The Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show has been canceled

After numerous delays over many years the Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show has been canceled. This star studded show was originally planned for the summer of 2020 but was delayed until the summer of 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year the decision to postpone the show until the summer of 2023 was taken but now the show has been canceled for good. Two pieces of art done by Naoko Takeuchi have been released. These would have been used as part of the show’s promotion but with the show now canceled they are being shared to fans.

This show would have featured figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva as Sailor Moon as well as a number of other world class figures skaters such as Kurt Browning.

The Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show has been postponed to 2023

The Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Prism On Ice event which was originally planned for the summer of 2020 and was more recently going to take place later this year has been delayed for a third time. It is now scheduled for June of 2023. Though it isn’t explained explicitly on the Sailor Moon Official Site it seems likely that this delay is once again due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has seen rising cases in Japan even over the last couple of weeks.

The event, featuring Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva, was originally announced before the pandemic began. The star headed back to Japan early in 2020 to be ready for the event which was ultimately delayed due to the state of the pandemic in 2020, then again in 2021 and now once again in 2022. She is currently back in her home country of Russia. The ongoing Russian war and invasion of Ukraine may be causing complications with the event but there hasn’t been any specific indication of this.

As has been the case in the past those who already have tickets have the option to attend with the specific date when they can attend being dictated by the date on which they originally had tickets. Refunds are also available for those who are unable to attend at the new date and time.

Needless to say this sort of delay poses a particular challenge for any international fans who had made plans to attend. Hopefully this delay was announced early enough that no one is going be stuck with a plane ticket and hotel reservation planned around an ice show which isn’t currently scheduled!

The Sailor Moon Prism on Ice musical has been delayed until the summer of 2022

The Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Prism on Ice musical, which had been planned for this June, has been delayed by one year until June of 2022 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The ice skating show, which had originally been scheduled for June of 2020, had previously been delayed due to the pandemic. Some events, such as the Princess Kaguya’s Lover musical which is now scheduled for September of 2021, are taking place this year. The same was not possible for the Prism on Ice event.

The stated reasons for this delay are Japan’s travel restrictions and requirements to quarantine for visitors from many countries. This has already meant that foreign visitors would not be attending this summer’s Tokyo Olympic games. While this is not a concern for September’s Sailor Moon musical, an event which is able to generate sufficient ticket sales while selling exclusively to Japanese customers, the same is not true for the Prism on Ice show. This skating event features performers from around the world which made the logistics complicated.

It remains to be seen what aspects of the show might have changed following two years of delay. The show’s main star, Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva, was set to play Sailor Moon. She was diagnosed with COVID-19 late last year and suffered from a back injury around the same time. This has kept her from competing. It’s possible that the delay may also be to accommodate Evgenia Medvedeva’s schedule in the hopes that she will be in a better condition to perform in the show by next summer. She is a huge Sailor Moon fan and even traveled back to Japan early, around this time last year, to prepare for the event before it was delayed the first time.

Regardless of what happens with the musical we certainly hope for a quick recovery for Evgenia Medvedeva. For fans who were hoping to see this event they may have a chance by next summer to visit Tokyo, assuming travel restrictions are lifted by then. Are you hoping to make it to Japan for this one?

The Sailor Moon official site has announced that the Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show which was originally planned for early June 2020 has been delayed by a year, now taking place in June of 2021, due to safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The original planned dates for this show were June 5th, 6th and 7th 2020 and the new dates are June 4th, 5th and 6th 2021.

Customers who had previously bought tickets to the show are being offered tickets for the new dates and times. Refunds are also available. Over the past few weeks we had speculated that this event might be delayed. The show’s star Evgenia Medvedeva headed to Tokyo in anticipation of border shut downs between Canada and Japan which suggested the show was still planned, but finally it was decided that this event should not be held as originally scheduled.

It remains to be seen what changes, if any, may occur to the cast of the show. A year is certainly a long time so it’s possible that some of the many world class figure skaters who were originally scheduled for the event may not be able to take part of the show a year later.

While this delay is an unfortunate consequence of this pandemic which has caused a lot of hardship for people across the globe, it is certainly a prudent decision all considered. If any fans had been planning on traveling to Japan for this show it may be time to reconsider international travel this summer. Stay safe and stay healthy everyone!

Evgenia Medvedeva is headed to Japan in anticipation of the Sailor Moon Prism on Ice show

Last week I shared the poster for the upcoming Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show which is planned for June. I also mentioned that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these dates could be in question. On Wednesday Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva, who will star as Sailor Moon in the show, mentioned on Instagram that she is currently on her way to Japan in advance of anticipated border closures between Canada and Japan. As she recently returned from the United States to Canada, she mentions having been in quarantine. This is likely the 14 days of self isolation mandated by the Canadian Government for those returning from international travel. She also makes reference to ice rinks and gyms being closed, as is currently the case throughout Ontario.

She had the following to say:

I ended quarantine after returning from the US to Canada. I have been spending time at home for more than last two weeks. The ice rinks and gyms are closed in Canada, nothing works. As you know, we will have “Prism on ice” (sailor moon show) this June in Japan. In accordance with border closures between Canada and Japan for an indefinite period, my team and I decided to leave Canada and fly to Japan in advance. I am safe and everything is good! I love all of you, be safe and please take care of yourself and your nearest and dearest!

While it is certainly possible that this event could be impacted by the ongoing pandemic, it seems like it isn’t canceled yet! Evgenia Medvedeva is headed to Japan early in order to work on her training in anticipation of this show. She is not the only person traveling to Japan from Canada and any further restrictions on international travel could impact who might be available for this show.

If you’re living outside of Japan and were hoping to attend this show, I would suggest you reconsider any international travel this summer. Even if the show continues as planned, the worldwide health crisis is likely to be ongoing in many countries and spending time traveling and in airports is a risk which should not be taken lightly.

Regardless of what happens we are certainly hoping Evgenia Medvedeva and the rest of the cast and crew involved with the show continue to be healthy during these difficult times. Stay safe, stay healthy and take care of yourselves.

The Sailor Moon official site has been updated with the poster for the upcoming Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show. This poster gives us a look at Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva as Sailor Moon. She had previously worn what appears to be the same costume at a press event last month.

We didn’t get much in the way of new details. We had previously learned of the cast and schedule for the ice show, which will take place in Tokyo the weekend of June 5th to the 7th. These dates are still listed on the official site. Though June is still a few months away, it’s certainly possible that this schedule will be impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis which is affecting not only Japan but countries worldwide This event includes talent from around the globe including Russia, the United States of America, Canada and of course Japan. Fans who were planning on attending may want to reconsider any international travel plans they would have had for the next few months.

It’s worth noting that this event is scheduled to occur nearly two months before the original planned dates for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which would have taken place from July 4th to August 9th of this year, but have been delayed until 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic.

The Sailor Moon official site has posted a lot of details about the upcoming Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show which was announced last summer. The event will be taking place June 5th to the 7th at the KOSÉ Shin Yokohama Skate Center in Tokyo. We had previously learned that Evgenia Medvedeva, a Russian figure skater and Olympic medalist, was going to be in the show. We now have confirmation that she will be playing Sailor Moon herself! An article at Oricon includes photos of Evgenia Medvedeva in her Sailor Moon costume! The rest of the cast includes Sailor Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus as well as Tuxedo Mask. The villains are the Dark Kingdom’s Queen Bery, Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite and Kunzite. All of the above mentioned characters will be portrayed by figure skaters, most of whom are world class competitive skaters, from around the world.

Also appearing in the musical is Anza as Queen Serenity. Anza is best known to Sailor Moon fans as the first to play Sailor Moon in a Sailor Moon musical. She continued in this role for many years. The other special guest, who’s role is not mentioned, is Kurt Browning. He is a World Champion figure skater who was a well known sports celebrity here in Canada in the 1990s.

The show will also have a voice cast which includes the main cast from Sailor Moon Crystal. Only the Sailor Guardians currently have voice actors listed at this time. This could mean that the show will mainly feature those characters in spoken roles or perhaps the others will be announced at a later time. The details on the site list them as being the voice actors from the Sailor Moon Eternal films. As the Dark Kingdom specific characters will not be in the Sailor Moon Eternal films, they may not have been mentioned for this reason. It may also prove more complicated in booking voice talent from a previous season when there hadn’t been an expectation for them to be reprising their roles in the future.

Music will be by Akiko Kosaka, who has been involved with music in the original Sailor Moon anime, the Sailor Moon Musicals and Sailor Moon Crystal.

A Sailor Moon Ice Show starring Evgenia Medvedeva is coming to Japan in June 2020

During the Usagi’s Birthday event held on June 30th in Japan a number of things were announced, one of which was a Sailor Moon Ice Show, that being a figure skating show, which will be taking place in June of 2020. This was then shared on the Sailor Moon Official Site. Though we don’t have many details of what this will be like it was announced that Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva will be involved. I’ve posted about Evgenia Medvedeva on this site a number of times. She first made an impression on the Sailor Moon fan community with her Sailor Moon inspired figure skating routine in which she skated to Moonlight Densetsu, the original Sailor Moon anime’s opening theme, and transformed into a Sailor Moon costume during her performance. She later met with Naoko Takeuchi who awarded her with a sketch. She’s a dedicated fan of anime and Sailor Moon specifically. Below you will find a video of her comments, in English, on joining this show.

What will this show be all about? We can only speculate at this point. With only one star announced to date we do at least know that it will feature at least one professional figure skater. Will this be something like the Disney On Ice type of shows? Honestly I’ve never seen this kind of show so I wouldn’t know where to start. If any of you are fans of figure skating shows, do you have thoughts on what this might be like?

Though skating isn’t referenced in the Sailor Moon manga the original Sailor Moon anime features skating in episode 39, Paired With a Monster: Makoto, the Ice Skating Queen. In this episode we are told that skating was the most popular sport in Silver Millennium. The Sailor Moon Another Story RPG for the Super Famicom also shows a skating rink on the Moon. It is certainly possible that the story of the Ice Show will reference this episode of the original anime.

As a Canadian I’m inclined to refer to this as simply “skating” and not “ice skating” because what else do people skate on? Are roller skates actually more popular than ice skates in some places? As the event is simply being called an “Ice Show” by official sources this is what I will call it as well.
