An English translation for Sailor Moon S for Sega Game Gear is now available

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon S for Sega Game Gear

Great news for Sailor Moon fans who also appreciate classic video games! The 1995 Sailor Moon S video game for the Sega Game Gear has been translated into English! This seems like a somewhat odd choice of a game to translate as it’s not an RPG or something with a bunch of text, but a fairly simple side scroller. Still the translation is a useful one as it adds English to the title screen, multiple menus and even subtitles to some spoken cut scenes. This is not an official translation of a 24 year old game but rather a fan translation.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon S for Sega Game Gear - Title screen - English

Does this mean you’ll need to dust off your Sega Game Gear to play this? Not likely. The translation file supplied is in the form of a patch, an ips, which can be applied to a rom dump of the original game in order to make the English version. Fans would likely play this on some sort of video game emulator. Which you would want to use depends on what platform you like to play it on. Details and a download link are included on the Romhacking.net web site. This file alone will not allow you to play the game. You will need the original rom, the patch and software to patch it as well as an emulator. For legal purposes the original rom file, which is copyright, is not hosted on the site. The file name mentioned is “Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S (Japan).gg”. I had an old file named “Sailor Moon S(jp).gg” and was able to patch it. I’ve also seen it called “Sailor Moon S (J).gg” on a site which hosted the rom. You’ll need software to patch the file. It’s not terribly complicated, but depending on your operating system it might require a bit of work. Since I use a Mac I needed to dig a little to find platform independent software to patch the game. I ultimately used a Pearl application ips.pl which can run in a Unix terminal but there are probably easier ways to do this on Windows.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon S for Sega Game Gear - Sailor Moon

I personally enjoy video game emulation on my Raspberry Pi equipped with RetroPie as well as a hacked 3DS I use for portable classic gaming. I tried out this game on my Raspberry Pi. It seemed to play well although I had trouble with the Rei’s Fortune Teller mini game. It just booted back to the menu instead of giving me my fortune. Speaking of that mini game! The game suffers from the Y2K bug as it is unable to take a date beyond 1999 for today’s date. This game is so old that it doesn’t even work right if played almost 20 years ago!

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon S for Sega Game Gear - Rei's Fortune Teller - English

I originally played this game years ago as I bought the Game Gear game and a second hand Game Gear for the express purpose of playing it. The Game Gear has no restriction on playing international games. Since there’s very little Japanese text outside of the menus it was easy enough to play. As Sailor Moon games go this isn’t really the best. It’s a side scrolling sort of platformer sort of beat ‘em up game but there are much better Sailor Moon games of this type on the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo in North America). Most fans would probably tell you that the Sailor Moon Another Story RPG is the most worthwhile of the many Sailor Moon video games released on a number of systems throughout the 1990s. I certainly have enjoyed many hours with the game, though I find it has a very inconsistent difficulty curve. That game is also available in English along with the Sailor Moon R Super Famicom game. The Sailor Moon S and SuperS fighting games are also pretty fun and easy games to pick up.

A Sailor Moon Crystal S. H. Figuarts figure is coming in January

Sailor Moon Crystal S. H. Figuarts

A new Sailor Moon Crystal S. H. Figuarts figure has been posted to the Tamashii Nations official site. This is Sailor Moon, once again, but this time it is a Sailor Moon Crystal version of Sailor Moon. We had previously gotten some Figuarts Zero statues in Sailor Moon Crystal versions but this is the first Sailor Moon Crystal S. H. Figuarts figure. S. H. Figuarts figures are high quality very posable figures with many extra faces and hands so that you can make them do pretty much anything you can imagine.

Sailor Moon Crystal S. H. Figuarts

This version of Sailor Moon has the Cosmic Heart Compact on her chest, from the Infinity Arc. Will more of the Sailor Guardians be released next? An S. H. Figuarts Sailor Moon Crystal Sailor Mercury would be the obvious next release. Who would you most like to see in this style of figure?

The figure will be released this January. No price has been announced yet but they usually sell for about $50 when first released domestically.

Premium Bandai exclusives for Sailor V and Black Lady Pullip Dolls are Artemis and Luna P

Luna P included with Black Lady's Pullip Doll

The Bandai exclusives for the Sailor V and Black Lady Pullip Dolls have been revealed! Sailor V will come with Artemis and Black Lady will come with Evil Luna P, which is just like Luna P only with a symbol of the Black Moon Clan on her forehead instead of a Crescent Moon. Bandai exclusives for Pullip Dolls are usually alternate costumes. In the case of most Sailor Guardians, this meant a civilian form school uniform. As Sailor Venus already came with Minako’s school uniform it makes sense that it not be included with this release. Black Lady couldn’t very well have had a school uniform since she never goes to school!

Artemis included with Sailor V's Pullip Doll

We had previously announced these two Pullip Dolls, high quality very expensive dolls with huge heads and eyes. Sailor V will be available later this month and Black Lady will be available in January. To get the Bandai exclusives the dolls must be preordered from the Premium Bandai site (Sailor V, Black Lady) for the price of 18,000 yen (about $150 US).

More images of the dolls were released along with this news. The above image shows Sailor V along with Artemis for scale.

The Black Lady Pullip doll was revealed on the official Sailor Moon site. The doll will be coming this December and will cost 18,000 yen, about $150 US. Pullip Dolls are high quality creepy looking ultra expensive dolls with huge eyes and heads. They usually cost around $150 to $180 US when released in North America.

Black Lady S. H. Figuarts figure with Wise Man Figure at Tamashii Nation 2015 Event

This weekend at the Tamashii Nation 2015 Event a Black Lady S. H. Figuarts figure was also revealed. Not a lot of detail is known about this figure. At the event a Wise Man figure can be seen behind it but there was not label for this. It is not posable so it is not part of the S. H. Figuarts line and it seems too small to be part of the Figuarts Zero line. Is this to be included with the Black Lady figure? If it is this is much bigger than anything else which accompanied any other S. H. Figuarts toys. We’ll have more details on this as we learn them, assuming this will be for sale and not just a prop for the display.

Sailor Moon S. H. Figuarts Figures at Tamashii Nation 2015 Event

Also revealed at this event was one of the most uninteresting S. H. Figuarts figures to date. A Sailor Moon R version of Sailor Moon! How completely similar to the version we’ve already gotten! She has a Cutie Moon Rod and slightly different Brooch. S. H. Figuarts dolls are very details and posable figures with swappable parts. They usually cost about $50 when released in North America.

A Sailor Saturn Dal doll and Sailor Pluto Pullip doll are coming soon

Sailor Saturn DAL doll

A Sailor Saturn Dal doll has just been announced on the Sailor Moon official site. Additionally a Sailor Pluto Pullip doll was announced last month.

Sailor Pluto Pullip doll

Sailor Saturn is not a Pullip doll. She is a Dal doll. What’s the difference? Pullip is the name of a specific character and most of the Sailor Moon dolls are Pullip dolls because they roughly match that character’s size. The Sailor Moon Pullip doll is a Sailor Moon doll made like the Pullip doll, the first in the series. Tuxedo Mask does not have a Pullip doll but a Taeyang doll, Pullip’s boyfriend, because he is male. It’s like if Sailor Moon was a Barbie doll and he was a Ken doll. Similarly Sailor Chibi Moon, like Sailor Saturn, gets a Dal doll. Dal is Pullip’s younger sister. Pullip is 17 while her sister Dal is 13. Since the doll is younger looking her model fits better for younger characters. You’ll notice that this doll is a bit smaller and has a different shaped face as compared to Pullip. All this said Pullip dolls, Taeyang dolls and Dal dolls are all part of the same line of products made by the same company, they are simply made using different base designs for the doll. Sailor Saturn’s doll will be released in October 2015 and will sell for 17000 yen, roughly $143 US.

Sailor Pluto Pullip doll

Sailor Pluto finally got a doll. How great! She has been last in so many products but even though coming after Human Luna she was not the last Sailor Guardian to have a Pullip doll announced. We have also gotten a look at Sailor Pluto’s Bandai Exclusive which is a civilian outfit which allows her to be Setsuna Meiou, Sailor Pluto’s civilian identity. Unlike the other Sailor Guardians Sailor Pluto does not have a school uniform (and is not based on a real planet) so she doesn’t have that as her Bandai Exclusive outfit like the others do. She has a purple business suit so that she can be all professional and stuff. Her doll will be released some time in September for 17,000 yen, roughly $143 US, with her Bandai Exclusive version selling for 20,000 yen, about $168 US.

Setsuna Meio Pullip doll

The Sailor Saturn doll will be unveiled on Sunday September 6th at some sort of Spring Doll Show which you can read about at the show’s web site if you happen to be able to read Japanese, which I assume anyone who’s able to attend should be able to do. Due to time zones it’s actually tomorrow in Japan right now. The show should be starting in a few hours.

A Super Sailor Mercury S. H. Figuarts figure has been revealed

Super Sailor Mercury and Super Sailor Moon S. H. Figuarts

This past weekend, on July 26th, the Super Sailor Mercury S. H. Figuarts figure was revealed at the Wonder Festival 2015 Summer in Chiba, Japan. This was also announced on the official Sailor Moon site. Super Sailor Mercury does not differ greatly from regular Sailor Mercury. The differences are the little semi transparent flaps on her shoulders, a heart shaped gem in the middle of her bow to replace the round one, a star on her choker, a larger bow on the back of her skirt and three ear rings per ear instead of one.

Previously Super Sailor Moon had been announced but this is the first of the other Sailor Guardians to be revealed in their powered up forms. One would expect that, following this figure’s release, the rest of the Sailor Guardians will also be released in Super forms. If the original release schedule is any indication we will next be getting Super Sailor Mars followed by Super Sailor Venus, then Super Sailor Jupiter. While it would certainly preferable to get more unique characters at this point instead of slightly different releases of existing characters, this certainly makes some sense from a business point of view. It’s a lot easier from a manufacturing and design aspect to make a new Super Sailor Guardian body mold and use mostly unchanged head and face molds from existing figures than to make entirely new figures that do not resemble any others.

There is currently no release date for Super Sailor Mercury though we can expect that this figure will be priced similarly to already released figures. You can buy some of these figures from Amazon using the links below.

Sailor Stars Petit Chara figures coming in September

Eternal Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi Chibi and Sailor Starlights Petit Chara figures

The latest Petit Chara figures have been announced on the Sailor Moon official site and this Sailor Stars set will include Eternal Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi Chibi and the Sailor Starlights. This set will be released in late September. You can pre-order them from Premium Bandai.

Sailor Star Maker, Sailor Star Fighter and Sailor Star Healer Petit Chara figures

Petit Chara figures are non poseable super deformed figures. This season of Sailor Moon was never released in North America, though many fans are likely still familiar with the story through fan subs and the manga. Eternal Sailor Moon is simply the powered up form of Sailor Moon for this season. Sailor Chibi Chibi is a mysterious girl of unknown origin, whos actual identity varies depending on what continuity we’re talking about. The Sailor Starlights are Sailor Star Fighter, Sailor Star Maker and Sailor Star Healer, Sailor Guardians from another solar system who traveled to Earth in search of their princess.

Super Sailor Moon, Sailor V, Sailor Pluto and Zoisite dressed as Sailor Moon S. H. Figuarts figures revealed

S. H. Figuarts Super Sailor Moon

There have been a lot of new S. H. Figuarts figures revealed since I last posted about them. A Super Sailor Moon S. H. Figuarts figure has been officially announced. It was originally revealed at the Wonder Festival 2015 Winter along with many other figures! Also revealed at this convention were the long awaited Sailor Pluto, Sailor V and Zoisite dressed as Sailor Moon S. H. Figuarts. In total this makes 4 different Sailor Moon S. H. Figuarts figures, 3 of which are mostly just different colours. This is likely the case because it’s much easier to reuse existing molds and change the colours of a figure than to make new molds and a completely new figure. A Sailor Chibi Moon figure had already been revealed which we posted about last year. All figures will cost about $40 to $50 once released in North America.

Sailor Pluto S. H. Figuarts

Super Sailor Moon has a few cool accessories with the Kaleidomoon Scope, her attack item from Sailor Moon S, as well as the Holy Grail which she originally uses to transform in to Super Sailor Moon.

Sailor V S. H. Figuarts

Sailor V looks great. No accessories are shown to be included though this doesn’t mean she won’t have any. The Sailor Venus figure came with a Sailor V mask but this is a drastically different costume. Zoisite dressed as Sailor Moon is from anime episode 33 in which Zoisite posed as Sailor Moon in order to lure in Tuxedo Mask. His colours are slightly different than Sailor Moon’s with a darker costume and green eyes. No accessories are shown here either, though Zoisite stabs Tuxedo Mask while in that costume in the anime. That might be something nice to include.

Sailor Chibi Moon is only in her original form, not her Super Sailor Chibi Moon form. She comes with her Cutie Moon Rod.

Sailor Jupiter Pullip doll announced

Sailor Jupiter Pullip Doll

The Sailor Jupiter Pullip doll has been revealed on the Sailor Moon official site. The doll follows Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus and Princess Serenity which have already been released. Why do we keep getting Sailor Venus products before Sailor Jupiter products despite Sailor Jupiter being the first to appear in the manga and anime? Not sure. Maybe it has something to do with Sailor V or character popularity.

Pullip dolls are high quality oddly proportioned dolls with large heads and eyes. This one will retail for 16,000 yen, about $135 US. It’s expected to sell for the same amount as the dolls which have already been released. The Bandai Premium exclusive version will be more expensive and, based on the other releases, will likely come with Makoto’s school uniform. We’ll share photos of that exclusive once they are revealed.

Sailor Mars Pullip Doll announced

Sailor Mars Pullip Doll

The latest Sailor Moon Pullip doll has been announced. Next in this line of dolls is Sailor Mars! Previously released were Sailor Moon, Mercury and Venus and Princess Serenity. Sailor Mercury and Venus both included civilian school uniforms as their Bandai exclusive bonus. No specifics have been announced about Sailor Mars but it would make sense that she would also come with a school uniform when ordered from Premium Bandai. Sailor Moon came with Luna but as Sailor Venus did not come with Artemis it seems unlikely that Phobos and Deimos will be included as exclusive bonuses.

Pullip dolls are high quality very expensive dolls with disproportionally large heads and eyes. Though there is no specific release date or price noted at this time, it can be expected to sell for $150 for the regular version and $180 for the Premium Bandai exclusive version.
