Sailor Moon R episodes 69 and 70 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon R episode 69 - Usagi sees Mamoru with Unazuki

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon R are now available on Hulu and Neon Alley. This week we get episodes 69 and 70, both of which deal with unhealthy relationships and how not to treat your partner!

Sailor Moon R episode 69 - Luna jumping on Mamoru's penis

Episode 69, Awaken the Sleeping Beauty: Mamoru’s Distress, gives us a better look at what’s been keeping Mamoru and Usagi apart. We once again see a flash forward to Usagi and Mamoru’s wedding but this time we see what has Mamoru concerned. It’s actually a prediction of doom! Dump her or she’ll die, basically. A tough situation. What’s a good guy to do? Sort of forced conflict which if there’s a good reason for it, makes a lot of sense, but we’ll learn later on just how stupid the reasons really are. So Mamoru knows just how to make Usagi know it’s over, that’s to make her think he’s with another girl! Enter Motoki’s younger sister Unazuki. When Usagi sees them on a bike together she is pissed, which sends her into an eating binge. This is some pretty real stuff, dealing with your problems by crying into an open fridge. The monster, who by chance comes along at the right time in Usagi’s life, plunges her into a dream where she is all chibi. Luna, who is all over it, figures that Mamoru’s kiss might get her out of this for some reason, as she can tell that Usagi is upset about something he’s done. She then jumps into his apartment and jumps onto his penis to wake him up (animated gif included below). He kisses her, she’s fine, everyone’s happy. Well not really at all. Mamoru and Usagi are still split up until further notice, so that’s kind of crappy.

Sailor Moon R episode 70 - Koan attacking Rei and Yuuichirou

Episode 70, Battle of the Flames of Love! Mars vs. Koan, covers two abusive relationships. The first is Koan and the horrible Rubeus. He’s completely terrible to Koan, threatening her and ultimately tossing her life away as if it were nothing. Rubeus isn’t terrible because he’s evil and wants to destroy Crystal Tokyo. It’s because of the way he treats women. This is very real horrible behaviour that is a real problem in our society, not some fantastical caricature of what a bad person might be. The other abusive relationship is Rei and Yuuichirou! At the beginning of the episode he’s carrying around her bags like a lap dog. She generally mistreats him for most of the episode, and it’s played up as a bit of a joke. It’s funny but this is kind of terrible. Rei isn’t all bad in this episode, as her behaviour with Koan shows the real strength of the show. Koan is trying to do evil at the Hikawa Shrine, again. It’s a Crystal Point after all. When the fighting starts Rei realizes that there’s good in Koan, and while the Sailor Guardians are attacking her she comes to her defense, putting herself in harm’s way to protect her, getting hit by Sailor Jupiter’s knee. Ultimately when Koan had all but given up and was ready to give her own life and killing her off seemed like an easy option, Sailor Mars wouldn’t have it. The real strength of Sailor Moon and it’s characters is not in their ability to harm someone, but in their compassion and willingness to help even an enemy. Koan is then healed by Sailor Moon’s crystal and is able to return to a normal life, all thanks to Rei. Similar transformations will be seen with the rest of the Ayakashi sisters in the coming episodes, but Rei really set the precedent for this behaviour. With all this considered, we can forgive her mistreatment of Yuuichirou.

Sailor Moon R episode 70 - Zoisite's final appearance

There are a couple of odd references in this episode. This is actually the final appearance of Zoisite, who actually died back in episode 35. He is seen in a single frame of animation as Koan snatches her bag back from Yuuichirou. Later at Rei’s, Usagi is seen reading reading what looks a lot like a Run Run magazine featuring Sailor V and Artemis on the cover. This isn’t that odd since it’s well established that Sailor V is an anime, manga and video game in the Sailor Moon universe, but seeing a real world manga in the anime is a bit weird.

Sailor Moon R episodes 67 and 68 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon R episode 67 - Rei, Chibiusa, Ami, Makoto, Minako and Usagi playing beach volleyball in swimsuits

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon R are now available on Hulu and Neon Alley. This week we get an episode which was previously unreleased in North America. Episode 67 was never dubbed and was omitted from ADV’s terrible subbed only release.

Sailor Moon R episode 67 - Chibiusa riding Kirin

Episode 67, The Beach, the Island and a Vacation: The Guardian’s Break, was not part of the original English dub of Sailor Moon. Why it was skipped it not terribly clear but it shares a lot in common with episode 20, The Summer, the Beach, Youth and Ghosts, which was also not original dubbed. Both episodes have no actual monster and are beach episode. One reason for which this episode may have been skipped it that, not involving the main villains for the ongoing arc, it did not have any implications to the ongoing story so nothing is really missed. It’s also possible that it was skipped due to the swimsuit content being considered too racy for a young audience, even though these tame one piece suits were not terribly scandalous. This episode was also not included in the ADV’s subbed only release and the reason given for this was a lack of source material as they were acquired from DiC.

Sailor Moon R episode 67 - Ami, Rei, Usagi, Minako, Makoto, Artemis, Luna and Chibiusa on a boat

This episode has the gang intruding on Rei’s training to go on vacation. Chibiusa quickly becomes annoyed at the group because she doesn’t want to eat fish. She gets lost at sea and befriends a Plesiosaur named Kirin. Plesiosaurs have been extinct for about 65 million years but hey Chibiusa isn’t born yet so that’s no big deal. There are no Droids to fight in this episode. Instead the main threat is a volcano! Also included is an impromptu game of extreme beach volleyball.

Sailor Moon R episode 68 - Mamoru and Usagi's wedding

Episode 68, Protect Chibi-Usa: Clash of the Ten Warriors, gives us a lot of looks at the future of Crystal Tokyo. We get to see Neo Queen Serenity in the future as well as a look at the rest of the Sailor Guardians, the city of Crystal Tokyo and a young Chibiusa. We also get a look at Usagi and Mamoru’s wedding which takes place at an undetermined time, likely prior to the birth of Chibiusa and the scenes of Crystal Tokyo seen in this episode. As with a number of other episodes Chibiusa gets upset, this time due to wetting the bed, and then tries to go back to the future, freaks out, makes a light come out of her forehead, and gets the attention of the enemy. The ensuing fight is epic and pits the Ayakashi Sisters against the Sailor Guardians and Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask against Rebeus. This epic battle is all to the tune of the song Ai No Senshi, which is Japanese for Soldier of Love.

Sailor Moon R episodes 65 and 66 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon R episode 65 - Calaveras and Petz

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon R are now available on Hulu and Neon Alley. This week for episodes 65 and 66 we have the Sailor Guardians face off against Petz and Calaveras … twice.

Episode 65, Dispute Over Love: Minako and Makoto’s Conflict, has Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus sharing an episode! We recently saw Ami and Rei get their own episodes but I guess Makoto and Minako weren’t able to hold their own! Instead they fight with each other for a while, which is mimicked by Calaveras and Petz’s bickering and fighting in this same episode. Sailor Jupiter uses Sparkling Wide Pressure for the first time in the ensuing fight while Sailor Venus uses her Venus Love Me Chain for the first time. The Droid in this episode is made out of wine which is kind of cool!

Sailor Moon R episode 66 - Usagi, Chibiusa and Mamoru

Episode 66, Usagi’s Parental Love: the Curry Romance Triangle is all about making curry! We get a good look at the future version of Usagi and Mamoru in this episode. Normally when we see Crystal Tokyo in other episodes we see Neo Queen Serenity and King Endymion all decked out in their royal garb. Here we seem to be seeing them in civilian clothes, though those are fairly fancy clothes. Chibiusa thinks a lot about her parents as she gets close to Usagi and Mamoru. So right. Curry. Chibiusa needs to make curry for a school curry party. Is this a thing in Japan? In North America we do pot lucks but diversity is the key. Having a pot luck where everyone brings the same food is a bit of a waste of time. Whatever. Usagi, Chibiusa and Mamoru go to Juban Super, the supermarket in Azuba Juban, to get some meat. Too bad Calaveras and Petz took over the supermarket and turned all of the patrons into zombies! Unfortunately the zombies’ black skin makes it look a bit like all of the zombies are really just dark skinned minorities.

Sailor Moon R episode 66 - Dark Fruit turns people in to black zombies

Finally Chibiusa and Mamoru ditch Usagi and run into Rei. Rei reluctantly agrees to help them make curry, but ultimately Chibiusa decides to go back to Usagi. This makes us wonder what the Curry Romance Triangle mentioned in the title actually is. Is it Chibiusa/Mamoru/Usagi? This love triangle is always a problem and at the heart of the Sailor Moon R series, culminating in some rather incestual behaviour between Black Lady and Tuxedo Mask. The other love triangle here is the Usagi/Mamoru/Rei combo. Rei and Mamoru were a legitimate couple in the first season, something which ended abruptly when Mamoru was mortally wounded, regained memories of a past life and then was turned evil. The Moonlight Knight only recently gave Mamoru his memories of him and Rei’s relationship back at which point there was an assumed romance between him and Usagi, but the choice was never really presented to him. We can see Rei’s obvious hesitation at getting in the middle of existing relationships. Where does this hesitation come from? Does she not want to take Usagi’s place in her relationship with Chibiusa or is is that she’s worried she may rekindle some old feeling between herself and Mamoru? Luckily Mamoru is wearing the absolute worst shirt so there’s no risk of a hot girl like Rei falling for that!

Sailor Moon R episode 66 - Rei, Chibiusa and Mamoru

This is supposed to be one of those mosquito repellent things, right?

Next week is episode 67, The Beach, the Island and a Vacation: The Guardians’ Break, which was not previously dubbed into English or released in Viz’s subbed only set.

Sailor Moon R episodes 63 and 64 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon R episode 63 - Rei's lecherous grandpa

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon R are now available on Hulu and Neon Alley. This week we get episode 63 and 64 which has Sailor Mars getting a new attack and a little backstory for the mysterious Chibiusa.

Sailor Moon R episode 63 - Rei and her Grandpa fighting

Episode 63, Women Must Be Strong and Beautiful: Rei’s New Special Technique, is all about Rei and her lecherous grandfather. Rei’s grandpa is having martial arts classes at the Hikawa Shrine with Yuuichirou’s help. This has Rei all upset. The backstory of this is of course that Rei’s grandfather spends all of his time chasing young girls, including those he’s trying to attract to this class. Koan, along with the monster of the week, comes along to create further friction between Rei and her grandfather by suggesting the class focus more on combat. In the ensuing fight Sailor Mars uses her Burning Mandala attack for the first time.

Sailor Moon R episode 64 - Chibiusa crying

Episode 64, In Search of the Silver Crystal: Chibi-Usa’s Secret, gives us a bit more backstory on Chibiusa. Due to the Tsukino family being a bunch of dead beats, Chibiusa is stranded at school alone after all of the other kids are picked up. The ensuing thunder and lighting scares her greatly. Chibiusa uses Luna P to communicate with a mysterious figure from the future, who we will learn more about later. Unlike many not so well kept secrets of the show Pu’s true identity is not that obvious to those who don’t know where the story will lead. She gets sick of the 20th century and tries to use the Key to Space and time to go back to the future. This doesn’t work for whatever reason, possibly because it’s used indoors and the beam bounces but this is never clearly explained. This causes gravity to go wonky in the building. As luck would have it the Sailor Guardians happen to be in the same building and experience this weird anomaly as well. The girls are floating around and Rei ends up with her head up Minako’s skirt! Hilarity ensues.

Sailor Moon R episodes 61 and 62 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon R episode 61 - Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon R are now available on Hulu and Neon Alley. This week we have episodes 61 and 62 which continues the story of Chibiusa and the Black Moon Clan.

Sailor Moon R episode 61 - Usagi crying

Episode 61, Usagi Devastated: Mamoru Declares a Break-Up, is a pretty sad episode. Now that Usagi and Mamoru have finally had their moment of happiness they are quickly torn apart. Mamoru is behaving strangely and decides to break it off with Usagi. Usagi is naturally confused by this sudden change in attitude, but when she learns that he is serious about this she is heartbroken. As Usagi breaks down crying in a phone booth we can really get a feeling for her pain. The Black Moon Clan then try to make her forget her trouble with makeup, which naturally doesn’t work.

Sailor Moon R episode 62 - Ami, Chibiusa and Mamoru at the airport

Episode 61, A Guardian’s Friendship: Goodbye, Ami, has Ami leaving! When I first watched this episode back in the day I really had no idea how this series would play out so I didn’t know if Ami really would go or not! The episode also features new transformation items for the girls. Ami’s friends are not able to meet her at the airport because they’re busy fighting evil, but when she gets their gift and letter she realizes she can’t go. And how could she? Who would be able to just leave the country while evil is threatening the city and the world? Who would give up on such a sacred duty? Mamoru does! But that’s over 100 episodes away and it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Sailor Moon R episodes 59 and 60 are now on Hulu

Sailor Moon R episode 59 - Ail and An

This week’s new episodes of Sailor Moon R on Hulu and Neon Alley end one arc and start another. We see the last of Ail, An, the Makaiju and the Moonlight Knight in episode 59 and we see the introduction of Chibiusa and the Black Moon Clan in episode 60. As with every week these two new episodes are in Japanese with English subtitles by Viz.

Sailor Moon R episode 59 - Ail and An as children

Episode 59, True Love Awakens: The Makai Tree’s Secret, wraps up the story of the Ail and An. The seemingly evil tree has trashed a building and is attacking everything. It kills An, causing her and Ail to realise how much they love each other, but is then cut short of killing Ail too when it hears Sailor Moon’s call to stop. The Makaiju communicates and tells us it’s origin story. Ail and An were part of a species of aliens born from the tree on a distant planet. They are seen coming from the same pod, which means they are not only siblings but in a way twins. What a scandalous Luke and Leia twincest affair they have! The aliens fought for the tree but it turned out it was love that nourished it! What a hilarious misunderstanding that resulted in many deaths and injuries. We then learn the true identity of the Moonlight Knight. Who knew he was actually Mamoru? But wait… how are they always seen together? The Moonlight Knight is just a spirit born from Mamoru’s desire to protect Usagi despite his blocked memories. Sailor Moon heals the tree, leaving nothing but a little sprout. An is revived and her and Ail go off to live in the lonely depths of space. This concludes the Makaiju story arc. Fans have mixed feelings on these episodes but I always thought they were fantastic.

Sailor Moon R episode 59 - The Moonlight Knight is Mamoru

Sailor Moon R episode 60 - Chibiusa crashing Usagi and Mamoru's date

Episode 60, Angel or Devil? the Mysterious Girl from the Sky, introduces us to Chibiusa! Usagi and Mamoru are very briefly happy in this episode as they share their first consensual kiss! The only time they actually kissed in the first season was when Mamoru took advantage of an unconscious Sailor Moon who was unable to consent. Once their past lives were revealed Tuxedo Mask was injured and wisked away to be made evil. Since Usagi didn’t kiss his dead body and didn’t get any action while his memories were blocked, this is the first kiss they actually exchange. Not content to keep them together their happiness is soon thwarted by Chibiusa who literally falls from the sky kissing Mamoru. She then pulls a gun on Usagi in a hilarious scene. Chibiusa proceeds to brainwash everyone into thinking she’s Usagi’s cousin after which Usagi gets her revenge by spanking her. So what is this girl’s secret? Surely by now most people know the full story but unlike the secret identity of Princess Serenity or The Moonlight Knight, this one isn’t terribly obvious from the beginning. The Black Moon Clan also show up this week but they aren’t interesting for another few episodes.

Sailor Moon R episode 57 - Natsumi and Usagi in class

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon R, episode 57 and 58, were added to Hulu and Neon Alley this morning. This week we get a better look at Natsumi and Seijirou as we build up to the end of the Makaiju story arc. These episodes are in Japanese with English subtitles. If dubbed episodes are more up your alley be sure to check out episodes 25 through 36 which were added to Hulu’s Sailor Moon dubbed page for a limited time.

Sailor Moon R episode 57 - An gets a pencil in the nose

Episode 57, After-School Trouble: Usagi Is a Target, gives us a nice and funny look at the relationship between Natsumi and Usagi who are constantly fighting over Mamoru’s love. Both Usagi and Natsumi get in trouble in class and are punished by their unprofessional and spiteful teacher Haruna. She is upset after her date canceled on her and takes it out on her students. While the students are kept after school she receives a call, which is her date who is able to make plans again. Since this was 1993, the pre cell phone era, this call is taken in the office. She then forgets about her students and leaves! Usagi and Natsumi make a little bet over Mamoru, as if such a thing was binding, over who will finish their assignment first. Natsumi ends up with a pencil in the nose but then drains Usagi’s energy so it’s all even. Meanwhile we learn that Ail is not really capable of choosing a Cardian without An. His Cardian won’t listen to him, attacks a bunch of ducks and generally makes a mess for him. Ultimately Usagi and Natsumi get along quite well despite the injuries and we get to see a kinder side to Natsumi than we have in the past.

Sailor Moon R episode 58 - Sailor Moon stage show with Jadeite, Morga, Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask and Luna

Episode 58, Disconnecting Love: the Raging Makai Tree, is where things really start to come together. In this episode we see some interesting things. When Usagi, Umino and Naru go to a Sailor Moon show we can see Jadeite, Morga, Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask and Luna recreated in large headed costumes. I suppose it makes sense that the public would have this knowledge. Morga was present in a jewellery store full of shoppers in the first episode. Jadeite, despite his many convincing disguises, chose to appear as a large hologram over the city threatening to set it on fire in his final episode. Usagi and her friends head over to visit Natsumi and Seijirou, which leads nosy Usagi to poke around in their secret room which is actually a massive open area housing the Makaiju, Ail and An’s evil energy sucking tree. Or is it? One wonders how many units in this apartment building were cleared out to make room for this humungous tree, or if this room is bigger on the inside like a bag of holding. After bringing back a piece of the tree and having Artemis nearly killed touching it, Usagi knows something is up and must confront Natsumi and Seijirou. She conveniently meets Mamoru on the way so they all have a nice time before Usagi is fed to the Cardian and tree, causing the Makaiju to freak out and wreck up the building. To be continued!

Next week is the epic conclusion to the Makaiju story arc as well as the first appearance of Chibiusa.

Viewers will need to view these directly on the Hulu or Neon Alley sites, which are not available in Canada and other areas. Building up to this event Viz has released a couple of new clips from the upcoming second half of season 1 featuring the voices of Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus who did not appears in previously released episodes.

Sailor Moon episode 25 - Makoto Kino

Here are a couple of clips of Sailor Jupiter from her first episode, Jupiter, the Powerful Girl in Love. In the first clip Makoto and Usagi talk over lunch for the first time and in the second we see her learning that she is Sailor Jupiter and her first transformation. Sailor Jupiter is voiced by Amanda Celine Miller.

Shortly before this clip was released Amanda Celine Miller joked on twitter that the inspiration for her Sailor Jupiter voice came from Harvey Firestein.

Sailor Moon episode 36 - Minako does Usagi's hair

Two clips of Minako were also released. The first features Minako trying to cheer up Usagi while doing her hair in episode 36, Usagi’s Confusion: Is Tuxedo Mask Evil?. The second clip shows the Princess Seminar from episode 37, Let’s Become a Princess: Usagi’s Bizarre Training, which is really not a Sailor Venus centric clip but in it she does her Crescent Beam attack. Sailor Venus is voiced by Cherami Leigh.

In that second clip we hear a grunt by the new voice of Artemis, Johnny Yong Bosch, whose voice will be heard for the first time during the new episode we’ll see tomorrow.

Sailor Moon episode 37 - Artemis is Luna's contact

Sailor Moon R episode 55 - Ami and Luna shield themselves as Usagi eats

The latest two episodes of Sailor Moon R are now available on Hulu and Neon Alley. As with every Monday, two new episodes in Japanese with English subtitles by Viz, were added to these streaming services. This week’s episodes, 55 and 56, are full of great comedic moments.

Sailor Moon R episode 55 - Makoto and Seijirou

Episode 55, Is Seijuro the Moonlight Knight? Mako On Fire, is all about food! There is a secondary plot where we investigate if Seijirou is the Moonlight Knight, but Sailor Mercury quickly determines that this is untrue. There are many food related plots going around. Usagi has no food, and goes from friend to friend trying to eat something. She finally ends up pigging out on some food in front of Ami and Luna. Makoto, in the meantime, is educating Seijirou about food. He’s new to food because he’s an alien and doesn’t need to eat anything but energy. This of course makes Natsumi very jealous which prompts a fight with a monster.

Sailor Moon R episode 56 - Rei is jealous of Makoto's breasts

Episode 56, Steal a Kiss from Mamoru! An’s Project Snow White, has Mamoru stuck putting on a presentation of Snow White. This gets everyone fighting about who should be Snow White! Makoto suggests it should be her, because her breasts are largest! Ultimately Natsumi cheats her way into the part leaving Usagi to be the evil Queen and the rest of the Sailor Guardians, Naru and Umino as dwarves. Of course dwarf costumes are hard to come by so they instead end up in animal costumes! The whole time Natsumi has a sinister plot to steal a kiss from Mamoru, and it almost works twice, but Seijirou, in his jealousy, disrupts the play with your weekly Cardian attack.
