Sailor Moon S episodes 102 and 103 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon S episode 103 - Sailor Chibi Moon and her Pink Moon Stick

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon S are now available on Hulu and Neon Alley. With this week’s addition of episodes 102 and 103 we wrap up one story and start a new chapter. This is the sort of end of Kaolinite but then we see the return of Chibiusa, who we haven’t seen at all this season!

Sailor Moon S episode 102 - Minako as Sailor Moon

Episode 102, The Stolen Pure Heart: Usagi’s Crisis, is the continuation of the cliffhanger we were left with last week. Usagi can’t transform into Sailor Moon because Kaolinite has taken her broach. She asks for a ride from Haruka and Michiru, who are now convinced, along with Kaolinite, that Usagi is Sailor Moon. How does one get out of such a pinch? Dress up Minako as Sailor Moon! Minako does a decent job with the disguise as she manages to convince everyone that Usagi is nothing more than a fan, which gets Kaolinite to give up the broach as if it was worthless. A fight ensues in which Kaolinite takes the full brunt of Sailor Planet attack and then has her own attack reflected at her with Sailor Uranus’s World Shaking because apparently that’s how it works. She is frozen and then falls in the rubble of Tokyo Tower. She is assumed dead! This episode features the second time we hear “Ai No Senshi”, a song which we first heard during Sailor Moon R when the Sailor Guardians faced off against the Ayakashi Sisters.

Sailor Moon S episode 102 - Kaolinite dies

Sailor Moon S episode 103 - Spy8ing on Rei

Episode 103, The Arrival of a Small Pretty Guardian, is the beginning of a whole new part of Sailor Moon S, but the beginning of the episode doesn’t hint at it that much. The target is a drummer friend of Rei’s and the rest of the girls assume that this is actually a date. This causes a humorous confrontation in a restaurant where they are trying to spy on Rei and her friend, which ends in a mess, as expected. At a fair Usagi sees something in the reflection in the water which looks like Luna P, but it can’t be! Luna P doesn’t get seen much after this. I believe we don’t see her again until the Sailor Moon S finale and then never again. During the fight a familiar voice is heard. It’s Chibiusa transformed into Sailor Chibi Moon wielding the Pink Moon Stick, which she is not very adept with. Sailor Chibi Moon is not useful for pretty much the entire season so her appearance in fights is a bit of a joke. With that Chibiusa has returned! This episode also features the introduction of Eudial of the Witches 5. There are 5 of them but Eudial is the one that hangs around for the longest.

Sailor Moon S episode 103 - Luna P

To date the story has focused on Usagi and the rest of the Sailor Guardians but the series is about to get really focused on Chibiusa once again. Many fans dislike the way Chibiusa takes the focus away from other characters, but in reality she’s in the anime a whole lot less than she is in the manga. When Chibiusa leaves at the end of the Black Moon story arc in the manga she returns immediately and remains until the end. In the anime she’s gone for some time, returning only in this episode and staying only until the beginning of SailorStars. The anime gains and discards characters throughout the series, keeping nothing but the core 5 girls while in the manga when a new Sailor Guardians comes on board they mostly stay for good.

North Carolina Sailor Moon fans will have a chance to meet voice actors from Japan and North America at Animazement at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, North Carolina this coming May 22nd to the 24th! The convention will feature Keiko Han, who voiced Luna in the original Sailor Moon anime and the live action Sailor Moon series, as well as Amanda C. Miller, the voice of Sailor Juipter in Viz’s new dub of the original Sailor Moon anime.

Besides these Sailor Moon artists this convention will also feature a number of other guests from Japanese and English voices of many anime series.

Amanda C. Miller - The voice of Sailor Jupiter

Linda Ballantyne and Toby Proctor, the voices of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, to appear at Otafest in Calgary May 15th to the 17th

Linda Ballantyne and Toby Proctor at Otafest

Linda Ballantyne, the voice of Sailor Moon, and Toby Proctor, the voice of Tuxedo Mask, will be appearing at Otafest at the University of Calgary May 8th to the 10th. Amongst other events the convention will feature a live script reading of a Sailor Moon script with the two of them voicing their characters. I wonder what script they are planning to use, as the two have never appeared in the same episode together.

Linda Ballantyne is the third voice of Sailor Moon, voicing the character for the 3rd and 4th seasons, Sailor Moon S and SuperS. During these episodes the voice of Tuxedo Mask was provided by Vince Corazza. Toby Proctor is the second voice of Tuxedo Mask, taking over after Rino Romano voiced him for only a few episodes, covering most of the first two seasons, Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R. Toby Proctor’s Tuxedo Mask acted opposite Terri Hawkes, who was herself the second voice of Sailor Moon.

The schedule of events for Otafest is already online. Friday at 7:30pm North American the Voice Acting Roundtable will included Linda Ballantyne and Toby Proctor. This is followed by an autograph session at 8:30pm. Saturday afternoon the two actors have another autograph session at 1:30pm. The Sailor Moon script reading will take place on Sunday afternoon at 2pm

Sailor Moon episode 1 - Usagi runs into Mamoru

Sailor Moon S episodes 100 and 101 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon S episode 100 - Minako gets flowers from Artemis

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon S were added to Hulu and Neon Alley\ this morning. This week we look at two great romances in the series. First we have a look at Minako’s past as a volleyball player as her relationship with Artemis blossoms and then it’s Usagi’s birthday and she’s furious at Mamoru for not remembering it!

Sailor Moon S episode 100 - Minako blushes at Tsutomu

Episode 100, I Want to Quit Being a Sailor Guardian: Minako’s Dilemma, gives us a look at Minako’s past from even before she was Sailor V. The target this week is Tsutomo Asai, a classmate of Minako’s who she used to play volleyball with. She has a bit of a crush on him, and is a bit devastated to learn that although he used to feel the same way, he now has a girlfriend. Minako is troubled as she begins to miss her old simple life, before she had to start saving the world and such. She very briefly contemplates quitting being a Sailor Guardian, as the title suggests. Is this even an option? While fighting the Daimon of the week Minako does a signature volleyball move which Tsutomu recognizes. The lack of costumes fools everyone but you can’t hide volleyball techniques from a real pro! Following the fight he asks Minako to thank Sailor Venus, knowing fully well who Sailor Venus really is. He’s one of the few people in the series to learn a Sailor Guardian’s secret.

Sailor Moon S episode 100 - Artemis giving Minako flowers

Minako is heartbroken by the episode’s events but then her true love Artemis appears in a tree, offering her flowers and inviting her to go on a date with her. She’s flattered at the proposition, and looks at Artemis with loving eyes finally jokingly answering that she’ll think about it. Is there any doubt that Minako and Artemis are one of the great couples of the series?

Sailor Moon S episode 100 - Minako loves Artemis

Episode 101, Usagi in Tears: a Glass Slipper for My Birthday, has Usagi celebrating her 15th birthday! Usagi is excited to see what Mamoru will get her for her birthday only he’s completely forgotten it! Actually it seems he never actually knew her birthday in the first place. Indeed back in the mid 90s there were no Facebook or Google Plus profiles to tell us when someone’s birthday is. We had to remember, or forget, when someone’s birthday is. I suppose Mamoru also doesn’t know his daughter Chibiusa’s birthday, as it also happens to also be on June 30th. Mamoru seems to get a pass when everyone realizes that Usagi never told him when her birthday was but in months of dating, and knowing each other even longer, it’s kind of shocking that he never bothered to ask something so basic. It’s not as if they had only been dating for a few days or weeks here. Usagi is upset and wants a glass slipper to make up for it, which she gets but it turns into a Daimon. Oops! Kaolinite manages to steal Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Heart Compact and then Mamoru gets frozen into a huge glass crystal. All hope seems lost until … À Suivre.

Sailor Moon S episode 101 - Usagi mad at Mamoru

The time span of the anime, which aired over a 5 year period, is questionable at best. We don’t have a ton of indications of the passage of time aside from occasional mentions of Usagi’s age. She is mentioned throughout the first season, including the first episode, and in the Sailor Moon R movie as being 14 years old. In this episode Usagi celebrates her 15th birthday on June 30th. Later in Sailor Moon SuperS she states that she is 15 years old and then in the final episode of SailorStars, episode 200, she states that she is 16 years old. Throughout all of this every season appears to go through an entire year by going through all of the seasons making it seem as if 5 years pass in real time. In the Manga everyone ages 5 years but here in the anime it seems to be more like 2.

Sailor Moon S episodes 98 and 99 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon S episode 98 - Sailor Moon crushing on Sailor Uranus

The two latest episodes of Sailor Moon S are now available to stream on Hulu and Neon Alley. This week Mamoru’s two main love interests are shown to be attracted to other people, first as Sailor Moon is attracted to Sailor Uranus and then as Rei is attracted to Haruka and to a lesser extent Yuuichirou.

Sailor Moon S episode 98 - Sailor Uranus and Sailor Moon

Episode 98, To Save Our Friends: Moon and Uranus Join Forces is all about shipping Usagi and Haruka. The target is some motorcycle guy but we don’t care about him. Haruka does dirt biking and gets targeted by some thugs. This, combined with Usagi missing a bus, is a good excuse to have them ride a bike together and share some romantic moments. Once conveniently separated and transformed, Michiru falls into a waterfall leaving them together and alone, again. To make things even more intimate the Diamon ties them together with handcuffs, leading to great intimacy. The two hide in a cave where they do a little bonding, do a little scratching and then do some hugging. Sailor Moon notices that Sailor Uranus has a sent very similar to Haruka’s, but this moment of enlightenment is interrupted once again by the enemy. Unimportant monster fighting follows.

Sailor Moon S episode 99 - Rei crushing on Haruka

Episode 99, A Man’s Kindness: Yuichiro Heartbroken by Rei, continues the abusive relationship between Yuuichirou and Rei! Rei is seen flirting with someone who Yuuichirou believes to be a handsome man but who is actually Haruka, a handsome woman. He is heartbroken by this and no one really does anything to clear things up as he decides to leave town, knowing he can not compete with such an attractive man. He almost boards a train but it happens to become a monster at the last moment. The episode wraps up with Rei and Yuuichirou not really getting together once again! So this episode has some Rei and Haruka shipping and some not quite so satisfying Rei and Yuuichirou shipping. A song not included in any Sailor Moon soundtrack is played while Yuuichirou is leaving. This is a song from 1977 named Azusa Nigou by the band Karyudo.

Sailor Moon banned in China?

Chinese Sailor Moon Manga

It has been reported by EJI Insight that the Chinese Government is banning 62 manga series including Sailor Moon. Other affected series would be Detective Conan, Naruto and One Piece. The Government has shut down 10 web sites which had Japanese anime or manga content because they were said to induce teenagers to engage in violence and pornography.

Chinese Sailor Moon VCD

The English article from EJI Insight mentions Ming Pao Daily as a source. A little searching turned up the following Chinese article on the Ming Pao site from that same day discussing the issue. My Chinese is non existent but Google Translate seems to suggest that this article makes mostly reference to the banning of anime, rather than manga, and mentions that the Ministry of Culture stated only that these titles are under investigation. The source for the claim that 62 series are being banned is mentioned only as being “Online sources”. Given the language barrier I am incapable of verifying these sources.

Codename: Sailor V - Complete Edition Manga - Colour pages - Vol. 13

Based on the nature of this information I’m hesitant to say that the ban has actually taken place, but it appears to be something the Chinese Government may be investigating. If any Chinese readers are able to find more information about this issue it would be great if you could share it with us through the comments or the contact page.

Update: (2015-04-15) Sailor Moon Crystal is currently viewable in China. As of today the Chinese subtitled version of Sailor Moon Crystal can be viewed by fans in China. The screenshot below can verify this.

Sailor Moon S episodes 96 and 97 are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon S episode 96 - Makoto infatuated with Haruka

The latest two episodes of Sailor Moon S are now available on Hulu and Neon Alley. This week two of the Sailor Guardians are targeted as first Makoto and then Ami have their Pure Hearts stolen by the Death Busters.

Sailor Moon S episode 96 - Rei is embarrassed by her All Girl Review Picture Album

Episode 96, Coldhearted Uranus: Makoto in Danger, has Makoto infatuated with Haruka. Makoto and Usagi are walking across the street on the appropriate crosswalk when Haruka flies in on her motorcycle. In her usual protective ways Makoto dives on Usagi to protect her, injuring her hand in the process. It’s clear here that Haruka has committed a traffic violation of some kind as she stops right in the middle of the pedestrian cross walk. What if this had been a child crossing the street? Or Luna who seems to spend a great deal of time in the middle of the road? Makoto is totally crushing on Haruka as she gets involved in a complicated scarf returning situation with her. The attraction is not in the slightest bit subtle. Usagi and her friends are concerned with this as Makoto gets targeted by this week’s Daimon and in doing so somehow gets Haruka’s attention. Another joke is thrown in here about Rei having a magazine with a lady with a moustache on the cover. It’s called “All Girl Review Picture Album”. I can’t say I really understood what this reference was actually about back in the day but I believe it is something similar to the all female actor troupes like those appearing in the latest Sailor Moon musicals. Makoto eventually explains her fascination with Haruka as being a sort of admiration, but it’s a bit hard to ignore the lesbian attraction that is fairly clearly demonstrated in this episode. This season has a lot of that. At one point the issue of the young Haruka driving is addressed. Haruka explains that she got her license abroad, but this appears to be a complete lie. The answer, it seems, is that Haruka is driving illegally.

Sailor Moon S episode 96 - Haruka got her license overseas

Sailor Moon S episode 97 - Ami swimming

Episode 97, The Labyrinth of Water: Ami Targeted, is of course all about Ami. She spends a lot of time swimming yet it’s her friends that get the flack for her ignoring her studies! A jerk teacher tells her that she needs to spend less time hanging around reprobates like her friends. We can only assume this mostly means Usagi and it’s really just Usagi and Minako that are terrible at school. Rei attends a fancy school which we know next to nothing about and we don’t really know how Makoto’s grades fare despite her living alone and supporting herself mysteriously. Usagi thinks that the best thing for Ami is for her to be isolated from her friends so that she can concentrate on her studies. This is a bit silly of course as she could have simply left the country to concentrate on her studies during the last season but chose not to. Ami swims a lot. Then she races Michiru, who is upset she didn’t give it her all. This is funny when we learn in SailorStars that Haruka always paces herself when Michiru runs. On a rematch they both go all out which Ami finds satisfying. A semi joking scene at the end of this episode insinuates that Ami is attracted to Mamoru. Does anyone ship these two? They hardly have the well established relationship that Mamoru and Rei share.

RSVP to see Jennifer Cihi perform at Gundam Planet in New Jersey July 17th

Jennifer Cihi

Jersey City and New York City Sailor Moon fans may be able to see Jennifer Cihi, who performed many songs for the original English version of Sailor Moon, perform at Gundam Planet in New Jersey. She will be in the area but will only be able to hold a performance if there is enough interest to support it. The event is tentatively scheduled for July 17th. Respond to this Facebook event to show your interest.

Jennifer Cihi, who is credited as the singing voice of Sailor Moon, appears in a number of songs played throughout the original DiC dub of the Sailor Moon anime. On the three Sailor Moon soundtracks her name is credited as Sailor Moon, Princess Serena and Sailor Mars. She has provided the vocals for “I Wanna Be A Star!”, “My Only Love”, “Carry On”, “It’s A New Day”, “Call My Name”, “The Power of Love”, “I Want Someone to Love”, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “Who Do You Think You Are?”.

The first 14 episodes of Viz’s new dub of Sailor Moon R are now available on Hulu

Sailor Moon R dub on Hulu

You can now watch the first 14 episodes of Sailor Moon R on Hulu and Neon Alley. This includes the entire Makai Tree story arc as well as the first episode featuring Chibiusa and the Black Moon Clan. Like with the previous releases of dubbed episodes on Hulu these will only be online for a limited time. They will be removed on June 7th 2015.

Sailor Moon episode 47 - Ail and An

Episodes 47 to 59 are a non manga story arc focusing on the characters of Ail and An, aliens posing as humans Seijuro and Natsumi. They arrive on Earth with the Makaiju or Makai Tree and proceed to drain human energy to feed it and keep themselves alive. Episode 60, Angel or Devil? the Mysterious Girl from the Sky, is the first episode to feature Chibiusa and the Black Moon Clan. The episodes included are somewhat strategic, meant to showcase a wide variety of voices and get us excited for the upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray release of Sailor Moon R. Sailor Moon R Season 2 Part 1 collects episodes 47 to 68 and is set to be released on July 14th. It can currently be pre-ordered from The Right Stuf.

Sailor Moon R episode 54 - Rei singing

One notable inclusion is episode 54, The School Festival Is for Me?! Queen Rei’s Song, which includes a couple of songs as performed by Rei’s voice actor Cristina Vee. In the original Japanese version Rei performs the song Eien no Melody which is translated here into English as Eternal Melody. In the original DiC dub of Sailor Moon had the song Oh Starry Night included, which has roughly the same melody as the original song but very different lyrics. The other song performed is Hottokenai Yo or I Can’t Leave Her Alone though only a short part of it is heard.
