The new release of the Sailor moon manga is finally out in Japan and with that we can get a better look at a lot of the differences with this edition. This Kanzenban or “Complete Edition” is larger than any previous release and is hard cover.
Left to right the original release, the 2003 reprint and the 2013 edition
The actual art inside is updated like the version released in Japan 10 years and ago, which had the same art as the version which was recently released in North America by Kodansha.
Today, November 30th only, TeeFury is selling this Girl Scouts inspired Sailor Scouts shirt for just $11. The name makes reference to the fact that the Sailor Guardians are referred to as Sailor Scouts in the English dub of Sailor Moon. This design is very similar to the Girl Scouts logo.
Recently the Boy Scouts of America has threatened to sue a group called the Hacker Scouts for use of the name Scouts. This has led some to wonder if they might make a similar legal threat against the new Sailor Moon anime should they continue to use the term Scouts for the new series. This existing controversy may cause the translators to avoid the term and opt for Sailor Guardians instead, though this decision may be made independent of any impending legal threats. Thanks to Andrew from our Facebook page for bringing the Scouts article to our attention.
The final English translated Sailor Moon manga by Kodansha was released yesterday. Sailor Moon Short Stories vol. 2 collects the last few stories that hadn’t been seen before. You can pick this up at your local bookstore or online retailer (including the Amazon link at the bottom of this post).
The bulk of this manga is Princess Kaguya’s Lover. This story was originally published as volume 10 of 18 in the original manga series, taking place immediately after the battle with Professor Tomoe and Mistress 9. It is the story of Luna falling in love with a human and becoming a human herself, and it was animated as the Sailor Moon S movie.
A few weeks ago at the Sailor Moon voice actor panel at Unplugged Expo Jill Frappier, known to Sailor Moon fans as the voice of Luna, mentioned that she had been doing some pottery. For fans who are interested in picking up some of her works you can check out some of her upcoming shows. There is a show this weekend, Saturday November 23rd from 8am to 4pm, at the Performing Arts Lodge in Toronto. There will also be a show December 7th and 8th from 12pm to 6pm at the Tranzac Club in Toronto.
This Sailor Nite shirt featuring silhouettes of Sailor Moon and her friends will be for sale for $12 from now until Sunday November 24th at 2pm EST at Pop Up Tee. The shirt features Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus in front of the Moon. Sailor Moon has her Kaleidomoon Scope weapon which she receives from Pegasus in Sailor Moon SuperS and the length of the ribbons on the back of the Sailor Fukus are consistent with the outfits that the Sailor Guardians don in the later half of the SuperS season.
I’m unable to read that Japanese writing due to it being low rez and my not actually reading Japanese.
This week’s newest episode of South Park, “A Song of Ass and Fire”, featured a great Sailor Moon reference as Sony’s President gives Kenny Sailor Moon’s Crisis Moon Compact, the item which she uses to transform into Super Sailor Moon in the Sailor Moon SuperS season of the anime. The President of Sony gives Kenny this item so that he can become an official Princess. He then becomes Princess Kenny who has anime eyes and can shoot rainbows from his hands. While the item isn’t exactly identical to the Crisis Moon Compact and has some qualities resembling some of her other transformation items it seems to most closely resemble this with it’s wings, crown and heart shaped crystal.
Today, November 18th, this Sailor Mars “Spirit of Fire” shirt will be available from Ript Apparel for $10. The shirt is done in an Art Nouveau style, as have many others in this series. The “Esprit du Feu” on the shirt are French for “Spirit of Fire”.
Here’s the second of two Sailor Moon voice actor panels that were part of Unplugged Expo‘s Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary celebration. This panel was from the Sunday, October 27th, in Toronto. Saturday’s panel had more voice actors present but Sunday’s panel allowed for a more intimate experience with Ron Rubin, the voice of Artemis, Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter, Terri Hawkes, the voice of Sailor Moon and Toby Proctor, the voice of Tuxedo Mask. The MC is me, Adam Gardner.
The panel focused on the cast’s time working in voice acting and featured a few attacks from the live action series. Though discussion of the new Sailor Moon anime was saved for the Sunday panel there were no new announcements made as no new information was available however the cast is enthusiastic to reprise their roles if given the chance and suggested fans on the Internet would have a lot of influence if they asked to see the original cast return. One such effort which I mentioned during the panel was this Facebook page which petitions to have Terri Hawkes voice Sailor Moon in the new anime. Please support this page and others if you’d like to hear your favourite voice actors in the new show.
Thanks to the Unplugged Expo staff for putting this convention together, to the Sailor Moon voice actors for making a great panel and to Kate for helping with the camera. Check out Kate’s Sailor Moon screenshots on Instagram or Twitter.
Well over a year into the 20th anniversary celebration a new Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary tribute album has been announced. This album will be released on January 29th 2014 for a price of 3000 yen, roughly $30 US. The album will have a total of 10 tracks with three of the artists already announced. The date of January coincides with the latest news of when the new Anime wil be released, though this date may be coincidental. Momoiro Clover Z, who will be performing the theme song for the upcoming new Sailor Moon anime, will be doing a track. It’s unclear at this point if the track on the CD will be the new theme song or not. As Momoiro Clover Z have performed Moonlight Densetsu, the original Sailor Moon anime theme song, in concert a number of times already it’s also a possibility that this cover will be their track on the CD. The two other artists which have been named to date are Mitsuko Horie and Shoko Nakagawa.
