Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 148 and 149 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 148 - Usagi offers Fish Eye an umbrella

This week on Hulu‘s new episodes of Sailor Moon SuperS we get my favourite episodes of the season. Many consider Sailor Moon SuperS to be fairly weak as Sailor Moon seasons go, with a heavy focus on Chibiusa and episodes which don’t contribute much to the overall story. Episodes 148 and 149 are an exception to this. If you’ve for whatever reason skipped all of Sailor Moon SuperS up to now you can safely just start watching here and not miss much. Let me catch you up! There’s a horse named Pegasus that has been talking with Chibiusa which the bad guys are looking for. The girls now have little things on their shoulders which don’t do anything. These three gloriously dressed guys are pick up artists and villains. Okay you’re all caught up.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 148 - Fish Eye kissing Mamoru

Episode 148, Shadow of Evil: the Trio’s Last Chance, is the first in a sort of two parter. In this episode Fish Eye targets Mamoru but things don’t quite go as they have in other episodes. The usual formula has one of the Amazon Trio target someone and then, without any real emotional connection, try to pick them up an then take a peak at their Mirror of Dreams. Fish Eye, like Neil Strauss when he met Lisa Leveridge, has actual feelings for Mamoru and this sets him on a path of self realization. When he really makes a go at Mamoru he is rejected and Mamoru gives as a reason that he doesn’t have any dream. Fish Eye then realizes that while they’ve been looking for Pegasus in all of these people’s dreams, they didn’t have any of their own! He attempts to summon a Mirror of Dreams from Tiger’s Eye and then sees what he feared, that they don’t actually have any! Fish Eye is upset and has a peak at Mamoru’s Mirror of Dreams, which leads Sailor Moon to show up and save the day. Defeated emotionally, he sits crying on a bench and Usagi comes to his side to help him out, showing Sailor Moon’s true strength.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 149 - Usagi without a mirror of dreams

Episode 149, Mirrors of Dreams: the Amazon’s Last Stage, is the last we’ll see of the Amazon Trio. Fish Eye is heartbroken from Mamoru’s rejection, but Usagi is being compassionate towards him. While the Usagi we usually see in the series, even in the last episode, is one of extreme jealousy, here she presents a very different side. She has pity for Fish Eye who she knows doesn’t have a chance with Mamoru. While having this really awkward sleepover type situation with Usagi, he overhears Chibiusa talking with Pegasus and realizes that he has been hiding in her dreams all along. Hawk’s Eye targets Usagi and there is just no dressing up this episode’s attempted seduction. He walks in and just snaps his fingers to make her mirror appear. Does he not try for anyone under the age of majority? This makes us wonder why these guys have even bothered with the whole romance charade for the past 20 episodes. It’s obvious that it’s completely unnecessary! In the ensuing battle Usagi’s Mirror of Dreams is destroyed, which is sort of like having her soul destroyed, and then Hawk’s Eye is killed. Fish Eye and Tiger’s Eye finally have a change of heart and know that they need to save Usagi and Chibiusa, who Fish Eye kidnapped, to stop the monster and get their revenge. And they do, sacrificing their own lives in the process. Next it is revealed what the Amazon Trio really are. Hawk’s Eye is a hawk, Tiger’s Eye is a tiger and Fish Eye is a fish. A Mirror of Dreams is like a soul and these three don’t appear to have any. The insinuation would be that animals don’t actually have souls. Bad news for Luna, Artemis and Diana! Surely they could be exempt from this but what of other animals in the series such as Rhett Butler or the Chanelas? They must not have souls either.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 149 - Hawk's Eye the Hawk, Tiger's Eye the Tiger, Fish Eye the Fish

The Amazon Trio have truly redeemed themselves in their final moments. This is like the story of Pinocchio trying to become a real boy. Pegasus rewards them by giving them Dream Mirrors of their own, and then takes them with him to Elysion. Are they actually alive at this point or do they simply have their souls brought into the afterlife? Regardless of the details they are not seen again, but it seems that they are finally at peace.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 149 - The Amazon Trio with Mirrors of Dreams

Throughout both of these episodes we see a shadowy outline of the Amazoness Quartet. We will be seeing them more in the next half of the season as they are the villains to replace the Amazon Trio.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 148 - The Amazoness Quartet

I was such a fan of these episodes that I managed to pick up a couple of cels from episode 148. Have a look at those below.

Sailor Moon Crystal’s English dub is coming to Hulu in November and Blu-Ray in 2016 plus the English voices for the Witches 5 have been announced

Sailor Moon Crystal English dub coming in November

This past weekend Viz Media held their Sailor Moon Panel at New York Comic Con. We got a lot of news about Sailor Moon Crystal. First and most importantly, the dub of Sailor Moon Crystal will be coming to Hulu and Viz.com next month, some time in November. We previously learned that the dub cast would be the same cast which was used for Viz’s new dub of the original Sailor Moon anime.

Sailor Moon Crystal English Blu-Ray 2016

We have also learned, via a flyer of their upcoming releases, that Sailor Moon Crystal would be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in 2016. The first release is “Sailor Moon Crystal Set 1: The Dark Kingdom Arc” and will include Sailor Moon Crystal Acts 1 to 13. This Blu-Ray set will no doubt include the original Japanese and English dubbed versions of Sailor Moon Crystal, including optional subtitles. We’ve previously learned that Viz’s version of Sailor Moon Crystal will be the updated version used for the Japanese Blu-Ray releases, which had minor changes to the animation from the original streaming version.

Viz English dub of Sailor Moon voice cast for the Witches 5

In casting news we have also learned the voice actors who will be playing the Witches 5, who are 6 of the new villains from the upcoming dub of Sailor Moon S. Now that the Infinity story arc of Sailor Moon Crystal has been announced in Japan, it stands to reason that this same cast will be around to voice these characters once those episodes are dubbed into English. The new cast includes some returning actors who have done other voices in the series. Erin Fitzgerald will voice Eudial. Kira Buckland will voice Mimete. Laura Post, who previously voiced a kindergarden teacher in Sailor Moon R episode 52 and the monster Amaderasu in episode 53, will voice Tellu. Cricket Brown, who previously voiced Usagi’s teacher Haruna, will play Viluy. Johanna Luis, who previously voiced An the Alien also known as Natsumi in Sailor Moon R, will play both Cyprine and Ptilol who somehow count as one of the Witches 5.

Keiko Kitagawa, Sailor Mars from the live action series, is getting married

Keiko Kitagawa as Sailor Mars

Keiko Kitagawa, best known to fans of the live action Sailor Moon series as Sailor Mars, is getting married. This was reported Thursday by the Japanese newspaper Sports Hochi. She is engaged to DAIGO, a singer from the band BREAKERZ who has performed theme songs for anime series such as Detective Conan. The wedding is set to take place in January.

Keiko Kitagawa and Daigo

Keiko Kitagawa has had a great career since appearing in the live action Sailor Moon series in 2003 and 2004. She has done a lot of modeling work and has appeared in a number of Japanese drama series and movies, including the live action adaptation of Paradise Kiss. North American fans may have seen her in Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift. The scene below shows her swearing in a deleted scene from the film.

Fans may be asking themselves, as I have, why this guy and not me? Surely I was expecting that despite considerable differences in geography, culture, spoken language, income, social status, age and attractiveness that the two of us were perfectly suited for each other, but alas this does not seem to be the case.

There is currently no news about whether or not her cat Jill will be involved in the ceremony.

A Sailor V Pullip Doll is coming in November

Sailor V Pullip Doll

A new Sailor V Pullip doll was announced this week on the Official Sailor Moon Site. This doll is coming in November. Though the price has not yet been revealed it will likely be the same as other dolls that have been released, which end up costing about $150 to $180 US. A Sailor Venus Doll was released a while back, but this new design is of Sailor V, Minako’s alternate identify from before she became Sailor Venus.

Codename: Sailor V - Complete Edition Manga - Covers

The Codename: Sailor V comic predates the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon comic by a few months. In this story, which takes place chronologically before the events of Sailor Moon, Artemis gives Minako the power to transform into Sailor V and fight the Dark Agency herself. This character later appeared in the Sailor Moon comic, anime and live action series, where she ultimately becomes Sailor Venus.

Ayaka Komatsu as Sailor V from the live action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon series

Many Pullip dolls have Bandai exclusive alternate costumes. In the case of Sailor Venus we already have a Minako’s school uniform released so it remains to be seen what, if any, alternate costume may be in store for Sailor V.

Pullip dolls are detailed and very expensive somewhat creepy looking dolls with irregularly large eyes and heads. Sailor V joins a long list of other Pullip dolls which have already been released. Support the site by ordering some of them using the links below.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 12 Review

Sailor Moon Crystal Blu-Ray Vol. 12 - Cover

The last volume of Sailor Moon Crystal was released on Blu-Ray last month, on September 9th. I’ve dragged my feet on this review so much that the next disk, volume 13, is released today in Japan. Volume 12 can be purchased from sites such as Amazon Japan for 5194 yen, about $43 US. The next and final volume can also be ordered from Amazon Japan for 5994 yen, about $50 US. As always this release contains only two episodes, in this case Act 23 and 24, in Japanese only and the cover art included is of Black Lady, Chibiusa’s older and eviler self.

Sailor Moon Crystal Blu-Ray Vol. 12 - Contents

The charm included with this release is Sailor Moon’s Crystal Star, her transformation broach for this story arc.

Sailor Moon Crystal Blu-Ray Vol. 12 - Crystal Star Charm

Two episodes are included on this disk. Act 23 – Covert Maneuvers – Wiseman, and Act 24 – Attack – Black Lady. The video quality as always is great. As with other DVD and Blu-Ray releases some minor changes to the animation have taken place since the streaming version. Nothing of significance is included with these particular episodes. Nothing changes any of the scenes in any major way. The biggest change with Act 24 is the colour and brightness for certain scenes. As always you can check out Crystal Comparisons for screenshots which show the changes for any particular episode, including Acts 23 and 24.

Sailor Moon Crystal Blu-Ray Vol. 12 - Special booklet - Pages 14 and 15 - Character designs

A 20 page full colour booklet is included once again. Unfortunately I am unable to identify the subjects of the first interview. The names are Nozomi Matsuura and Yukiko Kariya. This web site indicates that they work for Bandai, but no other details are given. The second interview is with the voice actors playing the Black Moon Clan. This includes Mamoru Miyano, the voice of Prince Demande, Hiroki Takahashi, the voice of Rubeus, Tsubasa Yonaga, the voice of Saphir, and Houko Kawashima, the voice of Esmeraude. Also included in the booklet are the usual episode summaries for Act 23 and 24, character designs for Black Lady, Prince Demande and Saphir, backgrounds and screenshots from the episodes and a page for Fumio Osano, Osabu.

These episodes include an audio commentary featuring cast and crew from the show. This includes Munehisa Sakai, director of the first 26 episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal, Hisako Kanemoto, the voice of Sailor Mercury, Rina Sato, the voice of Sailor Mars, Ami Koshimizu, the voice of Sailor Jupiter, and Shizuka Ito, the voice of Sailor Venus.

Should you get this? Should you pay over $50 to buy and ship this set with only two episodes in a language you can’t speak when an English and Japanese version will eventually be released for much less and you can watch the series for free online in the mean time? That’s your call!

Keep reading for more images of this set’s packaging including images of all pages of the included special booklet.

Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 146 and 147 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 146 - Princess Ribuna

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon SuperS have been added to Hulu and Neon Alley. With episodes 146 and 147 we are almost done with the Amazon Trio as we have an episode right out of a sitcom plot followed by a tragic heartbreak for Makoto.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 146 - Kid wants balloon

Episode 146, Juban Holiday: The Carefree Princess, feels like an episode of Family Ties. This plot has been done time and time again. There’s a princess who is tired of a great life of luxury so she sneaks off for a day of innocent fun! Princess Rubina, in this case, crosses paths with Usagi and Chibiusa. She is completely ignorant about the normal world, thinking it fit to tell men to carry the bags of strangers or to steal balloons! In one particularly humorous scene we see a balloon salesman pressuring a kid into having a fit to try to get his mother to buy him a balloon. This seems to fail until Princess Rubina takes it upon herself to free the balloons from the vendor. This doesn’t go so well when payment is expected and ultimately somehow Hawk’s Eye is saddled with the bill. This method of simply asking the next closest person for payment reminds me of the parking lot attendant in Strange Brew (starring Jill Frappier) asking anyone for “six fifty”. Ultimately Rubina is targeted by Hawk’s Eye which leads to a hilarious Lemures who appears to be an elephant but turns out to be the ball, Elephanko.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 146 - Princess Ribuna hiding

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 147 - Makoto and Tiger's Eye dancing

Episode 147, Destined Partners? Makoto’s Innocence, continues Makoto’s tragic relationship drama. There’s a dance party and Makoto loves to dance, but doesn’t seem to get much action because in this universe guys don’t want to approach beautiful women because they’re too tall? This leads Ami and Makoto to dance together, so of course we need to ship these two. Ultimately Tiger’s Eye shows up and he has a plan to get all of the girls, because at this point we’re doing mass pick ups instead of just one at a time, and so he dances with Makoto to lure them all in. Makoto, who gets attached far too easily, imagines them dancing in white which I can only assume signifies a wedding. When she asks for one more dance Tiger’s Eye says he’ll be back later, and proceeds to dance with every girl there before just leaving. Makoto is determined to stick around and stays there all night, waiting for a man who would not come in the rain. This reminds me of Makoto’s first episode of the live action Sailor Moon series in which she is tricked into waiting for a boy who she has a crush on and ends up waiting for a long period of time in the rain before realizing it. Since this scene is not in the manga and the live action series came much later than the anime, it is possible that this episode served as some inspiration for that. It could also be a coincidence, since Jupiter’s thunder powers are inevitably related to the rain. Fish Eye shows up, because he won a sort of beauty contest, and brings Tiger’s Eye a polaroid of Makoto. In a first Fish Eye is the one to trap Makoto and call forth her Mirror of Dreams while Tiger’s Eye is the one to put his head into it.

The Sailor Moon Un Nouveau Voyage musical will be streamed on Niconico October 4th

Sailor Moon Un Nouveau Voyage musical poster

The final performance of the Sailor Moon Un Nouveau Voyage musical will be streamed online on Niconico October 4th. Viewers in Japan can watch it using this link. This is a paid broadcast which is limited to viewing in Japan only. I managed to watch the last musical online using this system though I have not had much luck watching content that is restricted by country lately. I’ll add some details on how to view it if I figure it out. This will be a Japanese only stream with no subtitles. It will be available to view time shifted until October 12th.

Nico Nico Video Logo

Presale tickets are 2000 points, which equates to 2000 yen or $17 US, and will be available until October 2nd to purchase via the Niconico web site. Day of tickets, available from October 4th to the 10th, will be 2500 points, which equates to 2500 yen or $21 US.

Miss Dream has mentioned on their Facebook and Twitter pages that they will be recording the stream and putting together an English fan subbed version. Given their usual turnaround with subtitling things it should be available within about a week of the broadcast. Once this happens, I will be sure to mention it here.

Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 144 and 145 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 144 - The girls at the beach

This week on Sailor Moon SuperS we get a couple of funny episodes that are all about romance. With this morning’s addition of episodes 144 and 145 to Hulu and Neon Alley we get Shingo’s final appearance as a pimp who falls in love with Ami and then it’s all about fat shaming Usagi as she tries to be a ballerina.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 144 - Shingo the pimp

Episode 144, Shining Summer Days: Ami Under the Sea-Breeze, ships Ami and Shingo. Isn’t Shingo great? Wasn’t it fun when they shipped him with his sister in the first season? We’ve come a long way since then as Shingo is now going after Ami! This is sadly the last time we see Shingo in the series. He was a fairly prominent character in the first season, having a smaller role in Sailor Moon R and since being seen only very occasionally. This is a good final episode for him with some great moments, such as where he pretends to be a pimp in order to discourage gentlemen callers from hitting on Usagi and her friends at the beach. When Ami shows up Shingo suddenly gets excited and needs to run off. Why is this? Perhaps he, in nothing but his bathing suit, feels that there is a level of excitement that he can’t quite hide. Tiger’s Eye tries to hit on Ami and as usual doesn’t do so well. He takes it quite poorly when Shingo seems to be the one getting in his way. He tries to drown him, expecting Ami to simply ignore him, but that doesn’t work and we get an excuse for a little Ami and Shingo mouth to mouth. This is yet another swimsuit episode. We seem to get about one a season so this is what we have for SuperS! One interesting relationship in this episode is Shingo and Chibiusa. Shingo doesn’t know that Chibiusa is his niece. Presumably he doesn’t die in the next 6 or so years and will actually properly get to be her uncle. He believes her to be his cousin but treats her more like a sister as they are living together. All around this episode is good for some laughs. Shingo was always a great character and it’s too bad we won’t be seeing him anymore.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 144 - Ami does mouth to mouth on Shingo

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 145 - Usagi and Chibiusa do ballet

Episode 145, Become a Prima: Usagi’s Ballet, has Usagi and her friends trying out ballet. The centres around a performance of the ballet Giselle. The target is a ballet teacher Yamagishi and his Prima Ballerina Kiriko who inexplicably looks a lot like Naru. He wants her to be Giselle but thinks she is missing something. Enter Fish Eye, in drag once again because Yamagishi is straight, blowing everyone away with his ballet moves. It seems like Yamagishi has picked him to be Giselle but it turns out this was more of a weird semi cruel motivational tool to get the most out of Kiriko. A recurring theme in this episode is fat shaming Usagi, who is ridiculously skinny. It’s like the way Usagi is animated doesn’t match the way she is actually supposed to look in the narrative in the show. Or perhaps it’s just logistics that in a show where everyone is equally skinny no one is actually skinny since it’s the new normal. Either way, Usagi has little bits of fat which do a sort of muffin top thing over a tutu whenever she wears one. Chibiusa teases her about this at first which is funny because as Usagi’s daughter she has already made changes to her waistline in the future. Later in the episode the monster puts a Tutu on the two of them and the waistline problem is pointed out again. Mamoru even notices the weight gain as he’s accused of being too slow to save them. There’s just nothing good about any of this. It’s a negative attitude that tells viewers that they need to be really skinny and I just don’t like it.

A new season of Sailor Moon Crystal has been announced and will feature Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Saturn

Sailor Moon Crystal season 3 announcement

It’s official! Following the airing of the final episode of Sailor Moon Crystal on Japanese TV a new set of episodes was announced. This was immediately confirmed on the Official Sailor Moon Site and Twitter account. The image included with this announcement shows Sailor Uranus’s Space Sword, Sailor Neptune’s Deep Aqua Mirror and symbols for all 10 Sailor Guardians. The Space Sword and Deep Aqua Mirror are two of the Talismans that have some importance in this next story arc. Missing is the third Talisman, Sailor Pluto’s Garnet Orb. I guess we’ve seen enough of it with the New Horizons photos of Pluto at this point.

Sailor Moon S episode 92 - Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus

As expected this will cover the Infinity story arc for the manga which introduces us to Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Saturn as well as the enemies the Death Busters which includes Professor Tomoe, Kaolinite and the Witches 5. This is the equivalent to the Sailor Moon S season of the original Anime. Not a lot of details are included about the actual release schedule of these episodes. It seems likely that these episodes will once again be available to stream on Nicinico and to air on TV in Japan. We don’t yet know which of these will come first. Will we continue with the model of releasing online first, with a more traditional model of releasing on TV first or perhaps have a simultaneous TV and online release? We will have to wait and see as new details will be coming on the official site.

Sailor Moon S episode 112 - Hotaru and Chibiusa

The Infinity arc of the Sailor Moon manga covers 12 acts by the new manga chapter numbering which was used for Crystal. This will likely mean 12 episodes in this story arc. The Dream arc, which is the equivalent of the Sailor Moon SuperS season of the original anime, covers an additional 11 episodes. If another year of the show was coming we would likely get both of these arcs. No such details were included in the press release which is no surprise as the Black Moon arc was not announced until late in the Dark Kingdom story arc of Crystal. At this point we don’t know how many more episodes are being planned. If we get that number we should be able to make a reasonable prediction about how many arcs that will cover.

Sailor Moon S episode 113 - Sailor Neptune, Pluto and Uranus

The Japanese announcements are breaking the story arcs into phases, with the Black Moon episodes being referred to as the second phase and this as the 3rd phase. Some also use the term season though with the first year of Sailor Moon Crystal covering two story arcs and arguably being considered one season this naming convention can be a bit confusing. Is this season 2, the second year of the show, or season 3, the third arc of the show? Is the term season even relevant to a show who’s primary method of distribution was online?

The press release also noted that a rebroadcast of Sailor Moon Crystal will begin next Monday starting with the Dark Kingdom arc.

Note that all but the first image in this post include art from the original Sailor Moon anime and not Sailor Moon Crystal.
