Original Sailor Moon anime to replay in Japan starting May 5th

Sailor Moon episode 1 - Usagi removing a bandage from Luna's head

Japanese satellite channel TV Asahi channel 1 will begin replaying the first season of the 1992 Sailor Moon anime starting on the 5th of May. This is not a free channel so the show will not be viewable by everyone. The TV Asahi web site mentions that the show will be airing from 5 to 6pm on Sundays, meaning that they will be playing two episode per week in this time slot. The site only mentions the original 46 episode, having run from March 7th 1992 to March 23rd 1993, so there is currently no indication of specific plans to follow this airing up with Sailor Moon R. Replaying this first season will take roughly six months at this rate.

Fans have been waiting for more information about the new 2013 Sailor Moon anime but such information has still not come. Is TV Asahi trying to capitalize on the impending hype for the new series? Unfortunately we can’t consider this move as an indication of much since Sailor Moon has been replayed in Japan a number of times since it’s original airing back in the day.

Yuko Minaguchi, the voice of Sailor Saturn

Both of these Japanese voice actors have a ton of anime credits to their name and will surely have a very interesting perspective on the voice acting world in Japan and their roles in Sailor Moon. Though the schedule is not determined yet Animazement generally have guest panels and autograph signings. Check out Animazement’s guest page to see if any other of you favourite Japanese voice actors will be in appearance.

Momoiro Clover Z reenact the Sailor Moon S opening

Momoiro Clover Z - Sailor Moon S intro - Sailor Team

Unfortunately today’s appearance of Momoiro Clover Z on Japanese TV show Bakusho Show Battle did not have them performing the theme song to the new Sailor Moon 2013 anime as we previously reported. This was not an April fool’s joke but rather a misunderstood translation of the Japanese announcement. Apologies if we got your hopes up.

What we did get is a shot for shot remake of the opening of the Sailor Moon S season of the anime in which Momoiro Clover Z sing Moonlight Densetsu. You can watch the full clip below, assuming this clip does not get pulled as others have. You can compare their version to the actual Sailor Moon S opening being shown on the lower right corner of the screen.

Bakusho Show Battle is a Japanese TV show in which bands square off against each other doing a parody of a popular intro. You can find out more about this episode from Yahoo! Japan’s episode guide.

Here is the second panel by Terri Hawkes, the voice of Sailor Moon, from this year’s G-Anime convention in Gatineau. In this panel Terri talks about what it’s like working as an actor, writer and director in the entertainment industry. It’s mainly geared towards people who are interested in pursuing this kind of work. There is some mention of her time working on Sailor Moon so fans of the show should check it out.

Also be sure to check out Terri Hawkes’s panel on voicing Sailor Moon as well as the interview I did with her at G-Anime.

Tellu voiced by Chieko Honda

Last Monday, on February 18th 2013, voice actress Chieko Honda died following a battle with cancer. She was only 49. Chieko Honda was a veteran voice actor best known to Sailor Moon fans for providing the voice of Tellu of the Witches 5 in Sailor Moon S. Though she only appeared in a couple of episodes of the show, her contribution will not soon be forgotten by fans.

New Sailor Moon S figures for sale in May 2013

3D Render of a new Sailor Moon figure from China's ACG Comic Expo

New figures of Sailor Moon and the rest of the nine Sailor Soldiers will be available in May from Legend Studio.

New Sailor Moon S figures from ACG Comic Expo

Sailor Moon Collectibles reports that a few pictures from the ACG Comic Expo in Guangzhou, China from December have surfaced. These pictures show that there will be the nine figures of Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Pluto, Uranus, Neptune and Saturn. Unfortunately we just get cutouts with no real indication of what the toys would look like for most of the girls but we get a bit more of a look at Sailor Moon herself. There are some CG renders of the Sailor Moon figure and it’s individual parts which gives us a good idea of what the finished product might look like. We see for example that the figure will have a number of swappable faces and by seeing all the pieces we can get a good idea of the articulation the final product might have.

Countless Sailor Moon references in Ebiten

Ebiten episode 2 - Sailor FukuSailor Moon posing

Ebiten is an animated Internet series that has also played on TV in Japan. The second episode of the show features more Sailor Moon references than you could ever hope for as the main character relives many events from Sailor Moon, transforms into Tailor Moon and breaks the fourth wall by making reference to the similarities. Not only are there references in the characters and actions in the episode but many sequences are nearly frame by frame recreations of counterparts in Sailor Moon. I’ve tried to put together a list of as many of these as possible. Fans of Sailor Moon would be best to simply watch the episode in question and marvel at the similarities. The first episode is available streaming at Crunchyroll or from NyaaTorrents.

With that being said keep reading for a bit of a play by play of the similarities as they happened. For the most part these similarities were to the first episode of the Sailor Moon anime and to the Sailor Moon R movie.
