FUNimation does not hold the license for Sailor Moon

FUNimation logo

Yesterday we shared a video from Anime North 2013 where John Stocker mentioned that he had heard that FUNimation was going to be doing the dub for the new Sailor Moon anime. Some clarification has now come from the FUNimation Facebook page stating simply that “FUNimation does not hold the license for Sailor Moon.”.

This is pretty straightforward. Whether or not some future deal has FUNimation doing the dub for the new anime is something we can only speculate about. As of now they simply do not hold the rights. There is not currently any indication of anyone holding the rights to the Sailor Moon anime, old or new, in North America. Should we get any reliable information to the contrary we will be sure to let you know about it.

We regret having shared a rumour that did not turn out to be correct but as always we attempt to present such information in it’s full context so that you the reader can make your own informed decision as to whether or not to believe such claims. If there is ever any evidence that is contrary to something that is posted on this site please do not hesitate to contact us and let us know about it so that we can post corrections when necessary in our ongoing effort to keep you informed about all things Sailor Moon.

Luduc interviews Terri Hawkes at G-Anime

Luduc versus le doublage - Interview with Terri Hawkes at G-Anime 2013

Here’s a video “Luduc versus le doublage” (Luduc vs. Dubbing) recorded at G-Anime 2013 in Gatineau which includes an interview with Terri Hawkes, the voice of Sailor Moon from the English dub of the Sailor Moon anime. This video is primarily in French but the portions with Terri Hawkes, which includes Sailor Moon saying lines from famous movies, are in English.

Mixed in with this are two French interviews, one with Olivier Visentin, an actor who dubs French voices for English movies such as the voice of Jonah Hill’s characters and the other with Jackie Berger who is best known as the voice of Estaban from the French dub of “Les Mystérieuses Cités d’or” or “The Mysterious Cities of Gold”, an anime show that was quite popular amongst French Canadians.

Check out Luduc’s YouTube channel for more of his convention videos.

Readers may recognize the room these interviews are done in from our interview with Terri Hawkes at the same convention.

The Anime North schedule is now online on their web site and we’ve combed through it to pick out all the relevant information related to Sailor Moon!

Stephanie Morgenstern to appear at Unplugged Expo in Toronto this October

Mina - Sailor Venus

Stephanie Morgenstern, the voice of Sailor Venus from the English dub of the Sailor Moon anime, will be the guest of honour at the Unplugged Expo October 26th & 27th in downtown Toronto. Watch this video featuring Stephanie Morgenstern for the full announcement:

The video teases “Wouldn’t it be great if we could get all the Sailor Scouts in one place at the same time?”. That certainly sounds like A Weekend of Awesome. We certainly hope more voice actors will be able to join this convention. We’ll let you know of any new developments as we learn about them.

Check out the Unplugged Expo official site and Facebook page to stay up to date on new updates.

Sailor Moon animation director Kazuko Tadano confirms a delay of the new anime series in an interview at Cartoonist 2013

Kazuko Tadano from the Sailor Moon anime

Kazuko Tadano, animation director and character designer for the original Sailor Moon series, confirmed in an Italian interview at the Cartoonist 2013 convention in Nice, France that the new Sailor Moon anime series would be delayed, potentially up to December. While Kazuko Tadano will not be working on the new anime series she stated that nothing was in the works, that there will be a large delay and that it will probably be ready in December. While this is once again not an official announcement of a delay this adds to a mountain of evidence that has already suggested a delay is happening. It should also be considered that since Kazuko Tadano is not associated with the show this isn’t first hand information but likely something she’s heard from someone else in the industry. We can’t make any definitive conclusions about the idea that the delay could be until the end of the year, though this does match up with the winter 2014 estimate that was given by a European distributor for Toei a few weeks ago.

Beyond this news she also discussed her work on Sailor Moon. When asked about leaving the series after two seasons of doing character designs and animation direction she mentioned that it was difficult to work with Toei and that she wanted to work on other projects. She also talked about Ail and An, the two aliens from Sailor Moon R, and how they were original characters of her own creation.

Katie Griffin and Susan Roman to appear at Anime North May 24th to the 26th

Sailor Jupiter - Susan Roman

Anime North has announced two new guests Katie Griffin, the voice of Sailor Mars, and Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter. They will join Linda Ballantyne, the voice of Sailor Moon, and John Stocker, voice director for Sailor Moon, at this year’s convention which will be held in Toronto the weekend of May 24th to the 26th.

Susan Roman is a veteran voice actor with a ton of credits to her name. She provided the voice of Lita, Sailor Jupiter, for her entire time in the series making her the only actress to voice one of the main Sailor Scout for the entire length of the series.

Sailor Mars - Katie Griffin

Katie Griffin has also done a great deal of voice acting. We met up with her at Fan Expo last year. Check out that interview. She provided the voice of Raye, Sailor Mars, for all but 16 episodes of the series making the actress appearing in the most episodes of the show.

With all of these Sailor Moon actors at the same convention we will be in attendance and hope to see you there. Weekend passes are sold out but individual passes are still available for all days.

Sailor Moon DVDs to be released in German and French

Sailor Moon French Intro

Earlier this week Toei Animation announced that it made a deal with Viz Media Europe for the release of the Sailor Moon anime in German and French language DVDs. The entire 200 episode TV series will be released by Viz Media Switzerland in German DVDs which will have both German dialogue as well as the original Japanese dialogue with German subtitles. The French release will be handled by Kazé who will be releasing the entire first season of Sailor Moon on bilingual DVDs featuring the French dub as well as the original Japanese with French subtitles.

German and French speaking fans may want to think about picking up these releases as there are still no English dubbed or subbed DVDs currently in print.

Below you will find a few samples of the French language dub. Keep in mind that I recorded these from VHS taped versions of a TV broadcast from the 90s so these clips should not be taken as an indication of the video quality of these upcoming releases.

Original Sailor Moon anime to replay in Japan starting May 5th

Sailor Moon episode 1 - Usagi removing a bandage from Luna's head

Japanese satellite channel TV Asahi channel 1 will begin replaying the first season of the 1992 Sailor Moon anime starting on the 5th of May. This is not a free channel so the show will not be viewable by everyone. The TV Asahi web site mentions that the show will be airing from 5 to 6pm on Sundays, meaning that they will be playing two episode per week in this time slot. The site only mentions the original 46 episode, having run from March 7th 1992 to March 23rd 1993, so there is currently no indication of specific plans to follow this airing up with Sailor Moon R. Replaying this first season will take roughly six months at this rate.

Fans have been waiting for more information about the new 2013 Sailor Moon anime but such information has still not come. Is TV Asahi trying to capitalize on the impending hype for the new series? Unfortunately we can’t consider this move as an indication of much since Sailor Moon has been replayed in Japan a number of times since it’s original airing back in the day.

Keiko Han and Yuko Minaguchi, the voices of Luna and Sailor Saturn, to appear at Animazement in May

Keiko Han, the voice of Luna in Sailor Moon

Keiko Han, the voice of Luna the cat from the Sailor Moon anime and live action series, and Yuko Minaguchi, the voice of Sailor Saturn from the anime, will be making appearance at the Animazement anime convention in North Caroline May 24th to the 26th.

Yuko Minaguchi, the voice of Sailor Saturn

Both of these Japanese voice actors have a ton of anime credits to their name and will surely have a very interesting perspective on the voice acting world in Japan and their roles in Sailor Moon. Though the schedule is not determined yet Animazement generally have guest panels and autograph signings. Check out Animazement’s guest page to see if any other of you favourite Japanese voice actors will be in appearance.

Momoiro Clover Z reenact the Sailor Moon S opening

Momoiro Clover Z - Sailor Moon S intro - Sailor Team

Unfortunately today’s appearance of Momoiro Clover Z on Japanese TV show Bakusho Show Battle did not have them performing the theme song to the new Sailor Moon 2013 anime as we previously reported. This was not an April fool’s joke but rather a misunderstood translation of the Japanese announcement. Apologies if we got your hopes up.

What we did get is a shot for shot remake of the opening of the Sailor Moon S season of the anime in which Momoiro Clover Z sing Moonlight Densetsu. You can watch the full clip below, assuming this clip does not get pulled as others have. You can compare their version to the actual Sailor Moon S opening being shown on the lower right corner of the screen.

Bakusho Show Battle is a Japanese TV show in which bands square off against each other doing a parody of a popular intro. You can find out more about this episode from Yahoo! Japan’s episode guide.
