The first images of the Sailor Animamates from Sailor Moon Cosmos have been revealed

Sailor Moon Cosmos Character and Relationship Chart

When the second Sailor Moon Cosmos trailer dropped a few days ago many fans were wondering where the Sailor Animamates were. Well we’ve finally got our first look at them! A character and relationship chart was posted to the Sailor Moon Cosmos official site. This includes pretty much all of the major characters from the Sailor Moon Crystal films. We’ve seen a lot of these before however the important additions are the Sailor Animamates as well as Sailor Phi and Chi and Sailor Lethe and Mnemosyne.

If you’re looking to get a close look at these characters just click through on the chart and you’ll see everyone’s image. The art in these isn’t fantastic but evidently the finished product in the film looks great judging by the trailer.

Familiar to fans of the original Sailor Moon anime are Sailor Iron Mouse, Sailor Tin Nyanko, Sailor Aluminum Seiren and Sailor Lead Crow.

There was one more Sailor Animamate in the manga, Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon. Papillon is the French word for butterfly, hence the wings.

Another few characters who are from the manga but not the original anime are a couple of pairs of Sailor Guardians. There’s Sailor Phi and Chi as well as Sailor Lethe and Mnemosyne.

There are many other characters in that chart with new art for their designs you can check out. I’m only posting the new ones in this post because they seem most newsworthy.

Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 1 will be released in theatres in Japan on June 9th with Part 2 following a few weeks later on June 30th. We don’t have any specifics yet about a North American release of the film. Sailor Moon Eternal was released on Netflix in many countries outside of Japan so that may be what’s planned for this film. A worldwide theatrical release of the film would certainly be great though the world of movie theatres is in a pretty dismal state right now.

Sailor Moon Cosmos - Trailer #2 - Sailor Saturn

The second full trailer for Sailor Moon Cosmos has been released on the Sailor Moon official site. These are all characters that we’ve seen in the last trailer but it’s nice to get a new and better look at some of them. Sailor Galaxia features prominently in this one as well as Sailor Chibi Chibi. You can watch the trailer on YouTube or embedded below.

One shot near the end of the trailer showing everyone supporting Sailor Moon is quite similar to a scene from the original Sailor Moon anime during the fight against Queen Beryl in the first season. Intentional homage? I suspect it is. I don’t believe this particular scene is based on a specific page in the manga. Given what’s going on with everyone in the scene this is based on I suspect this may parallel what’s happening and who’s including.

You can watch Sailor Moon for free on Pluto TV and YouTube if you live in the US

Sailor Moon on Pluto TV

Great news for people who live in the United States of America and pretty much no one else. There are a couple of ways to watch Sailor Moon for free online! A couple of weeks ago Viz uploaded all episodes of the original Sailor Moon anime and Sailor Moon Crystal to their YouTube channel. You can watch them through this handy playlist. As I’m Canadian I only see an empty playlist but it seems Americans should see actual episodes there. Enjoy!

Yesterday Pluto TV added a Sailor Moon channel to its lineup. What exactly that looks like I couldn’t really say because as a Canadian I don’t have access but Americans should be able to see something.

But don’t worry fellow Canadians! Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal have been free on Tubi for years. The original Sailor Moon anime is also available on the streaming service Crave for those who have a subscription to that.

Of course you can always just buy the Blu-ray sets and watch those if you’re into physical media.

Sailor Moon R Complete Second Season is now out on Blu-ray … again

Sailor Moon R Complete Season Blu-Ray - Cover

Today is the day! The second full season Sailor Moon Blu-ray set with remastered video has been released. Why, you may ask, would I buy this set? Well maybe you didn’t buy Sailor Moon R Part 1 and 2 when they were released many years ago or if you did perhaps you’re quite picky about the quality of your anime and want to experience Sailor Moon R in the best quality possible! This set, like the first season set released last year, is made from new masters which are of considerably better quality than the first release. To be clear this is still an upscaled release meaning they used a standard definition source and used software to convert it to high definition, rather than going back to the film source, but the quality of the source material and the process used to upscale it have yielded a better result than what was release in 2015. Beyond that the price is better! MSRP is $49.99 US and the set is on sale on Amazon for only $39.99 right now. If you’re looking to order it you can support the site but using the Amazon link below.

I got my set today and am looking forward to watch it. Did you pick it up?

The Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show has been canceled

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Prism On Ice - Sailor Guardians

After numerous delays over many years the Sailor Moon Prism On Ice show has been canceled. This star studded show was originally planned for the summer of 2020 but was delayed until the summer of 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year the decision to postpone the show until the summer of 2023 was taken but now the show has been canceled for good. Two pieces of art done by Naoko Takeuchi have been released. These would have been used as part of the show’s promotion but with the show now canceled they are being shared to fans.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Prism On Ice - Tuxedo Mask and Princess Serenity

This show would have featured figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva as Sailor Moon as well as a number of other world class figures skaters such as Kurt Browning.

A new trailer and poster for Sailor Moon Cosmos have been released

Sailor Moon Cosmos poster

There were a couple of big updates yesterday as the official Sailor Moon site was updated with a new Sailor Moon Cosmos poster and trailer. The poster includes Sailor Galaxia, Princess Kakyuu, the Sailor Starlights and even a quick look at Sailor Cosmos in the gem on the bottom right of the poster. The trailer includes a lot of scenes from later in the story. You can watch it on YouTube or embedded below.

To me this trailer feels like it could be the trailer for Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 2, the second of the two films. Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 1 will be released on June 9th with Part 2 planned for June 30th, Usagi’s birthday. I would have expected a trailer like this showing many scenes which are likely in the second film, to be released only after the first part hits theatres. There is no specific distinction in the trailer which makes it apply more to one part or another as it simply refers to the films as Sailor Moon Cosmos.

Sailor Moon Cosmos trailer - Chibi Chibi

In this trailer we once again see the Sailor Starlights but also get a good look at Sailor Galaxia, Princess Kakyuu and Chibi Chibi. Chibiusa and Mamoru also feature briefly, which is how they will also be appearing in the films.

What do you think of the trailer? Who were you most excited to see in it?

Check out the first images and voice actor information for Princess Kakyuu, Sailor Galaxia and Chibi Chibi

Nana Mizuki as Princess Kakyuu,, Megumi Hayashibara as Sailor Galaxia and Kotono Mitsuishi as Chibi Chbibi

We’ve got more cast details and our first look at Princess Kakyuu, Sailor Galaxia and Chibi Chibi from the upcoming Sailor Moon Cosmos films. The movies will start Nana Mizuki as Princess Kakyuu, Megumi Hayashibara as Sailor Galaxy and Kotono Mitsuishi as Chibi Chibi.

Nana Mizuki as Princess Kakyuu

Nana Mizuki, the voice of Sailor Kakyuu, is a voice actor known for such roles as Hinata Hyuga in Naruto, Tsubomi Hanasaki in Heartcatch Precure! and Ann Takamaki in Persona 5.

Megumi Hayashibara as Sailor Galaxia

Megumi Hayashibara, the voice of Sailor Galaxia, is a well known veteran voice actor. Some of her more memorable roles include Rei Ayanami and Pen Pen in Evangelion, Pidgeotto and Pidgeot in Pokémon, Ai Amano in Video Girl Ai, Lina Inverse in Slayers, Faye Valentine in Cowboy Bebop and Ai Haibara in Detective Conan.

Kotono Mitsuishi as Chibi Chibi

Fans will surely recognize Kotono Mitsuishi, the voice of Chibi Chibi, as providing the voice of Sailor Moon in both the original Sailor Moon anime and Sailor Moon Crystal. By providing the voice for Chibi Chibi this continues the tradition from the original Sailor Moon anime of having Kotono Mitsuishi provide the voices of both Sailor Moon and Chibi Chibi. As Sailor Moon Cosmos will more closely follow the story of the manga than the original anime this will make sense considering Chibi Chibi’s true identity.

What do you think of the designs for these characters? Are you excited for this new cast?

A new Sailor Moon Cosmos trailer introduces the Sailor Starlights

Sailor Moon Cosmos - Sailor Starlights reveal trailer - Seiya and Usagi

A new trailer for the Sailor Moon Cosmos films has been released and this one includes the Sailor Starlights! We also have photos and names of the voice actors who will be portraying them and release dates for both parts of the films in June. In the trailer we see Seiya, Yaten and Taiki also known as the idol group The Three Lights as well as their Sailor Guardian counterparts The Sailor Starlights! You can watch the trailer on YouTube or embedded below.

We already knew that the Sailor Moon Cosmos films cover the Stars arc of the Sailor Moon manga in which the Sailor Starlights feature heavily so seeing them isn’t a surprise but it is nice to finally see them. They sure do look great! We have a few clips of Seiya and Usagi on a rooftop, many clips of the Three Lights as their civilian identities and a bit of transformation sequences and attacks for the Sailor Starlights. There’s also a bit of music, something that is likely to be an important part of the film as the Three Lights are an idol group who perform many songs. Manga is not a medium which lends itself to music but the original Sailor Moon anime had a lot of Three Lights songs, and these films surely will as well!

Sailor Moon Cosmos - Sailor Starlights reveal trailer - Sailor Star Fighter

Seiya Kou, Sailor Star Fighter, will be voiced by Marina Inoue who has been an anime voice actor for nearly twenty years. She is known for having provided the voices of Armin Arlert from Attack on Titan, Momo Yaoyorozu from My Hero Academia and Cure March from Smile PreCure!

Sailor Moon Cosmos - Sailor Starlights reveal trailer - Sailor Star Maker

Taiki Kou, Sailor Star Maker, will be voiced by Saori Hayami, a voice actor and singer who’s been working for about 15 years. Her voice acting credits include Leona from Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and Himawari Uzumaki from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

Sailor Moon Cosmos - Sailor Starlights reveal trailer - Sailor Star Healer

Yaten Kou, Sailor Star Healer, will be voiced by Ayane Sakura, who’s been doing voice acting for about 12 years. Her roles include Ochaco Uraraka from My Hero Academia and Yae Miko from Genshin Impact.

Sailor Moon Cosmos - Saori Hayami as Sailor Star Maker, Marina Inoue as Sailor Star Fighter and Ayane Sakura as Sailor Star Healer

Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 1 will be in theatres in Japan on June 9th followed by Part 2 on June 30th. There has not yet been a date announced for an international release.

Sailor Moon R Complete Second Season will be released on Blu-ray February 28th

Sailor Moon R Complete Season Blu-Ray - Cover

A full eight months after the first season of the original Sailor Moon anime was released on Blu-ray we are finally getting Sailor Moon R released as well! This single release containing the entire second season of Sailor Moon is coming February 28th 2023 with an MSRP of $49.99. Like with the season 1 release this is likely a new and improved version of the Blu-ray with better video quality than what was released in 2015. This release will have the original Japanese audio, Viz’s new English dub and optional subtitles. I was very happy with the first season release and look forward to getting this!

Sailor Moon R Complete Season Blu-Ray - Contents

The set is currently available to pre-order from RightStuf for $44.99. It’s also listed on Amazon however no price is currently indicated and there is no option to purchase the set yet.

Sailor Moon Laserdisc vol. 4

Does the box art look familiar? It should! This art was originally used for a Laserdisc cover for the first season release of the original Sailor Moon anime. This image of Sailor Moon appeared on volume 4. This was reused for the first VHS and DVD cover of the dub only release by ADV, the first DVD cover of the original Japanese DVD release and the inside cover of the first Japanese Blu-ray. It’s also similar to a pose that Sailor Moon makes in the intro to the Sailor Moon R Movie. Seeing it used as a Sailor Moon R cover is a bit odd but it does seem that they updated Sailor Moon’s broach to the season appropriate Crystal Star.

Sailor Moon Japanese Blu-Ray Vol. 1 - Comparison between dub only DVD, Japanese DVD and new Blu-Ray

By looking at the back of the box we don’t get much of an indication of anything new. As with the first season it seems likely we will get the same features as were included in the 2015 DVD and Blu-ray release. Since the first season set had a new interview included it is possible that some new content is in this set, but we don’t see it listed at this time.

Sailor Moon R Complete Season Blu-Ray - Back

Will you be picking up this set? Is it worth double dipping for you? I bought the first season again and am very happy with the set!
