Bandai’s Proplica Moon Stick first impressions

Proplica Moon Stick in stand with crystal

Bandai’s Proplica Moon Stick is now available in North America! I received mine a few days ago and I think it looks great. This is by far the most accurate looking Moon Stick to date. It comes with a stand, a swappable Silver Crystal and even a cradle to put the Silver Crystal in when not in use.

Above is a size comparison of this toy to a few others I had. The toy lights up and plays a variety of sound clips, given you get the three LR44 batteries it takes. I was able to find some at the dollar store. The sounds it makes are different depending on how long you hold the button, what the switch at the base of the toy is set to and whether or not the Silver Crystal is in the toy. Voice clips are from the anime, mostly being that of Kotono Mitsuishi though Mika Doi can also be heard as the voice of Queen Serenity. The manual coming with the toy describes all of these, given you can read Japanese, and also gives an overview of the Moon Stick in the anime and other toys that came before it.

Sailor Moon Crystal voice actors and character artwork plus new musical information

New character designs for Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus from Sailor Moon Crystal

The Sailor Moon live event featuring new information about the upcoming Sailor Moon musical and Sailor Moon anime is complete and with that we have a great deal of new information. For the new anime, Sailor Moon Crystal, we have some new character art for all five of the main cast as well as the full cast listing. Most notable is the return of Kotono Mitsuishi, the original voice of Sailor Moon from the 1992 Sailor Moon anime, who will be reprising her role as Usagi in Sailor Moon Crystal. This was heavily insinuated at the original event announcing the new anime but now we have official confirmation.

New character designs for Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus from Sailor Moon Crystal

New voice actresses will be joining the show for the voices of Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus. The new cast will include Hisako Kanemoto as Sailor Mercury, Rina Sato as Sailor Mars, Ami Koshimizu as Sailor Jupiter and Shizuka Ito as Sailor Venus. Click on their names to view their Wikipedia pages and see what roles they’ve done in the past.

The cast of Sailor Moon Petite Étrangère

In addition to the new information about the new Sailor Moon anime Sailor Moon Crystal we also got details about the Sailor Moon musicals! Last September’s new musical, Sailor Moon La reconquista, will be released on DVD on July 9th 2014. Most of the cast, with the exception of Sailor Mercury, will be returning for this summer’s new musical which is titled Petite Étrangère, which is French for “Little Stranger” with the feminine usage of both words leading us to believe we’re talking about Chibiusa. The musical will play in Tokyo from August 21st to the 31st and in Osaka from September 5th to the 7th. The new Sailor Mercury will be played by Momo Koyama.

Here’s a look at all of the new voice actors from Sailor Moon Crystal:

A commercial for Bandai’s PROLICA Moon Stick

PROLICA Moon Stick Commercial

Here’s a commercial for Bandai’s PROLICA Moon Stick replica. This 1:1 high quality Moon Stick will be on sale this coming April. It will be expensive (about $90 US) and there have not been any details about a North American release of the product to date. You can pre-order it from JList now.

This commercial clearly shows that this Moon Stick is meant to be modelled after the item from the original Anime. We previously speculated that this toy might be from the new anime, set to start in January, and that the similarity and use of Kotono Mitsuishi’s voice were telling of the show’s designs and casting, but we now know that this is not relevant as it is based on the 1992 anime’s designs.

PROLICA Moon Stick - Zoomed in

We’ve got a better look at the new Tamashii Nations Moon Stick toy which we now know will go on sale in Japan next April. The Moon Stick is part of the new PROLICA line which is a portmanteau of prop and replica. This very accurate looking life sized replica will retail for 8,800 yen, which is about $90 US, though you can currently preorder it from JList for $120. The crystal included is removable. There are 7 coloured LEDs on the Moon Stick and it comes with a stand for displaying.

PROLICA Moon Stick - Lights

The Moon Stick includes a voice chip which will speak in the voice of Sailor Moon’s voice actress Kotono Mitsuishi. With the new anime planned for January, 3 months before this toy is released, some are speculating that Kotono Mitsuishi’s voice being used for this Moon Stick could mean that she will be reprising her role as Sailor Moon in the show. If a new actress was playing Sailor Moon when this toy was released it could cause confusion for this prop to have a different voice. Kotono Mitsuishi mentioned being interested in reprising her role at the 20th Anniversary Event last summer when the new anime was originally announced but we have not yet had any confirmation of any casting for the show. It’s likely that this Moon Stick’s design and voice are simply based off of the original anime, which the identical design certainly supports, but having not seen any art from the new anime yet it’s possible the new Moon Stick will also look like this.

SDCC 2012: Kodansha Comics panel

Sailor Moon vol. 6 - Kodansha Comics panel at SDCC 2012

On Thursday at San Diego Comic-con Kodansha, publisher of the Japanese Sailor Moon manga and the current US translations, held a comic panel where the main topic of interest was Sailor Moon. Anime News Network and Anime Diet covered the event. Here are the important details!

Information about the 2013 anime series was repeated. It was mentioned that while Kotono Mitsuishi is hoping to get the job as the voice of Sailor Moon that casting has not in fact happened yet.

The new editions of the manga will have a US release and will include colour pages.

There appears to have been a lot of people complaining about various quality issues with the manga translations currently being released (available in our amazon store…) and one rep from Kodansha was quoted to have said “There are some people on Twitter that are kind of mean”. Welcome to the Internet! All in all Sailor Moon is their top selling book so they are doing quite well despite all those mean people who are likely still buying their book because hey it’s Sailor Moon so who cares about a few problems, just buy it!

Aside from that there were a lot of things they weren’t able to comment on, and I see no point in reiterating that stuff.

Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary live show - Kotono Mitsuishi, Toru Furuya and Fumio Osano

Last Friday we were happy to share with you the news of the new Sailor Moon anime series set to air in the summer of 2013. This news was announced in a 20th anniversary live show which has now been translated by the Sailor Moon fan subbing web site Miss Dream. We’ve included the video below. Here are the important facts about the new show! It will be an all new anime series starting in 2013. Kotono Mitsuishi and Toru Furuya will be reprising their roles as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask. Momoiro Clover Z will be doing the theme song but unlike we mentioned in our previous news item it does not seem that the song they performed during this event will be the theme song. After the video we’ll be sharing more thoughts on the video, what we saw and why Toru Furaya is a dirty, dirty liar!

A big thanks to the staff at Miss Dream for putting this together. They have also expressed their intentions to fan sub the series as it airs.
