Fumio Osano mentions new “Complete Versions” of the Manga are coming

Fumio Osano tweet about the complete versions of the Sailor Moon manga

A Kanzenban or “Complete Version” of the Japanese Sailor Moon manga is in fact coming. A layout change will come with this printing which is likely to include colour pages not in previous releases. Sailor Moon’s editor Fumio Osano mentioned this on his twitter account recently. A translation appears below courtesy of the @OsabuP_English account:

Note: The aizoubon manga has a name change to kanzenban (complete version). The size + layout has changed too. More info in our next meeting

Since the 20th Anniversary event there has been talk of a new version of the Japanese manga in a different larger format. Numerous tentative release dates for this have come and gone. When new printings of the manga were released earlier this year it was not clear if these were in fact all we would get. It now appears that these were not the version we’d heard about but these Kanzenban versions are.

So what exactly is a “Kanzenban”? This term is used to describe special releases of a manga that are usually A5 sized which is 148x210mm or 8.5×5.8″ and will include all original chapter covers, colour pages and side stories. Many of the colour pages from the Sailor Moon or Sailor V manga were not included in any releases since their original inclusion in the magazines Run Run and Nakayoshi so this will be a real treat for completist fans. Original reports mentioned A4 sized comics which would have been double the size of the A5 size typical of Kanzenban releases.

English Sailor Moon manga vol. 9 - Sailor Pluto

The 9th volume of the new English release of the Sailor Moon manga was released today. This version features Sailor Pluto on the cover. You can purchase the book through the amazon link below to support this site.

This book covers acts 2 to 6 of the “Dream” arc, which is the equivalent to the Sailor Moon SuperS season of the anime. This focuses on the story of Pegasus/Helios. In the final chapter of this book we see the return of Sailors Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Saturn. Be sure to check it out!

Japanese reprinted manga is released without fanfare

Sailor Moon manga volume 1 - Japanese reprint

There have been a lot of rumblings about a reprint of the Sailor Moon manga that never came. Word from Naoko Takeuchi herself said it was coming by Thanksgiving. That came and went. Fumio Osano mentioned that it would be coming around the New Year and gave some details but no Amazon Japan listings ever accompanied that.

And then the books started showing up in stores. There’s really not much going on with these reprinted versions. As Fumio Osano had mentioned earlier it’s really just a touched up version of the original manga with improvements mostly relating to slight colour enhancements and digitized images. As I do not live in Japan I have not gotten my hands on these books myself but a few images of them have turned up online. The first image, as shown at the top of this article, was posted to instagram by user gracekansai shows the first volume with a new obi mentioning the 20th anniversary.

Osabu gives details about the new Japanese versions of the Sailor Moon manga

Osa-P wearing a Santa Claus hat

Details about the Japanese reprint of the Sailor Moon manga have been pretty vague or rather completely incorrect in the past. We had some confirmation from New York Comic Con that these rereleases would be out for Thanksgiving, a time which has long since come and gone with no manga in sight. Finally Fumio Osano, also known as Osabu or Osa-P, has posted some updates to his twitter account @osabu8 with details about the manga. Osabu’s tweets are also being translated by the @OsabuP_English account which is run by the Miss Dream site. Osabu has also been replying to some English fans over twitter, as they ask questions about the new anime.

There seems to be very little changed in these new versions. It’s mentioned that the covers will be digitized and have the colours tweeked to resemble the American prints. I imagine this will not entail much of a change as the Japanese and American prints have very similar looking colours. I’ve included a photo of both side by side below. Do you see much of a difference? Similar changes will be made to the colour pages which appear at the front of each volume as well as digital retouches being made to the colour and black and white pages. The Sailor V manga is also mentioned to be in scope for this release.

Sailor Moon portion of the Kondansha panel at New York Comic Con 2012

Kodansha panel Sailor Moon announcements at New York Comic Con 2012

A Sailor Moon fan has recorded a part of the Kodansha Comics USA panel from last weekend’s New York Comic Con which includes the portions relevant to Sailor Moon. The video embedded below has been cued up to when the Sailor Moon discussion begins.

This panel began with the announcmeent of a new Sailor Moon art book for 2013 that we previously discussed on the site. This art book is being put together in Japan and the details are sparse. The Sailor Moon manga box set was then mentioned. These are not new versions of the books, though typos and errors are corrected with reprints so some minor issues may be corrected in these. This followed with a reading of a letter from Naoko Takeuchi to American fans.

Thanks to Senshi_chan for recording the video.

Kodansha announces a Sailor Moon art book at New York Comic Con

Sailor Moon art books announced at Kodansha comics USA panel at NYCC 2012

Today was the Kodansha Comics USA panel at New York Comic Con. The big announcement they had was that there would be a new Sailor Moon art book released in the US as well as in six other countries in 2013. This will not be a translation of any of the existing art books but rather a compilation taking art from all of the existing books that will also include some previously unpublished material. There were originally seven Sailor Moon art books in Japan which collected art from the manga. This includes volumes I through V, the materials collection and the Infinity art book. None of the existing art books have ever been published in North America.

The panel also included a message from Naoko Takeuchi herself. She confirmed that the box set of the new versions of the Sailor Moon manga will be released for Thanksgiving, November 20th. This message as well as the art book press release can be found below along with pictures of some of the Kodansha booth swag.

Sailor Moon manga book 1-6 box set coming in November

Sailor Moon Manga Volumes 1-6 Box Set

A box set collecting the English versions of the first six books of Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon manga will go on sale November 20th. This set is already up for pre-order on Amazon. This set was first made known when it went up for pre-order on Right Stuf’s web site a few days ago. This was confirmed by Kodansha on Twitter. The box art is only now being made available. It looks like a sheet of cards, bookmarks or stickers comes with the set. The books themselves look like the ones we already have judging by the spines.

The box art, of which we can only see one side, is an image of Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon originally used as the cover of the second volume of the manga. Does the first volume cover appear on the other side which we can’t see?
