or on Tubi in Canada. Alternatively you can read the Dream Arc of the manga which these movies are based on. The Dream Arc is contained in volumes 7 and 8 which collect Acts 39 through 49.

An in depth look at the Sailor Moon Eternal magazine

The Sailor Moon Eternal magazine which we posted about last week was released on December 24th. Now that I’ve gotten my hands on a copy, and taken many photos of it, I’m prepared to share some thoughts on it. I’m very happy with this magazine! For the price this really is a great value. The magazine costs only 550 Japanese yen, a bit over $5 US, and includes 32 full colour pages with photos of Sailor Moon Eternal as well as other series from throughout the years. Don’t accept the photos I am sharing as substitutes for the real thing and pick a copy up for yourselves if you can. If you happen to live in Japan this is probably easy enough though international fans will find that the shipping cost for such an inexpensive item is significant, as was the case for me when I ordered my copy from Amazon Japan.

I’ll include photos of all pages of this magazine. These aren’t the best they could be as I don’t own a scanner anymore and because I’m in the middle of a move my camera is in a box somewhere. These were taken with my iPhone and edited to create smaller files. If anyone would like a close up photo of anything in this magazine let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

First off is the cover, which is quite beautiful. Note that this is the online exclusive cover featuring Sailor Saturn, Pluto, Uranus and Neptune with Chibi Moon on the back. There is also a cover which is sold in stores in Japan which features Sailor Moon on the cover and Sailor Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus on the back. I was surprised at just how big this was! This is much larger than a magazine and is probably more like a special edition newspaper. The paper quality isn’t the best and there is no binding. These are just loose sheets so the item came packaged in a sealed plastic bag. As indicated on the cover this magazine is released by Sponichi also known as Sport Nippon. Why is a daily sports magazine releasing a Sailor Moon magazine? Not sure!

Pages 2 and 3 feature a two page interview with Nanao, a Japanese actress and model who will be providing the voice of Nehelenia in the films.

Next is a two page interview with Japanese comedian Naomi Watanabe who will be providing the voice of Zirconia.

The following two pages include bios for all of the Sailor Guardians as well as Tuxedo Mask and Helios. The ordering of these, as well as some other elements in this magazine, strikes me as a bit odd. Anyone who reads manga will realize that Japanese is written “backwards” as compared to what is seen in the west where panels will be read from right to left and top to bottom. These bios however are sorted from left to right starting with Sailor Moon in the top left and ending with lowly Helios in the bottom right. All the while the Sailor Mercury transformation sequence at the top of the pages goes from right to left.

Page 8 shows us the Dead Moon Circus with Nehelenia, Zirconia, the Amazon Trio and the Amazoness Quartet. Page 9 has Chibiusa and Pegasus with an overview of the film’s story.

Page 10 is an interview with Kotono Mitsuishi, the voice of Sailor Moon, and it also includes a few images from the film, most of which we’ve seen in better quality at this point. Page 11 has information about Momoiro Clover Z and Moon Color Chainon, the theme for the film. It also includes some other staff information.

Pages 12 and 13 are layed out like newspaper clippings telling the story of Usagi and Mamoru’s “Miracle Romance”. This features images from earlier in the Sailor Moon Crystal series.

Page 14 is an ad for the Sailor Moon Cafe. Page 15 is half of a fold out which I’ll explain below.

This Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon’s History fold out is the back side of the centerfold which is actually pages 15 and 18. This shows a timeline of the various incarnations of Sailor Moon spanning manga, anime and musicals. Even the often forgotten live action series gets a mention! The final piece in the history is a poster for the Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show which we hope to see soon!

The centerfold for the magazine is a two page spread of the Small Worlds Tokyo exhibit which included a mini version of Tokyo as seen in Sailor Moon. This features some side by side photos of real locations in Tokyo compared to scenes from Sailor Moon Eternal!

Page 18 is the other half of the Sailor Moon’s History fold out and Page 19 has an ad for VR Dream Flight which is an event I haven’t posted about but probably should have. This is a Virtual Reality experience which lets fans fly around Tokyo with Pegasus, Chibiusa and Sailor Moon.

Pages 20 and 21 show us every single manga cover released in Japan! This includes four full releases and the first two covers of the new colour versions.

Page 22 is an ad for the Moon Color Chainon CD/Blu-ray releases which are coming on January 13th. These are still not in stock on Amazon Japan so I’m hoping that gets resolved in the next couple of weeks. Page 23 is a weird thing which I can’t quite figure out. It seems to be a fake group chat between various Sailor Moon characters though I’m not sure who’s who or what’s going on.

Page 24 is an ad for a Sky Garden Sailor Moon Eternal event which will include a screening of the film, a shop, a cafe and the VR event. Page 25 has a quiz where there are four choices each. Again the order of these question is a bit odd, reading left to right. Some of these are very easy but I’m frankly stumped by question 7 which asks which character is Phobos. Perhaps it will be obvious what colour Phobos and Deimos are in the film but as it currently stands there is only conflicting evidence of this from manga art book sources.

Pages 26 and 27 are ads for the Konica Minolta Planetarium where fans will be able to take their photo with a Sailor Moon poster, buy Sailor Moon themed drinks at the cafe as well as other merchandise.

Pages 28 and 29 show tons of Sailor Moon merchandise which is available for sale from various retailers.

Page 30 has a colour page based on the Nehelenia poster. I’m not sure the paper can be drawn on terribly well but I’m not about to let my children loose on this thing to test that theory out! Page 31 is an ad for 3coins which is a store which is selling a number of fairly inexpensive Sailor Moon products.

Finally the back cover of the magazine shows Super Sailor Chibi Moon!

All in all I really think this is a great magazine. It’s full of ads, yes, but they’re all Sailor Moon ads. For the low price point this is a fun collectible for fans to check out. Below I’ve included a few more close up images of some things in this magazine.

Spoiler! This is Artemis in human form! There was a leak of this image earlier but here is a higher quality version.

Which is Phobos and which is Deimos? Wikimoon mentions that there has been inconsistent evidence of which character is what colour. The two are only ever shown in black and white in the manga so there’s no conclusive evidence there. They are in some of the Sailor Moon art books however in volume IV Phobos is purple and Deimos is red (PIPDIR) while in volume V Phobos is red and Deimos is purple (PIRDIP). Hopefully the film will clear this up once and for all, but will this really settle things conclusively? This reminds me of the controversy in the Transformers fan community where there is a never ending conflict between the cartoon purist FIRRIB camp (Frenzy is red, Rumble is blue) and the toy collecting FIBRIR camp (Frenzy is blue, Rumble is red).

Here’s a roundtable discussion with the voices of the Amazon Trio from the Sailor Moon Eternal filims

Last week there was a roundtable with the voices of the Amazoness Quartet and this week, on December 27th, a similar live event took place on Cinema Today YouTube channel featuring the voices of the Amazon Trio! This 23 minute event included never previously seen images of the Amazon Trio, though we had previously seen some of the images from this clip during the Amazoness Quartet roundtable. You can watch the clip on YouTube which is embedded below.

The event features Shota Aoi, the voice of Fish Eye, Satoshi Hino, the voice of Tiger’s Eye, and Toshiyuki Toyonaga, the voice of Hawk’s Eye. For convenience the subtitles are the colour of each character’s hair!

As I don’t speak Japanese I can’t give much context to anything discussed here but it is always fun to see what the voice actors behind a character look like beyond a simple headshot! Which one of the Amazon Trio is your favourite?

Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1 will be released in theatres in Japan on January 8th 2021 with Part 2 coming shortly afterwards on February 11th. Though there is some justified speculation about the movies coming to Netflix at some point this has not yet been officially confirmed.

The latest Sailor Moon Eternal footage is all about Chibiusa

A new Sailor Moon Eternal clip has been added to the Toei Movies YouTube channel. This clip mainly focuses on Chibiusa with a bit of Sailor Moon, Helios and Pegasus. In it we see Chibiusa looking up to Usagi and her getting kissed by Helios. You can watch the footage embedded below.

What do you think of the clip? There sure is a lot of eye detail in this film! We’re getting quite close to the January 8th Japanese premiere of Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1. Part 2 will be in Japanese theatres on February 11th. While it seems likely the movies will be coming to Netflix at some time this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Here are more stills from the upcoming Sailor Moon Eternal films including human Artemis, Phobos and Deimos

A few more images from the upcoming Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1 film have made their way online. I stumbled upon a lot of these on social media and don’t have a source on all of them. A few are from Cinemacafe.net and some are scans from the Sailor Moon Eternal magazine which was released today.

The significant things here are age swapped Usagi and Chibiusa, a major plot point of the first film, as well as the human version of Artemis, who is usually a cat, as well as Phobos and Deimos, who until now have been crows. There is conflicting evidence in coloured manga images on which one of Phobos and Deimos is red and which is purple, so it’s not clear which is which in these images. I hope we are able to settle this in the film!

Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1 will hit Japanese theatres soon, on January 8th! Part 2 will be out on February 11th. We still don’t have any official confirmation of a release outside of Japan but it seems likely the films will be streamed on Netflix in the future.

A new Sailor Moon Eternal clip focuses on Sailor Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus

A new Sailor Moon Eternal clip has been released and it includes a mix of new footage and some we’ve seen before leaving me wondering “Have I seen that specific pose before or is it just superficially similar we saw a few weeks ago? Was that from an HD clip or a postage stamp sized image with SAMPLE stamped across it?”. This clip focuses on Ami, Rei, Makoto and Minako. We see some new footage of them in civilian and Sailor Guardian form and some attacks. You can watch the clip embedded below.

Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1 hits theatres in Japan on January 8th and Part 2 will follow on February 11th. There has not been any official news about a release outside of Japan though the speculation is that it will be streaming on Netflix at some point in the future.

A Sailor Moon Eternal magazine is being released in Japan on December 24th

A Sailor Moon Eternal magazine is coming out in Japan tomorrow which is actually soon because tomorrow in Japan is actually a bit later today! This 32 page full colour magazine will be sold in stores in Japan and online. The catch? There’s a different cover for the in store version and the online version! The magazine is fairly inexpensive, costing only 550 yen which is a bit over $5 US however ordering it online and shipping it outside of Japan will likely cost significantly more than that in shipping! I went ahead and ordered two copies from Amazon Japan because I was a bit annoyed at the prospect of spending almost three times more on shipping than on the cost of the item itself!

The in store cover features Super Sailor Moon on the front and Super Sailor Venus, Jupiter, Mercury and Mars on the back. The online exclusive cover features Super Sailor Saturn, Pluto, Uranus and Neptune on the front and Super Sailor Chibi Moon on the back.

We can see from the index what is included. I can’t really read any of that, but here’s a decent estimate at what it says.
