Susan Roman to appear at Unplugged Expo in Toronto this October

Sailor Jupiter - Susan Roman

Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter from the English dub of the original Sailor Moon Anime, will be joining Stephanie Morgenstern at the 2nd Unplugged Expo which will be taking place October 26th and 27th at the Daniels Spectrum Centre in downtown Toronto. This was announced by Susan Roman in the following video:

She concludes by saying “maybe the other Sailor Scouts will be there to say hi too”. Unplugged Expo is trying to get as many of the Canadian voice actors from Sailor Moon together for this convention as possible. Let’s hope there are more announcements to come! Stay up to date by following the Unplugged Expo Facebook page.

This will mark Susan Roman’s third Toronto convention appearance this year after attending Anime North last month and the upcoming Fan Expo in August. It’s a great time to be a Sailor Moon fan in Toronto! (or a Sailor Moon fan in Ottawa who doesn’t mind putting mileage on his car)

Fan Expo to host a Sailor Moon cast reunion in Toronto this August

Sailor Moon Voice Actors' Q&A panel at Anime North 2013 featuring John Stocker, Linda Ballantyne, Katie Griffin and Susan Roman

At this year’s Fan Expo convention in Toronto Canada, August 22nd to the 25th, there will be a Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Cast Reunion! This will include Toby Proctor, the voice of Tuxedo Mask, Linda Ballantyne, the voice of Sailor Moon, Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter, Katie Griffin, the voice of Sailor Mars and John Stocker, voice director for the series.

Fan Expo is a huge convention which includes an Anime stream amongst many others. Unfortunately at least year’s convention the Sailor Moon guests in attendance were not involved in any panels, but with this reunion going on there will hopefully be more Sailor Moon related events for fans eager to meet their favourite voice actors.

Memories of the 80s panel at Anime North 2013 featuring Sailor Moon’s John Stocker and Susan Roman

Memories of the 80s panel from Anime North 2013 featuring John Stocker and Susan Roman

This past weekend at Anime North 2013 in Toronto Sailor Moon voice director John Stocker and the voice of Sailor Jupiter Susan Roman got together for a Memories of the 80s panel and we’ve got a full video of it. This panel is not Sailor Moon themed but with their shared background on the show and the room’s general interest in the series a lot of the discussion ended up being around their experiences dubbing the Sailor Moon anime. These two have had long careers in the industry and offer some great insight into working in voice dubbing in Toronto during the 80s, through the time Sailor Moon was airing and today.

Here is a video of the Sailor Moon Voice Actors Q&A panel from Anime North 2013 in Toronto this past weekend. The panel features John Stocker, voice director for Sailor Moon S and SuperS, Linda Ballantyne, the voice of Sailor Moon for Sailor Moon S and SuperS, Katie Griffin, the voice of Sailor Mars, and Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter.

John Stocker mentions that FUNimation will dub the new Sailor Moon anime

John Stocker mentioned that FUNimation will dub the new Sailor Moon anime

May 29th Update: In response to this claim FUNimation has mentioned that they do not hold the license for Sailor Moon.

With no official announcement about this information it should be treated as a rumour, but this clip is being provided as the full context for this comment. John Stocker, voice director for the Sailor Moon S and SuperS series of Sailor Moon as well as the movies, mentioned at a “Memories of the 80s” panel at Anime North 2013 that FUNimation has the rights to dub the new Sailor Moon anime. A short clip including this is shown below.

This is not an official announcement but it should be considered that John Stocker works in the voice acting industry and that this is the kind of information he may very well have come by when dealing with his professional contacts. Note also that it is mentioned that this has been in the works for three years now. If this is the case this may be referring what is or once was a redubbing of the original Sailor Moon anime rather than the new show, though it would stand to reason that regardless of what that means that whoever holds the rights to dub the original anime may very well also have the rights to dub the new Sailor Moon anime which we are currently expecting to begin airing later this year or early in 2014.

This information is consistent with what was mentioned by John Stocker in our interview with him at last year’s Fan Expo when he mentioned that he had heard about Houston as the place for this dub to happen but didn’t know if this was true. Since then he certainly seems much more sure of his answer.

Joining John Stocker in this panel is voice actor Susan Roman who provided the voice of Sailor Jupiter. The rest of this “Memories of the 80s” panel as well as the “Sailor Moon Voice Actors Q&A” recorded at Anime North 2013 in Toronto will be posted to the site as soon as possible.

Schedule of Sailor Moon related events at Anime North

Sailor Moon - Linda Ballantyne

Anime North 2013 is fast approaching. It will take place May 24th to the 26th in Toronto. As we’ve mentioned earlier there are four voice actors from the English dub of Sailor Moon in appearance, that being Linda Ballantyne, the voice of Sailor Moon from the later seasons, Katie Griffin, the voice of Sailor Mars, Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter, and John Stocker who did many smaller roles but also worked as voice director for many later episodes and movies. The Anime North schedule is now online on their web site and we’ve combed through it to pick out all the relevant information related to Sailor Moon!

Sailor Mars - Katie Griffin

There are five panels featuring voice actors and staff from Sailor Moon.

Friday from 6:00 to 7:00 pm John Stocker will be part of the “Behind the Mic” panel which includes a few voice actors. This will take place in the Toronto Room.

Friday from 8:00 to 9:30 pm the panel “Ask an Anime Character” will include Linda Ballentine, Katie Griffin and Susan Roman as well as voice actor Trina Nishimura. This will also take place in the Toronto Room.

Saturday from 1:00 to 2:00 pm there are two panels taking place to compete for Sailor Moon fans’ time. John Stocker will join others in the “So Many Voices” panel in Plaza C while Linda Ballentine, Katie Griffin and Susan Roman will be doing the “Memories of the 80s” panel in Toronto Panels.

Saturday from 5:00 to 6:00 pm will be the “Sailormoon Voice Actors Q&A” in Toronto Panels. The guests are not mentioned by name in the schedule but I think we can take a guess at who might be in attendance.

Katie Griffin and Susan Roman to appear at Anime North May 24th to the 26th

Sailor Jupiter - Susan Roman

Anime North has announced two new guests Katie Griffin, the voice of Sailor Mars, and Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter. They will join Linda Ballantyne, the voice of Sailor Moon, and John Stocker, voice director for Sailor Moon, at this year’s convention which will be held in Toronto the weekend of May 24th to the 26th.

Susan Roman is a veteran voice actor with a ton of credits to her name. She provided the voice of Lita, Sailor Jupiter, for her entire time in the series making her the only actress to voice one of the main Sailor Scout for the entire length of the series.

Sailor Mars - Katie Griffin

Katie Griffin has also done a great deal of voice acting. We met up with her at Fan Expo last year. Check out that interview. She provided the voice of Raye, Sailor Mars, for all but 16 episodes of the series making the actress appearing in the most episodes of the show.

With all of these Sailor Moon actors at the same convention we will be in attendance and hope to see you there. Weekend passes are sold out but individual passes are still available for all days.

Interviews with Susan Roman and Vince Corazza at Anime Revolution

Vincent Corazza interview at Anime Revolution 2012

The Anime Revolution web site has posted a couple more great interviews from their convention where they had six Sailor Moon voice actors present to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary. First is an interview with Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter and the second is an interview with Vince Corazza who played Alan Granger and eventually Tuxedo Mask in the later two season. Vince gives a nice explanation of the rythmo-band technique which was used to dub Sailor Moon which made the lip synching match up perfectly to the video.

You can watch the interviews on the Anime Revolution web site. We’ve also embedded them below for your convenience.

Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Panel at Anime Revolution

Sailor Moon voice actor panel at Anime Revolution featuring Vince Corazza, Stephanie "Sugar" Beard, Ron Rubin, Terri Hawkes, Susan Roman and Katie Griffin

Last month at Anime Revolution in Vancouver there was a 20th Anniversary celebration including a panel featuring six of the cast members from the English dub. From left to right this panel includes Vince Corazza, voice of Tuxedo Mask, Stephanie “Sugar” Beard, voice of Rini, Ron Rubin, voice of Artemis, Terri Hawkes, voice of Sailor Moon, Susan Roman, voice of Sailor Jupiter and Katie Griffin, voice of Sailor Mars. The video is split into two parts. The quality isn’t perfect but the sound does come through pretty well so it’s well worth a listen.

Part 1 and Part 2 cover the entire panel. The third clip included below covered a half hour in the middle and is of higher quality. The voice actor portion begins 37 minutes into the first clip as it’s preceeded by some Karaoke and clips of many incarnations of Sailor Moon.

This past weekend at Anime Revolution in Vancouver there were six Sailor Moon voice actors in attendance. A fan recorded this panel which featured Katie Griffin, the voice of Sailor Mars, Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter and Vincent Corazza, the voice of Tuxedo Mask.

The sound isn’t excellent because of interference from another panel next door but regardless the content of the panel is something fans will find quite interesting.
