A new Sailor Moon musical based on the Princess Kaguya’s Lover manga side story is coming in 2020

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon manga vol. 11 - Princess Kaguya's Lover

We have finally gotten an update about the next Sailor Moon musical! According to an update on the official Sailor Moon site it will be coming next summer, in 2020, and it will be following the manga side story Princess Kaguya’s Lover. Fans may be most familiar with this story as Sailor Moon S The Movie, the film adaptation of the manga. This covers the story of Luna falling in love with a human while the earth is attacked by the evil ice alien Princess Snow Kaguya.

Nogizaka 46 x Sailor Moon musical Blu-Ray - Team Moon - Puppet Luna

Luna in the Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical

Though we don’t have any real details on the musical we can be fairly certain that it will have Luna transforming into Human Luna. As Luna features heavily in the manga story I am curious to see how they handle cat Luna before her human transformation in the final scenes. The recent Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical featured a fairly detailed puppet Luna which, aside from the somewhat distracting puppeteer, made for a very convincing effect. Could this technique have been done in anticipation of this musical? This would probably be a better choice than to just have people dressed up as cats as they did in the first Sailor Moon musical.

Artemis and Luna from the Summer 1993 Sailor Moon musical

Artemis and Luna in the first Sailor Moon musical (1993)

It’s worth mentioning that this was the third “New Musical” which was announced in early 2018 along with the Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical and The Super Live musical. At the time we had no details about what this third musical was about and it was simply referred to as “New Musical”. It was originally scheduled for summer 2019 but we now have confirmation that the musical is delayed until next summer. Without any other news about upcoming musicals it seems like we may not be getting a musical in 2018 which would make this year the first year without a Sailor Moon musical since 2012.

The name “New Musical” was almost certainly a placeholder so we should expect a better title to be announced at some point! We have quite a bit of time to wait for this musical so there’s no telling how much longer we’ll have to wait until we get more specifics on this one. Hopefully it won’t be too long! Will we be seeing those Dream Arc Sailor Moon Crystal movies before this musical is out? I won’t be holding my breath for either!

The soundtrack for the Sailor Moon The Super Live musical is now available worldwide on iTunes and Apple Music

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live

As the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live musical was being performed in the United States the soundtrack from the musical was released on iTunes and Apple Music around the globe! While Sailor Moon soundtracks are often just released in Japan this time the album is available on iTunes stores worldwide! The announcement on the official Sailor Moon site included direct links to the Japanese and US iTunes stores. I was also able to find it in the Canadian iTunes store with a little searching. If you have trouble finding the album in your store try searching for “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon” as there are a lot of results for “Sailor Moon”. I’ve never used Apple Music but I assume a similar search would get you what you need.

Something important to note is that these are only the instrumental versions of the songs in the musical, meaning there are no vocals included! I’m not sure why they wouldn’t include the complete versions of the tracks but a couple of fans on Twitter mentioned that all but a handful of the songs in the musical didn’t have lyrics. It seems like this album isn’t missing much by omitting the vocals.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live

Pricing is a bit inconsistent! The Japanese price is 2400 yen, which is about $22.50 US. The US price on the other hand is $15.99 US! Good deal. The Canadian price is $15.99 Canadian which is an even better deal since that’s the equivalent of about $12 US. I’m so used to paying $80 Canadian for a game that costs $60 in the US so this was a nice surprise. I’m used to import CDs and DVDs in Japan being absurdly expensive so being able to pay almost half of the Japanese price is a nice change.

As I haven’t seen this musical yet, it’s hard for me to comment much on these tracks! The songs are quite good from what I can tell with a fun electronic sound and some nice throwbacks to music from the original anime, but this is a musical that’s meant to be seen and heard so I’m really only getting a part of the experience!

Sailor Moon The Super Live - Team America cast

The track titles are either hilarious or terrible, depending on how you choose to look at such a thing. It’s a mix of romanized Japanese, actual English words and romanized versions of Japanese translations of English words. This makes for things like “Seeraa Gaadianzu” instead of “Sailor Guardians”. I’ve included two track lists below. The one on the left is the better version from the official site which uses English words when the words are English and otherwise uses romanized Japanese. The listing on the right is the mess we get on iTunes! With a little effort one should be able to update their own track title info in iTunes.

With the difficulty that often comes with importing expensive Sailor Moon media internationally it certainly is nice to see a release like this being worldwide. With the recent musicals having more and more showings outside of Japan this really is a move in the right direction for fans across the globe. Supporting releases like this is likely to have more visibility to those who are marketing Sailor Moon than simply importing goods. We can only hope that future Sailor Moon soundtracks will get a similar release. Some day I would certainly like to see a Sailor Moon musical released on video outside of Japan! Who knows what the future will bring? A lot could happen in the decades to come before Sailor Moon Crystal is wrapped up!

Dates and cast details for the New York and Washington D.C. showings of Sailor Moon the Super Live have been revealed

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live - Team America

We’ve finally got some specifics on the upcoming showings of the Sailor Moon The Super Live musical which will be taking place in New York City and Washington D.C. We also have specifics of who will be involved in the cast which has been dubbed Team America and I have detailed descriptions of those cast members later in the post. The name “Team America” bears an unfortunately and likely unintended resemblance to the all puppet adult film “Team America World Police” by South Park’s Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

First! The dates. The Washington D.C. performance will be on March 24th at 7pm at the Warner Theatre. This will be a full performance of the musical! It was previously announced that the cast of the musical would perform something at the opening ceremonies of the National Cherry Blossom Festival held on March 23rd but the length of those ceremonies made it unlikely the entire musical could be performed during the 90 minute ceremony. Fans in the area will be able to get tickets from Live Nation.

Sailor Moon SuperS for Sony PlayStation

The New York City show will have three performances over two days. The first will be Friday March 29th at 8pm followed by two showing on March 30th at 1pm and 5pm. The musical will be performed at the PlayStation theatre on Broadway in Manhattan New York. That’s right! Sailor Moon is finally returning to PlayStation after a long hiatus following the 1996 Sailor Moon SuperS fighting game for the original PlayStation. Fans can order tickets from AXS.

Now a word on the cast! Previously the Sailor Moon The Super Live Musical was performed by three different casts in Japan, those being the Pink Heart Cast, the Yellow Diamond Cast and the Blue Musical Note Cast. We had previously posted those casts list in earlier posts here on the site. So which Team is it that’s making up Team America? It’s actually a bit of a mix! Sailor Moon, Mercury and Mars as well as Queen Beryl are from the Blue Musical Note Cast while Sailor Jupiter and Venus are from the Yellow Diamond Cast. Kunzite and Tuxedo Mask were the same actresses for all performances in Japan and they will be reprising their roles in America. Dancers are from all casts, as is detailed at the end of the post.

A bit of background on each of the actresses for those wondering who they might be seeing in these shows!

Tomomi Kasai as Elizabeth in Kamen Rider W

Usagi Tsukino, Sailor Moon, will be performed by Tomomi Kasai. She was previously a member of the popular Japanese band AKB48. She was also in the Sentai series Kamen Rider W in which she played Elizabeth (the one of the left in the above picture). You can learn more about Tomomi Kasai from her official web site, Twitter feed or Instagram page.

Momoko Kaechi as Sailor Mercury

Momoko Kaechi will be playing Sailor Mercury. She previously appeared in a few Japanese drama series and films. You can follow her on Twitter where she occasionally posts images of a Sailor Mercury doll in her travels.

Yui Hasegawa as Sailor Mars

Yui Hasegawa will portray Sailor Mars. Her main acting experience is as a voice actor who’s works include video games such as Phantasy Star Online 2. She has previous stage acting experience as well including portraying Viluy of the Witches 5 in the Sailor Moon Un Nouveau Voyage musical. For more about Yui Hasegawa follow her on Twitter or check out her official web site.

Kanna Matsuzaki as Sailor Jupiter

Sailor Jupiter will be played by Kanna Matsuzaki. She is an actress and model who has a small role in a recently released film called Blood Club Dolls. You can follow her on Instagram where she occasionally posts pictures of cats.

Yu Nakanishi as Sailor Venus

Sailor Venus will be portrayed by Yu Nakanishi. She is a dancer and actress from movies and other stage plays including Luna Rossa and Ranpo Chronicle. For more on Yu Nakanishi you can follow her Twitter account or check out her official site.

Makoto Aikawa as Queen Beryl

Queen Beryl is played by Makoto Aikawa. She is an actress who has performed in a number of stage plays in the past couple of years. You can see more of her stuff by following her Twitter feed, Instagram page or checking out her official web site.

Reo Sanada as Kunzite

Reo Sanada will play Kunzite of the Shitennou. As with all musicals since La reconquista we have all male characters portrayed by women and The Super Live continues with this tradition. Reo Sanada is a transgender woman with experience in acting and dance. Fans looking for more can check out her Instragram page.

Riona Tatemichi as Rubeus

The important role of Tuxedo Mask will be performed by Riona Tatemichi who is playing her fourth character in a Sailor Moon musical! She first played Rubeus in the Petite Étrangère musical and then played Hawk’s Eye in the Amour Eternal musical and finally was Taiki Kou, Sailor Star Maker of the Sailor Starlights, in the Le Mouvement Final musical. In addition to her many Sailor Moon credits she has also appeared in a number of other stage musicals including some based on Utena and Gundam. You can find out more about Riona Tatemichi from her Twitter feed or official web site.

Riona Tatemichi as Tuxedo Mask

Finally we have a group of dancers. Though I have not yet seen the musical we can see from various photos that these five characters appear to be Dark Kingdom monsters of some type. These are generally non singing role which are portrayed by professional dancers. With the original three teams the various dancers often performed on more than one team and here we have a mix of dancers from the three teams. This includes Atsumi Matsubayashi, from the and teams, Izumi Niihashi, from the and teams, Ayumi Higashikawa, from the team, Moeko Koizumi from the and teams, and finally Hinako Aikawa from the team. Note that the image below does not feature the five dancers from Team America, as they have not performed together in the past. This is another of the teams from one of the Super Live performances.

Dancers from the Sailor Moon The Super Live musical

Will any of you be lucky enough to be attending either of these showings? These are much closer to my home town than any other musical performance has ever taken place! I’ve taken road trips to New York and Baltimore (near to Washington D.C.) in the past with little trouble. Unfortunately with two children under 2 years old at this time it seems unlikely I’ll be able to make the trip. Please let us know if you plan on attending and how it goes!

The Sailor Moon The Super Live Musical is coming to New York City and Washington D.C.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live - Poster

More good news for Sailor Moon fans in the North Eastern United States! The Super Live Musical will be performed in both New York City and Washington D.C. in March! We had previously learned that the cast of Sailor Moon The Super Live would be involved with the opening ceremonies of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. on March 23rd 2019 though we didn’t have any specifics of full performances. It is now indicated on the official Sailor Moon site that the musical will be coming to New York City and Washington D.C., which likely means at least one full performance in each city. No specifics have yet been given besides that these will both take place during March 2019. We will have more information as it becomes available. For now you can watch the trailer below which announces the North American showings.

Do any of you plan on attending either of these showings? New York City is the closets a musical has ever been performed to my home! I’ve driven to each of these cities but I had less babies around the house back then! How far would you need to go in order to see one of these?

The Cast of the Sailor Moon The Super Live musical will perform at the Washington D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival March 23rd

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live - Poster

Good news for Sailor Moon musical fans in the US Capital area! As reported on the Official Sailor Moon site, songs from the Sailor Moon The Super Live musical will be performed at the National Cherry Blossom Festival held in Washington D.C. on March 23rd! The specifics of the performance aren’t given yet though it is mentioned that the cast will be involved with the opening ceremonies which will take place from 5 to 6:30pm on March 23rd. It seems unlikely the entire musical will be part of these opening ceremonies. Perhaps only some key songs will be featured with a full performance taking place at a later time. We don’t have such details at this time. We can see from this Tweet from Evan MacIsaac indicates that the director has stated that they are hoping to perform the entire musical.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C.

Also in attendance at the opening ceremonies is JPop artist T.M.Revolution who has performed a number of anime themes including Heart of Sword, the third ending theme for Rurouni Kenshin, and six songs for the series Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny. (Update: It seems as if T.M.Revolution was at last year’s opening ceremonies. Though his presence is mentioned on the Crunchyroll site this may be a mistake based on photos of him at least year’s event being on the festival’s site. He may not be appearing this year.)

The Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray March 20th

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical - Sayuri Inoue and Mizuki Yamashita as Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon in Weekly Shonen Magazine

Good news for musical fans who have TVs that were made after 1992! It has been announced on the official Sailor Moon site that the recent Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical will be released not only on low resolution DVD but also on high definition Blu-Ray! This 3 disk set will include two version of the musical, that being both the Team Moon and Team Star versions, as well as bonus features! This is great news given the last 5 musicals, all released long after Blu-Rays and high definition televisions were commonplace, were only released on a low quality 480i DVD. I’ve complained about this time and time again as the past musical releases are really not in keeping with where the rest of the video industry is. This has become particularly frustrating in light of the fact that streaming and digital versions of the musical, uniquely available in Japan, are available in significantly higher resolutions than the DVD releases. I had previously suspected that the reason for the low quality releases was that older style video cameras had been used for the recordings, but this does not appear to be the case.

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical - The entire cast

This is particularly useful for North American fans who would normally not be able to play Japanese DVDs but are able to play Japanese Blu-Rays. Japan is in DVD region 2, while North America is in DVD region 1, requiring a region free DVD player to be able to watch a Japanese DVD. When it comes to Blu-Ray discs however a different system based on letters is used and both North America and Japan are part of Blu-Ray region A. I play all of my imported Japanese Blu-Rays on my off the shelf Canadian PlayStation 3 and 4 systems without issue. Keep in mind that these Japanese releases do not have any subtitles so fans will only be able to watch them in Japanese.

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon Musical - Sailor Mercury, Mars and Moon

These releases unfortunately will not be cheap! The Blu-Ray release is 9504 yen, about $84 US, and the DVD at a modest 8424 yen, about $75. There’s certainly a good deal of content at that price but this still seems quite expensive! Bonus features on the third disc will include rehearsal footage, backstage video and more.

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical - Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon

I certainly hope that this means we will be getting Blu-Ray releases of musicals in the future. While that may be the case this release may also be given more attention due to the fact that it involves members of the band Nogizaka46 and will appeal to a new audience. We don’t have any box art yet but I think a reversible cover with Team Moon and Team Star would be fun. Do you plan on picking up this release?

The Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical will air on Japanese television September 29th and 30th which may lead to a fan subbed version being produced

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical - The entire cast

News has been posted to the Official Sailor Moon Site stating that at the end of September the Nogizaka x Sailor Moon musical will be airing on Japanese TV. The showings, on TBS channel 2 in Japan, will be held on two days to showcase both Team Star, September 29th, and Team Moon, September 30th. Each showing is at 5pm Japan Standard Time. What does this mean for us fans out here on the other side of the globe far from being basked in the radio waves of Tokyo Tower? In the past when a streaming version of the musical was made available this meant that some fan would record the broadcast and eventually create an English fan subbed version of the musical. I have been watching the releases from Miss Dream for the past many years but a takedown notice by King Records has lead to them removing their hosted files for the Petite Étrangère, Un Nouveau Voyage, Amour Eternal and Le Mouvement Final musicals. What does this mean for the new musical? I can’t say for sure.

Last week Miss Dream content manager Sailor Busters posted to her Twitter account stating her intention to record and upload the musical for the site.

It seems like the fan subbing group intends to share the musical. They may of course decide not to rather than risk another takedown notice after all the hard work that goes into translating and subtitling a musical. If it does get subbed and King Records sends another takedown notice they would likely comply and remove the content. I can’t predict the future but it seems like a subbed version of the musical is a possibility.

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical - Team Star

I’m always hesitant to advocate flat out piracy on this site. In this case fan subs are thought to occupy a grey area where they aren’t legal but in cases such as this they seem to do little or nothing to negatively affect any legal product sales in Japan. Because of this most fan sub groups will be removed once there is a legal release of that content. I always encourage fans to support the official releases when possible. In this case the musicals have generally been released on video in Japan only. These releases are region coded with DVD region 2 which will not play in North America. These have not included any English audio or subtitles. Further the digital versions are usually restricted to users in Japan. That said things are getting more complicated as we have started to see performances and even theatrical showings of recent musicals here in North America.

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical - Team Moon

Could the takedown notices by King Records be an indication of plans for a North American release of the musicals? I can only speculate as to what this means. It may simply be the case that they are trying to avoid having Japanese fans, who might otherwise pay for their legal releases, from downloading these English fan subbed releases and disabling the soft subtitles to watch them without any English text. The Internet, after all, has no borders. These sort of things didn’t happen back in the days of tape swapping and were less relevant with hard subbed videos which would be that much less appealing to a Japanese viewer. Similarly North American releases of Japanese anime on DVD and Blu-Ray could be imported by Japanese viewers often at a fraction of the cost of expensive Japanese releases. In the case of Sailor Moon this hasn’t been much of an issue with the massive difference in quality between Japanese and domestic releases.

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical - Sayuri Inoue and Mizuki Yamashita as Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon in Weekly Shonen Magazine

What do you think? Have you been watching the Miss Dream subs of the musicals like many others in the fan community? Are you hoping to have a chance to watch the Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical as well? What do you think about the morality of sharing fan subs of releases not legally available in a country?

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live musical cast

Last weekend the Sailor Moon Official Site was updated with images of the entire cast of the upcoming Sailor Moon The Super Live musical. We had previously gotten a complete cast listing and some partially obscured images of the cast. Here we have the Pink Heart, Yellow Diamond and Blue Musical Note casts. I had previously made an attempt to translate most of the cast names and was missing only a few. I’ve been able to fill in the blanks with details from a post on Anime News Network. The image on the official site and those posted to Twitter were a bit confusing with a number of repeated images for Queen Beryl, Kunzite and Tuxedo Mask who’s actors span multiple teams. I attempted to simplify them in the amalgamated image above. The Super Live Musical web site also gives a decent matrix showing them all. Check out the updated cast listings, with separate images, below.

Sailor Moon The Super Live Musical - Pink Heart Cast

Pink Heart Cast:

Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino: Kanae Yumemiya
Sailor Mercury/Ami Mizuno: Cocona
Sailor Mars/Rei Hino: Kitomi Hirai (2)
Sailor Jupiter/Makoto Kino: Kie Obana
Sailor Venus/Minako Aino: Sena Hooper

Sailor Moon The Super Live Musical - Yellow Diamond Cast

Yellow Diamond Cast:

Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino: Natsuki Koga (2)
Sailor Mercury/Ami Mizuno: Umino Kawamura (2)
Sailor Mars/Rei Hino: Kyoko Ninomiya
Sailor Jupiter/Makoto Kino: Kanna Matsuzaki
Sailor Venus/Minako Aino: Yu Nakanishi

Sailor Mercury/Ami Mizuno: Momoko Kaechi
Sailor Mars/Rei Hino: Yui Hasegawa
Sailor Jupiter/Makoto Kino: Shio Yamazaki (2)
Sailor Venus/Minako Aino: Saaya Goto (2)

Confusingly, there are two Queen Beryls over the three teams.

Sailor Moon The Super Live Musical - Pink Heart and Yellow Diamond Queen Beryl

Pink Heart and Yellow Diamond Cast:

Queen Beryl: Kyoka

Sailor Moon The Super Live Musical - Blue Musical Note Queen Beryl

Blue Musical Note Cast:

Kunzite and Tuxedo Mask are the same amongst all three teams, as was reported last time.

Sailor Moon The Super Live Musical - Kunzite and Tuxedo Mask

Pink Heart, Yellow Diamond and Blue Musical Note Cast:

Kunzite: Sanada Reo
Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru Chiba: Riona Tatemichi

What do you think of the look of the latest Sailor Teams? Casting for Tuxedo Mask is always important. Do you think Riona Tatemichi who played Taiki in the Le Mouvement Final musical fits the part? The musical starts at the end of the month on August 31st and will run until September 9th in Tokyo. It will also be held at the Japonismes event in Paris November 3rd and 4th. With so many showings there are often multiple teams doing shows on the same day. Good news for the cast members who get to relax between showings but a lot of work for Sanada Reo and Riona Tatemichi was are present for every performance! Are any of you planning on seeing this one?

Here’s a first look at the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live musical

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live - Poster

The official Sailor Moon site has been updated with a full list of the cast of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live musical as well as a trailer and a poster but for whatever reason we can’t see any of the actor’s faces in them. Seems like an odd decision since the cast has been revealed but there’s a good reason for this! There is no single cast of this musical but rather three different teams! The Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical had Team Moon and Team Star and we’re doing one more here with teams , and which are denoted simply by those coloured characters. I don’t know what the naming convention will be in Japanese but these are pink heart, yellow diamond and blue musical note. Sounds a bit like Lucky Charms marshmallows when it’s said like that. Check out the trailer embedded below.

As with other recent musicals we once again have an all female cast which includes the Sailor Team, which is split up into three groups, as well Queen Beryl, Kunzite and Tuxedo Mask which are the same actors throughout the different groups. This tells us the story, if there is some overarching story, will be that of the Dark Moon story arc once again. We also have a series of extras, some of which are in two groups, which are likely playing monsters or other types of background characters. I’ve done my best to translate the names and find a public social media profile for most of these actors but for some of them I wasn’t able to find anything and so I left the original untranslated Japanese names. If anyone has any more details for some of these please feel free to share them in the comments and I’ll update the post.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live - Sailor Venus

We have a few returning actors in this musical. Riona Tatemichi, who will be portraying Tuxedo Mask with all casts, was previously cast as Taiki Kou, Sailor Star Maker, in the Le Mouvement Final musical. Yui Hasegawa, who will be Sailor Mars in the (Blue Musical Note) group was also Viluy of the Witches 5 in the Un Nouveau Voyage musical.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live - Sailor Team

This musical will be taking place quite soon with performances in Tokyo being held from August 31st to September 9th and performances at Japonismes, a cultural event in Paris, being held November 3rd and 4th. Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon Musical - Usagi and Tuxedo Mask

The latest Sailor Moon musical, Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon musical, began performances in Japan on June 8th! Here’s a look at that musical with photos from the set and other promotional images. As we’ve mentioned previously this musical features band members of the Japanese all girl pop band Nogizaka46 split into two teams, Team Star and Team Moon, which are in two performances of the musical. The rest of the all female cast is mostly comprised of musical actresses.

Nogizaka46 x Sailor Moon Musical - Both Sailor Teams

This musical covers the Dark Kingdom arc of the manga which features Queen Beryl and the Shitennou. We can see from these photos that the story will include the masquerade ball from Act 4 of the manga, Masquerade Dance Party.
