Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 156 and 157 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 156 - Kamoi paints Usagi

Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 156 and 157 were added to Hulu and Neon Alley this morning. This week’s episodes are all about Chibiusa as she befriends a starving artist and a kid who has a dream of making a flying bike.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 156 - Kamoi paints CereCere

Episode 156, Don’t Lose Sight of Your Dreams: the Mirror of Truth, is all about starving artists. Literally. Chibiusa makes a painting of Usagi, but Usagi doesn’t think it’s as pretty as her. This sheds light on what this episode tries to tell us is a common problem with artists as we meet Kamoi, who has the same problem with all of his clients. He makes extremely accurate portraits of his clients but they are all upset, wanting him to make them prettier than they really are! Usagi and Chibiusa feed Kamoi because he is literally starving, letting his artistic integrity get in the way of profits. Enter CereCere, who is apparently interested not only in finding pure hearts but also in corrupting them. She offers to fund Kamoi if he paints her in a flattering way, which he reluctantly agrees to. There’s a fight and then Kamoi gets his groove back, pledging to always be honest in his work. Once Chibiusa has completed her portrait of Usagi, Kamoi asks her what the work is titled. In a rare moment of insight into Chibiusa and Usagi’s real relationship she reveals that she has named it “The Person I Most Admire”.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 157 - Hiroki and the St. Louis

Episode 157, Pegasus Disappears: Wavering Friendship, explores the plausibility of a flying bike! Now I know this is a show about magical girls who defy science and logic at every turn, but I just can’t get my mind around the physics of this flying bike. Young Hiroki basically is trying to construct a bike which is all pimped out with wings which will fly. This isn’t working because you can’t really make a bicycle fly. Kyuusuke, who is always kind of a jerk, plainly states that what he is doing is impossible. His evidence is simply that if bikes could fly there would be flying bikes all over the sky! This is actually a pretty decent point. The best evidence that bikes can’t fly isn’t so much an in depth exploration of the physics involved but rather the realization that in about 200 years of bicycles and 100 years of planes we don’t have flying bikes. This isn’t the FAA keeping the little man down. It’s just incredibly impractical. This said what Hiroki is trying to do with his machine, the St. Louis, is actually more of a glider. He’s not going full tilt on a flat surface trying to get some lift. He’s speeding down a hill and off a cliff trying to glide. Gliders exist so from that point of view what he’s doing isn’t total nonsense. Ultimately, with Kyuusuke’s help, Hiroki is able to get the St. Louis off the ground. A bit far fetched, but he’s not exactly propelling himself indefinitely in the sky with this thing. It’s likely that, moments after we see Hiroki and Kyuusuke flying off into the horizon, they would quickly lose altitude and crash very hard, perhaps into a the side of a building or into a busy street, destroying the St. Louis and breaking a few bones in the process. But this is a show about girls with super powers fighting monsters so maybe not.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 157 - The St. Louis flies

I did a bit of research to see if there were any real flying bicycles. One can find a lot of images of people on the ground with flying bikes, but none of them soaring through the skies. The video embedded below shows what such a device is like. It’s much more light weight than the St. Louis with a much larger wing span and manages to get airborne for only a few seconds. Still it is a bike and it flies, so the concept is not total nonsense. Don’t expect to be flying to and from work every day without some external power source though.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 154 - Minako in a ridiculous dress

This morning the two latest episodes of Sailor Moon SuperS, episodes 154 and 155, were added to Hulu and Neon Alley. This week we get a couple more funny episodes. First Minako and Makoto compete for the affections of a kindergarden teacher and then everyone is having trouble with the pommel horse.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 154 - Minako on stage

Episode 154, Clash of Dreams: Minako and Makoto’s Broken Friendship, seems like a bit of a repeat of a Sailor Moon R episode in which we similarly had Minako and Makoto fight with each other. It seems these two characters only interact for the purpose of ruining their friendship! The two of them have a crush on the same teacher, Honjou, who happens to have a class full of brats including the especially annoying young Kotarou. This particular kid gets on Minako’s nerves and in the ensuing chaos one of Makoto’s bears becomes destroyed, which causes a fracture in their friendship. Minako tries to win over the class with a nice concert where she dresses in the most ridiculous costume! After the teacher gets targeted and the fighting is done Minako repairs the damaged bear and bygones are bygones. Then comes the big shocker, Kotarou is Honjou’s son! This dashes Minako and Makoto’s dreams, as if they somehow would not have expected him to be unavailable if it weren’t for the fact that he had a child. This is odd as he may very well have been in a relationship if he didn’t have a child and there are plenty of single parents out there. Regardless, this settles the whole affair and there’s nothing more to fight about!

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 154 - Honjou and Kotarou

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 155 - Kyuusuke hates the Pommel Horse

Episode 155, Overcome Your Fear: the Jump to Freedom, shows us the evils of the pommel horse. Are these things that popular in Japan? Judging by Anime I feel as if this is a dreaded thing in the formative years of all Japanese children, where they are forced to jump over a pommel horse or they will fail phys ed and be held back a year. I similar recall an episode of Pretty Sammy which centred around a pommel horse. In this episode there are not one but two characters who are afraid of the pommel horse! First Chibiusa tries to duck out of school event due to her fear of the thing, possibly because in the 30th century they are still subjecting Japanese children to it, and then we learn that Kyuusuke is also afraid of it, a fear which goes back to childhood. The solution to both aversions to the pommel horse? Keep trying until you stop running into it! This is nonsense for a number of reasons. We must break down how this thing works. To jump over it you jump up and try to clear it, pushing yourself up with your hands while going over. Failing to clear it will mean either having the top of it hit your stomach or groin, or if you clear the front you will just land over it. For whatever reason all characters in this episode are seen failing to clear it by slamming right into it as if it was a wall. There is no in between where they almost clear it, just smashing into it. Beyond this no proper technique of progression used to surmount this problem. This is clearly a modular pommel horse which could be set to a lower height. This is how problems such as this should be approached! If the pommel horse is too daunting a task one should simply try it at a lower height and then raise it once comfortable! This is not the approach that Kyuusuke uses however, as JunJun of the Amazoness Quartet helps him get over his fear. This has to come down to fear of course. The pommel horse is not vanquished with hard work and training, but by overcoming an irrational fear of the pommel horse brought on by a traumatic experience. Anyway, Chibiusa pommel horses the Lemures and Kyuusuke manages to jump over the pommel horse as well. Hooray!

Sailor Moon R The Movie on Netflix Japan

While a lot of Sailor Moon episodes have been released on Hulu and Blu-Ray recently we still haven’t had any recent releases of the Sailor Moon movies in North America. Now you can watch my favourite of the films, Sailor Moon R The Movie, on Netflix Japan. I know what you’re saying! “Adam, you moron, if I lived in Japan I wouldn’t have this problem”. It’s easy enough to browse Netflix with services which disguise your country of origin. I personally use Unblock-Us to do this. That is a pay service but is a good way to access Netflix from any device using DNS. There are many similar such pay services as well as free option. In the past I mentioned Hola.org for browsing Hulu from Canada and I’ve been able to use that to access Netflix Japan as well. Check out this article for other suggestions for options which might work for you. All that said, the movie is in Japanese with no subtitles.

Sailor Moon R The Movie on Netflix Japan - Endymion and Serenity

For now only the first movie is available with no indication as to whether or not Sailor Moon S The Movie, Sailor Moon SuperS The Movie or any of the TV series will be made available in the future. The quality is decent and seems to come from the Japanese DVD release. This is a wide screen copy of the movie as the North American release from back in the day was presented in unmated full screen. I’ve included a few screenshots for reference. Needless to say you’ll need a Netflix account to watch this.

Sailor Moon R The Movie on Netflix Japan - Fiore, Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask

Sailor Moon R The Movie follows the story of Fiore, a young man who has a strong friendship with Mamoru which borders on romantic. He is enchanted by the evil Kissenian Flower which threatens the Earth leading the Sailor Guardians to fight on a massive flower covered asteroid! It takes place during the Sailor Moon R season, though it’s hard to situate in continuity.

Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 152 and 153 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 152 - Nanako and Rei

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon SuperS were added to Hulu and Neon Alley this morning. This week we get a couple of hilarious episodes with episodes 152 and 153. First Rei has an admirer who wants to be just like her and then Usagi and Chibiusa get cavities as a fake dentist pops up in town.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 152 - Nanako Baba

Episode 152, Flames of Passion: Mars’s Raging Super Attack, is the one where Sailor Mars powers up sort of. Rei is on the cover of Boys’ Press magazine, which is better than the last time someone from the Hikawa Shrine was in a magazine, that being the warning that her grandfather was harassing girls. Boys from all over are dropping by to get a look at this beautiful Shrine Maiden, generating good business. Nanako, a young girl who idolizes Rei, takes up a part time job at the shrine and goes so far as to wear a black wig to look just like her. Nanako is a strange girl with actual stars in her eyes, something that occasionally happens to characters in the series but not in a permanent way. Rei has a bunch of dreams, which basically lead to international success, but she doesn’t think Nanako’s dream is legit as it’s just wanting to be like someone else, but when Nanako overhears this she’s heartbroken. VesVes doesn’t think her dream is too shabby though as she’s targeting her in this episode, which leads to a humorous monster ManeMane Musume who imitates the Sailor Guardians all while suggestively shaking her butt. Finally Sailor Mars uses her Mars Flame Sniper for the first time, continuing the trend of Sailor Guardians powering up since getting their Super transformations. Nanako has moved on from emulating Rei and now works at a McDonalds’ style restaurant and even makes it to the cover of the ever popular Boys’ Press magazine. How often does this thing come out?

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 152 - Manemane Musume imitates Sailor Mars

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 153 - Chibiusa and Usagi get cavities

Episode 153, Dentist of Horrors? Palla-Palla’s House, is all about cavities. We see a time stamped summary of an average night for Usagi and Chibiusa. This seems to involve a lot of eating sweets and not brushing their teeth. The excuse for not brushing is that it will remove the sweet taste from their mouth. Is this a real thing? I have quite a sweet tooth, and the cavities to back it up, but I’ve never delayed brushing because it felt better to keep sugar in my mouth. Chibiusa seems to go to bed at 10:51pm, which seems a bit late. The next morning Usagi and Chibiusa have cavities! They are afraid of the awful Juuban dentist but that’s okay because there is a new dentist in town! The dentist is actually made by PallaPalla who made the building, dentist and dental assistant out of dolls. She ripped the head off of the woman and so she wears a scarf! So weird. During the fight Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon use the Supersonic Waves attack, one we have not seen since the first episode, in which loud screaming is amplified to cause disaster. It turns out this was all a plot and most of the children who are going to this new dentist have fake cavities, but Usagi and Chibiusa’s cavities are real. Oops! Now they have to go to that creepy dentist.

Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 150 and 151 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 150 - The Amazoness Quartet in civilian form

This week on Sailor Moon SuperS we are introduced to the Amazoness Quartet as episodes 150 and 151 are added to Hulu and Neon Alley. First the Dead Moon Circus, which arrived in town over 20 episodes ago, arrives in town? and then Ami has an Internet romance with a young musician.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 150 - CereCere attacks Ziriconia

Episode 150, The Amazoness: Nightmare from Behind the Mirrors, introduces us to the Amazoness Quartet. Last week I mentioned that not much had happened this season and this episode reminds us of that. There is a circus in town! The Dead Moon Circus. That damned tent showed up out of nowhere during the eclipse in episode 128 and we’re only now getting around to addressing it? Nehelenia, this season’s main villain, is seen only briefly in a mirror at the beginning of this episode. Better late than never! I am kind of joking when I say that nothing has happened yet this season, but the Korean dub actually skipped everything up to this episode and just had to insert something about the Super transformations into the fight to make it all make sense. Anyway, the Amazoness Quartet are kind of cool. CereCere, VesVes, JunJun and PallaPalla are terribly behaved young girls. They not only argue with Zirconia but CereCere tries to actually fight her, which only ends because Zirconia turns out to be more powerful. As villains they are less objectionable than sleazy pick up artists and seem to fit with the whole circus theme more as they do acrobatics. The target this week is Momoko. Again. But there isn’t much focus on her as she just sort of tags along with the gang to go to the circus. The Amazoness Quartet aren’t quite as invasive in getting the Mirror of Dreams from their targets as they do so by knocking a pool ball into them, usually after doing some sort of elaborate trick shot. The episode closes with the Amazoness Quartet getting massaged which is a testament to their slacker attitudes.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 150 - The Amazoness Quartet getting massaged

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 151 - Ami naked

Episode 151, True Power Explodes: Ami’s Melody of the Heart, is the episode where we see Ami naked. Ami was chilling on the Internet before it was cool! Remember that this episode was released nearly 20 years ago, in November of 1995. The Internet wasn’t what it is today back then. Ami is downloading music on a computer network almost 4 years before Napster! She downloaded some music by user N. T. and is so into him that she’s writing poetry inspired by his music. Ami meets up with N. T. who is actually Toshiyuki Nishino, a young piano player who, much to Ami’s disappointment, has a girlfriend named Kyouko! Note that the initials N. T. apply because in Japanese the family name comes before the given name when stated, so he would be Nishino Toshiyuki. Then we get into this whole Ami powering up to Sailor Mercury thing. During the fight we cut to a scene with a fully naked Ami which should make some fans happy. She talks to Sailor Mercury, which is odd since Ami and Sailor Mercury are never before shown as being different people, and this causes her to do some kind of awakening. Why are we doing this? Pegasus powered everyone up a bunch of episodes ago. Now we are making every character do some sort of episode centred on them so that they can embrace their new powers. Another sign that we could have completely skipped the first half of the season and just started with episode 150 and using these sort of special episodes as reasons to power everyone up one at a time. Perhaps Ami just talks to herself because she has no family, as we learn briefly about her dead beat father who isn’t around and sends her a painting.

Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 148 and 149 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 148 - Usagi offers Fish Eye an umbrella

This week on Hulu‘s new episodes of Sailor Moon SuperS we get my favourite episodes of the season. Many consider Sailor Moon SuperS to be fairly weak as Sailor Moon seasons go, with a heavy focus on Chibiusa and episodes which don’t contribute much to the overall story. Episodes 148 and 149 are an exception to this. If you’ve for whatever reason skipped all of Sailor Moon SuperS up to now you can safely just start watching here and not miss much. Let me catch you up! There’s a horse named Pegasus that has been talking with Chibiusa which the bad guys are looking for. The girls now have little things on their shoulders which don’t do anything. These three gloriously dressed guys are pick up artists and villains. Okay you’re all caught up.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 148 - Fish Eye kissing Mamoru

Episode 148, Shadow of Evil: the Trio’s Last Chance, is the first in a sort of two parter. In this episode Fish Eye targets Mamoru but things don’t quite go as they have in other episodes. The usual formula has one of the Amazon Trio target someone and then, without any real emotional connection, try to pick them up an then take a peak at their Mirror of Dreams. Fish Eye, like Neil Strauss when he met Lisa Leveridge, has actual feelings for Mamoru and this sets him on a path of self realization. When he really makes a go at Mamoru he is rejected and Mamoru gives as a reason that he doesn’t have any dream. Fish Eye then realizes that while they’ve been looking for Pegasus in all of these people’s dreams, they didn’t have any of their own! He attempts to summon a Mirror of Dreams from Tiger’s Eye and then sees what he feared, that they don’t actually have any! Fish Eye is upset and has a peak at Mamoru’s Mirror of Dreams, which leads Sailor Moon to show up and save the day. Defeated emotionally, he sits crying on a bench and Usagi comes to his side to help him out, showing Sailor Moon’s true strength.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 149 - Usagi without a mirror of dreams

Episode 149, Mirrors of Dreams: the Amazon’s Last Stage, is the last we’ll see of the Amazon Trio. Fish Eye is heartbroken from Mamoru’s rejection, but Usagi is being compassionate towards him. While the Usagi we usually see in the series, even in the last episode, is one of extreme jealousy, here she presents a very different side. She has pity for Fish Eye who she knows doesn’t have a chance with Mamoru. While having this really awkward sleepover type situation with Usagi, he overhears Chibiusa talking with Pegasus and realizes that he has been hiding in her dreams all along. Hawk’s Eye targets Usagi and there is just no dressing up this episode’s attempted seduction. He walks in and just snaps his fingers to make her mirror appear. Does he not try for anyone under the age of majority? This makes us wonder why these guys have even bothered with the whole romance charade for the past 20 episodes. It’s obvious that it’s completely unnecessary! In the ensuing battle Usagi’s Mirror of Dreams is destroyed, which is sort of like having her soul destroyed, and then Hawk’s Eye is killed. Fish Eye and Tiger’s Eye finally have a change of heart and know that they need to save Usagi and Chibiusa, who Fish Eye kidnapped, to stop the monster and get their revenge. And they do, sacrificing their own lives in the process. Next it is revealed what the Amazon Trio really are. Hawk’s Eye is a hawk, Tiger’s Eye is a tiger and Fish Eye is a fish. A Mirror of Dreams is like a soul and these three don’t appear to have any. The insinuation would be that animals don’t actually have souls. Bad news for Luna, Artemis and Diana! Surely they could be exempt from this but what of other animals in the series such as Rhett Butler or the Chanelas? They must not have souls either.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 149 - Hawk's Eye the Hawk, Tiger's Eye the Tiger, Fish Eye the Fish

The Amazon Trio have truly redeemed themselves in their final moments. This is like the story of Pinocchio trying to become a real boy. Pegasus rewards them by giving them Dream Mirrors of their own, and then takes them with him to Elysion. Are they actually alive at this point or do they simply have their souls brought into the afterlife? Regardless of the details they are not seen again, but it seems that they are finally at peace.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 149 - The Amazon Trio with Mirrors of Dreams

Throughout both of these episodes we see a shadowy outline of the Amazoness Quartet. We will be seeing them more in the next half of the season as they are the villains to replace the Amazon Trio.

Sailor Moon Crystal’s English dub is coming to Hulu in November and Blu-Ray in 2016 plus the English voices for the Witches 5 have been announced

Sailor Moon Crystal English dub coming in November

This past weekend Viz Media held their Sailor Moon Panel at New York Comic Con. We got a lot of news about Sailor Moon Crystal. First and most importantly, the dub of Sailor Moon Crystal will be coming to Hulu and Viz.com next month, some time in November. We previously learned that the dub cast would be the same cast which was used for Viz’s new dub of the original Sailor Moon anime.

Sailor Moon Crystal English Blu-Ray 2016

We have also learned, via a flyer of their upcoming releases, that Sailor Moon Crystal would be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in 2016. The first release is “Sailor Moon Crystal Set 1: The Dark Kingdom Arc” and will include Sailor Moon Crystal Acts 1 to 13. This Blu-Ray set will no doubt include the original Japanese and English dubbed versions of Sailor Moon Crystal, including optional subtitles. We’ve previously learned that Viz’s version of Sailor Moon Crystal will be the updated version used for the Japanese Blu-Ray releases, which had minor changes to the animation from the original streaming version.

Viz English dub of Sailor Moon voice cast for the Witches 5

In casting news we have also learned the voice actors who will be playing the Witches 5, who are 6 of the new villains from the upcoming dub of Sailor Moon S. Now that the Infinity story arc of Sailor Moon Crystal has been announced in Japan, it stands to reason that this same cast will be around to voice these characters once those episodes are dubbed into English. The new cast includes some returning actors who have done other voices in the series. Erin Fitzgerald will voice Eudial. Kira Buckland will voice Mimete. Laura Post, who previously voiced a kindergarden teacher in Sailor Moon R episode 52 and the monster Amaderasu in episode 53, will voice Tellu. Cricket Brown, who previously voiced Usagi’s teacher Haruna, will play Viluy. Johanna Luis, who previously voiced An the Alien also known as Natsumi in Sailor Moon R, will play both Cyprine and Ptilol who somehow count as one of the Witches 5.

Sailor Moon SuperS episodes 146 and 147 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 146 - Princess Ribuna

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon SuperS have been added to Hulu and Neon Alley. With episodes 146 and 147 we are almost done with the Amazon Trio as we have an episode right out of a sitcom plot followed by a tragic heartbreak for Makoto.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 146 - Kid wants balloon

Episode 146, Juban Holiday: The Carefree Princess, feels like an episode of Family Ties. This plot has been done time and time again. There’s a princess who is tired of a great life of luxury so she sneaks off for a day of innocent fun! Princess Rubina, in this case, crosses paths with Usagi and Chibiusa. She is completely ignorant about the normal world, thinking it fit to tell men to carry the bags of strangers or to steal balloons! In one particularly humorous scene we see a balloon salesman pressuring a kid into having a fit to try to get his mother to buy him a balloon. This seems to fail until Princess Rubina takes it upon herself to free the balloons from the vendor. This doesn’t go so well when payment is expected and ultimately somehow Hawk’s Eye is saddled with the bill. This method of simply asking the next closest person for payment reminds me of the parking lot attendant in Strange Brew (starring Jill Frappier) asking anyone for “six fifty”. Ultimately Rubina is targeted by Hawk’s Eye which leads to a hilarious Lemures who appears to be an elephant but turns out to be the ball, Elephanko.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 146 - Princess Ribuna hiding

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 147 - Makoto and Tiger's Eye dancing

Episode 147, Destined Partners? Makoto’s Innocence, continues Makoto’s tragic relationship drama. There’s a dance party and Makoto loves to dance, but doesn’t seem to get much action because in this universe guys don’t want to approach beautiful women because they’re too tall? This leads Ami and Makoto to dance together, so of course we need to ship these two. Ultimately Tiger’s Eye shows up and he has a plan to get all of the girls, because at this point we’re doing mass pick ups instead of just one at a time, and so he dances with Makoto to lure them all in. Makoto, who gets attached far too easily, imagines them dancing in white which I can only assume signifies a wedding. When she asks for one more dance Tiger’s Eye says he’ll be back later, and proceeds to dance with every girl there before just leaving. Makoto is determined to stick around and stays there all night, waiting for a man who would not come in the rain. This reminds me of Makoto’s first episode of the live action Sailor Moon series in which she is tricked into waiting for a boy who she has a crush on and ends up waiting for a long period of time in the rain before realizing it. Since this scene is not in the manga and the live action series came much later than the anime, it is possible that this episode served as some inspiration for that. It could also be a coincidence, since Jupiter’s thunder powers are inevitably related to the rain. Fish Eye shows up, because he won a sort of beauty contest, and brings Tiger’s Eye a polaroid of Makoto. In a first Fish Eye is the one to trap Makoto and call forth her Mirror of Dreams while Tiger’s Eye is the one to put his head into it.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 144 - The girls at the beach

This week on Sailor Moon SuperS we get a couple of funny episodes that are all about romance. With this morning’s addition of episodes 144 and 145 to Hulu and Neon Alley we get Shingo’s final appearance as a pimp who falls in love with Ami and then it’s all about fat shaming Usagi as she tries to be a ballerina.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 144 - Shingo the pimp

Episode 144, Shining Summer Days: Ami Under the Sea-Breeze, ships Ami and Shingo. Isn’t Shingo great? Wasn’t it fun when they shipped him with his sister in the first season? We’ve come a long way since then as Shingo is now going after Ami! This is sadly the last time we see Shingo in the series. He was a fairly prominent character in the first season, having a smaller role in Sailor Moon R and since being seen only very occasionally. This is a good final episode for him with some great moments, such as where he pretends to be a pimp in order to discourage gentlemen callers from hitting on Usagi and her friends at the beach. When Ami shows up Shingo suddenly gets excited and needs to run off. Why is this? Perhaps he, in nothing but his bathing suit, feels that there is a level of excitement that he can’t quite hide. Tiger’s Eye tries to hit on Ami and as usual doesn’t do so well. He takes it quite poorly when Shingo seems to be the one getting in his way. He tries to drown him, expecting Ami to simply ignore him, but that doesn’t work and we get an excuse for a little Ami and Shingo mouth to mouth. This is yet another swimsuit episode. We seem to get about one a season so this is what we have for SuperS! One interesting relationship in this episode is Shingo and Chibiusa. Shingo doesn’t know that Chibiusa is his niece. Presumably he doesn’t die in the next 6 or so years and will actually properly get to be her uncle. He believes her to be his cousin but treats her more like a sister as they are living together. All around this episode is good for some laughs. Shingo was always a great character and it’s too bad we won’t be seeing him anymore.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 145 - Usagi and Chibiusa do ballet

Episode 145, Become a Prima: Usagi’s Ballet, has Usagi and her friends trying out ballet. The centres around a performance of the ballet Giselle. The target is a ballet teacher Yamagishi and his Prima Ballerina Kiriko who inexplicably looks a lot like Naru. He wants her to be Giselle but thinks she is missing something. Enter Fish Eye, in drag once again because Yamagishi is straight, blowing everyone away with his ballet moves. It seems like Yamagishi has picked him to be Giselle but it turns out this was more of a weird semi cruel motivational tool to get the most out of Kiriko. A recurring theme in this episode is fat shaming Usagi, who is ridiculously skinny. It’s like the way Usagi is animated doesn’t match the way she is actually supposed to look in the narrative in the show. Or perhaps it’s just logistics that in a show where everyone is equally skinny no one is actually skinny since it’s the new normal. Either way, Usagi has little bits of fat which do a sort of muffin top thing over a tutu whenever she wears one. Chibiusa teases her about this at first which is funny because as Usagi’s daughter she has already made changes to her waistline in the future. Later in the episode the monster puts a Tutu on the two of them and the waistline problem is pointed out again. Mamoru even notices the weight gain as he’s accused of being too slow to save them. There’s just nothing good about any of this. It’s a negative attitude that tells viewers that they need to be really skinny and I just don’t like it.
