Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère musical first impressions

Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère musical - Tuxedo Mask kissing Black Lady

On Sunday, September 7th, the new Sailor Moon musical Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère (French for Small Stranger) was broadcast streaming on Niconico. Though the sign up pages are confusing a ticket to watch the live stream can be purchased even from North America. The stream which was previously broadcast live can still be viewed on the Niconico site. Consider viewing it this way to support the musical if you intend on downloading a copy later. For those waiting for a version with English subtitles the gang over at Miss Dream are currently translating it. I watched the stream of the musical on Sunday and although I don’t really understand Japanese I found it easy enough to follow as the story of the Black Moon Clan, Chibiusa, Sailor Pluto and Crystal Tokyo has been told before a few times. My review may include spoilers for events that are mostly known to Sailor Moon fans. It may include mistakes since I may have misinterpreted some events.

Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère musical - Sailor Pluto and Chibiusa

The musical begins with Chibiusa already in the present though the opening scene, which is itself a flashback, shows us the future events in Crystal Tokyo as the Black Moon Clan attack. Neo Queen Serenity, seen in this future, is played by Satomi Okubo, the actress who plays Usagi. At the end of the musical she appears to be played by another actress, likely because the short notice wardrobe change would be tough. Usagi and Chibiusa’s relationship is pretty hostile, as is expected, and Mamoru is trying hard to get along with both, much to Usagi’s frustration.

Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère musical - Chibiusa and Usagi

The Sailor Team is in a rock band of sort named Usagi Band, though Usagi is not present during their performance. There is a new actress, Momoyo Koyama, who plays Sailor Mercury. The rest of the cast is returning. Sailor Mercury, Mars and Jupiter aren’t in the musical a ton as they stay behind while Sailor Moon, Venus and Chibiusa go to the future.

Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère musical - Usagi Band

The Black Moon Clan are not all represented. The four Ayakashi sisters are not in this musical, who’s cast is entirely comprised of women, though Rubeus, Saphire and Prince Demande, all men, do appear along with Esmeraude, the only woman in the Black Moon Clan. My Japanese is not great though it seemed to be insinuated that some, perhaps all, of the Black Moon Clan are actually Droids. If this is the case this is a considerable departure from the Manga.

Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère musical - Black Lady

As expected Wise Man gets his hands on Chibiusa and transforms her into Black Lady. We get a nice inappropriate father/daughter kiss between Tuxedo Mask and Black Lady. Sailor Pluto dies sacrificing herself and this shock causes Black Lady to become young again and transform into Sailor Chibi Moon. In the manga this is what happens though in the anime Chibiusa leaves at the end of Sailor Moon R without having transformed, returning only partway through Sailor Moon S.

Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère musical - Sailor Chibi Moon mourns Sailor Pluto

Back in the present time Chibiusa has a tearful farewell with her friends after which the curtain lowers and the musical is done. Once the performers have all bowed to the audience another small bit follows as Chibiusa, still dressed as Sailor Chibi Moon, gives a letter to Usagi, still dressed as Sailor Moon, explaining that Chibiusa will be returning to complete her training. This letter comes from Usagi’s future self, Neo Queen Serenity. We will likely see Chibiusa continue to be involved in future musicals.

Overall I found the musical quite enjoyable. The performances and singing were good. My favourite performance, as with the first musical, was Yuga Yamato as Tuxedo Mask and King Endymion. Check it out if you have a chance, though I would certainly suggest watching last year’s musical, La Reconquista, first.

Keep reading for more screenshots from the musical.

There are two actors playing the role of Chibiusa which was the case for earlier musicals in which she appeared. Sabrina Grdevich, the voice of Anne and Sailor Pluto, to appear at Unplugged Expo in Toronto September 27th and 28th

Anne Granger voiced by Sabrina Grdevich

Sabrina Grdevich joins the guest list at Unplugged Expo 3 to be held at the Chestnut Conference Centre September 27th and 28th in Toronto. Sabrina Grdevich has done a great number of voices in Sailor Moon! She provided the voice of Anne Granger, the alien, during the Doom Tree Saga. Later in Sailor Moon R she provided the voice of Sailor Pluto as heard through the Luna Sphere and during her appearances later in that season and in the S and SuperS movies. Susan Aceron took on the role of Sailor Pluto during Sailor Moon S. Sabrina Grdevich also supplied the voices of many monsters such as the Jumo the evil doll, Ninjana and Nancy Vargas, the photographer turned monster, Mistrust, a monster who creates illusions in Ami’s mind, as well as Andrew’s younger sister Lizzie.

Outside of Sailor Moon she has also done some live action work including a recurring role in the Canadian drama traders and the android whose face opens up in A.I..

Many Sailor Moon references in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic

Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic

The latest issue of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Micro Series comic, issue #8 featuring Princess Celestia on the cover, includes a few familiar faces for Sailor Moon fans! Inside these pages are pony versions of Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune (pictured above), Sailor Saturn and Sailor Chibi Moon (pictured below) and Sailor Pluto (in the third photo).

Sailor Saturn and Sailor Chibi Moon in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic book

The similar colours and hair styles aren’t the only similarity as these ponies also have very specific cutie marks which are the symbols of their respective planets and in Sailor Chibi Moon’s case a heart with moon in it which is similar but not identical to any single one of her transformation brooches.

Sailor Pluto in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic book

In addition to these ponies we can also see the Moon Stick sitting on Princess Celestia’s night stand. The other item could be Sailor Neptune’s Deep Aqua Mirror but I’m unsure if this is an intentional reference or not.

This issue’s artist, Amy Mebberson, is a Sailor Moon fan. Check out more of her work, including some Sailor Moon sketches, on her deviantART page, tumblr or Twitter. Also be sure to check out her web comic Pocket Princesses.

Below I’ve included the full panels which include these references for context. The comic hit store shelves this past Wednesday so if you’re interested in picking it up your local comic book store may still have it in stock.

Is this Sailor Moon personal organizer giving us bad news?

Sailor Moon schedule book covers

No.

Oh did you want more detail than that? There are new Sailor Moon schedule books coming out next year that have been mentioned on the official Sailor Moon site. There are more details about these on the JList online store. This has caused some concerns amongst a number of fans related to delays in the anime. Since the schedule book is for 2014 many are claiming this means the show is delayed until 2014. While there is certainly ample evidence of a delay for the show and 2014 is a possibility, there doesn’t seem to be a good reason to believe that this product is any indication of this. Many franchises have calendars and planners made every year and the time frames they cover have little to no significance beyond the functionality of the product. It should also be considered that the art contained in these is from the original Sailor Moon anime and has nothing to do with the new anime series originally scheduled to air this summer. These are generic Sailor Moon products, not new Sailor Moon anime products.

Sailor Moon schedule book - Sailor Pluto, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Uranus - "Will we be making a return in 2015?"

Oh but there’s more! On one page that we can see there is an image of Sailor Pluto, Neptune and Uranus with writing that says “Will we be making a return in 2015?”. What could this completely vague statement mean? Some have taken this to mean that the new anime is delayed until 2015. If this were really the case I think it’s far too early to be making such a long term prediction. Others are expecting that the new anime will be scheduled in such a way that these three characters will finally be making an appearance some time in 2015. Again this seem like a fairly specific prediction to be making so early in the life cycle of this new anime. Somewhat more plausible are interpretations by such people as the Sailor Moon video game petition who made guesses such as Sailor Moon S airing that year, a new planner book featuring them more prominently or something completely different. This is again not new art but the cover of the Sailor Moon S vol. 8 laser disc.
