Sailor Moon Crystal Original Soundtrack Review

Sailor Moon Crystal Original Soundtracks - Cover

The Sailor Moon Crystal Original Soundtrack was released in Japan on December 24th. Now that I’ve had a chance to listen to it a couple of times I’m ready to share my thoughts. The CD contains mainly instrumental background music from the show by Yasuharu Takanashi, though it also includes the TV sized opening and closing themes Moon Pride and Gekkou (Moonbow) by Momoiro Clover Z. The first CD has 30 tracks and the second has 24. A full track listing can found on the official Sailor Moon site with a rough translation in my last post about the soundtrack.

The two CD set is not that expensive, costing about $25 US plus shipping which is pretty good for a Japanese release. You can get it from retailers such as Amazon Japan, CD Japan or YesAsia. If you’re unwilling to pay this modest cost to support the show, I’m sure you can find a site where you can download the soundtrack.

Sailor Moon Crystal Original Soundtracks - Disk 1

The music included covers the full first years of Sailor Moon Crystal which includes the 13 episodes which are already available, covering the Dark Kingdom story arc, as well as the upcoming Black Moon Clan story arc. This means there are a number of tracks here which have not been heard on the show before. While it may be obvious that some tracks, such as “Black Lady”, “The Gate of Time” or “Sailor Chibi Moon’s Theme” may be new there are other tracks in here which for whatever reason have not been heard before.

Sailor Moon Crystal Original Soundtracks - Disk 2

It’s difficult for me to know for sure, since I’m really going by ear and memory, but of the tracks there are a number which I don’t believe had been included in the show. Mainly the themes for all Sailor Guardians but Sailor Moon seem completely new. Why Sailor Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus did not use their themes in their premier episodes isn’t something I pretend to understand. Perhaps these tracks were simply written later in the life of the series of maybe there was a decision not to use them. Similarly all but Usagi and Ami’s themes didn’t seem familiar to me. Ami’s theme was heard in her first episode but I don’t believe Rei, Makoto or Minako’s themes had been heard before. For the most part the rest of the tracks are some that have been heard before.

Sailor Moon Crystal Original Soundtracks - Insert pages 9 and 10

The insert is pretty lacklustre with the pages inside being printed only in black and white. This includes a track listing, information about the artist Yasuhara Takanashi including an interview and a couple of pictures. I don’t read Japanese but I have included photos of all pages at the bottom of the post. Otherwise the packaging is simple but appealing, with images of the Moon and the Earth on the CDs themselves.

The music in the show is generally enjoyable, and if you’ve seen the show you probably have a decent idea of what that music is like. The CD set is quite cheap, so I would recommend it to fans of the show. As this covers all music from the first year there’s no concern of having this become obsolete and there being another CD set coming out any time soon.

Keep reading for more photos of the CD and included black and white booklet.

Sailor Jupiter Pullip doll announced

Sailor Jupiter Pullip Doll

The Sailor Jupiter Pullip doll has been revealed on the Sailor Moon official site. The doll follows Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus and Princess Serenity which have already been released. Why do we keep getting Sailor Venus products before Sailor Jupiter products despite Sailor Jupiter being the first to appear in the manga and anime? Not sure. Maybe it has something to do with Sailor V or character popularity.

Pullip dolls are high quality oddly proportioned dolls with large heads and eyes. This one will retail for 16,000 yen, about $135 US. It’s expected to sell for the same amount as the dolls which have already been released. The Bandai Premium exclusive version will be more expensive and, based on the other releases, will likely come with Makoto’s school uniform. We’ll share photos of that exclusive once they are revealed.

The Sailor Moon Crystal Original Soundtrack will be released December 24th

Sailor Moon Crystal Original Soundtracks

A Sailor Moon Crystal soundtrack will be released on December 24th in Japan. This soundtrack will feature background music from the entire first year of the Sailor Moon Crystal anime. This two disk set will include the Dark Kingdom story arc which will soon be completing as well as the Black Moon Clan story arc, sometimes referred to as the second season, which will begin in January 2015. The track information given on the Sailor Moon official site as well as the Evil Line Records site clearly shows it spanning until the end of the Black Moon Clan arc with 2nd disk titles including “Sad Black Lady” and “Through the Gate of Time”.

The cover art is included above. It includes Prince Endymion, Princess Serenity and Luna in a stained glass window style. You can order the CD from online retailers such as Amazon Japan, CD Japan or YesAsia. MSRP is 3000 yen, about $25 US.

As I have mentioned many times I do not speak Japanese but here is what I can piece together from the track listing with the help of Google Translate. I tried to make sense of the names but some of them are total guesses based on some broken English because translation software is impressive but we’re still in 2014.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 2 review

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 2 - Inside

The latest volume of Sailor Moon Crystal was released on Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray on November 12th (Amazon Japan, CD Japan, JList, YesAsia) while the regular edition Blu-Ray (Amazon Japan, CD Japan, YesAsia) and DVD (Amazon Japan, CD Japan, YesAsia) will be released on December 10th. This release, like the first one, only included two episodes. This month we have Act 3, Rei – Sailor Mars, and Act 4, Masquerade Dance Party. To celebrate Sailor Mars’s appearance we have Sailor Mercury on the cover and a Sailor Mercury charm included. Each Deluxe Limited Edition set comes in a fancy box with a special book and a charm to add to the charm bracelet which was included with vol. 1. This charm is of Sailor Mercury’s transformation pen.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 2 - Sailor Mercury Charm

The disk itself is similar to the first one. Episodes are included in HD with great image quality. Some of the scenes which originally had some pretty bad animation have been touched up. The Blu-Ray is region A, which will play in a North American Blu-Ray player, however the audio is in Japanese and there are no English subtitles. An audio commentary is included, also in Japanese, so I don’t have any real details on what they talk about!

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 2 - Box

The box also comes with a special 24 page book. This includes a summary and images for act 3 and 4, interviews with Atsutoshi Umezawa, executive producer for Sailor Moon Crystal, and Hisako Kanemoto, the voice actress for Sailor Mercury, character art for Sailor Mercury and other characters, backgrounds and a special page by Osabu, Fumio Osano, editor of Sailor Moon.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 2 - Book - Act 3 - Rei - Sailor Mars

The set is expensive for only including two episodes, but has a lot of cool extras. It may be of interest to collectors but if you’re just looking to watch the show, you may want to stick with the free and totally legal streaming version.

Keep reading for more images from this set including photos of all pages of the included book.

Sailor Mars Pullip Doll announced

Sailor Mars Pullip Doll

The latest Sailor Moon Pullip doll has been announced. Next in this line of dolls is Sailor Mars! Previously released were Sailor Moon, Mercury and Venus and Princess Serenity. Sailor Mercury and Venus both included civilian school uniforms as their Bandai exclusive bonus. No specifics have been announced about Sailor Mars but it would make sense that she would also come with a school uniform when ordered from Premium Bandai. Sailor Moon came with Luna but as Sailor Venus did not come with Artemis it seems unlikely that Phobos and Deimos will be included as exclusive bonuses.

Pullip dolls are high quality very expensive dolls with disproportionally large heads and eyes. Though there is no specific release date or price noted at this time, it can be expected to sell for $150 for the regular version and $180 for the Premium Bandai exclusive version.

Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Chibi Moon S. H. Figuarts, Sailor Moon Crystal Figuarts Zero and more figures revealed at Tamashi Nations 2014

Sailor Chibi Moon S. H. Figuarts

A ton of new Sailor Moon figures were revealed at this past weekend’s Tamashii Nations 2014 event in Tokyo. We have Sailor Chibi Moon and Tuxedo Mask S. H. Figuarts figures, a new line of Figuarts Zero figures in a Sailor Moon Crystal style and super deformed Tamashii Buddies for the main five Sailor Guardians.

Original anime colour Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask S. H. Figuarts figures

We already knew we were expecting to see a Tuxedo Mask S. H. Figuarts figure so that was no real surprise, but Sailor Chibi Moon was news! Also on display is the original anime colours Sailor Moon. The S. H. Figuarts Sailor Moon figure had a slightly different colour palette, including a more pink colour than her original red, but this one is more what fans of the 1992 Sailor Moon anime are used to. S. H. Figuarts figures are high quality highly posable figures. These new S. H. Figuarts figures will likely cost about the same as the other ones that have been released, about $40 to $50 US. What kind of accessories will be included with these figures? We can only speculate, so here we go. The Tuxedo Mask shown has neither a cape or a rose, which would be obvious additions. Sailor Chibi Moon may include her Pink Moon Stick and Luna P. Sailor Pluto remains the only Sailor Guardian not to get an S. H. Figuarts figure as we’re now moving on to other characters. Should we expect to get Chibi Chibi, Ikuko Mama, Shingo and Red Buttler S. H. Figuarts before we see her?

Sailor Moon Crystal Sailor Moon Figuarts Zero

The other big revelation was the new line of Sailor Moon Crystal Figuarts Zero figures. The original Sailor Moon Figuarts Zero line is from Sailor Moon R but these ones are from the new Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Moon Crystal, and have a whole other level of detail to them. I wasn’t terribly impressed with what the Sailor Moon R Figuarts Zero figures had to offer at their price point, but I find these new ones to be quite nice. The Figuarts Zero line are not posable. They are stationary small statuettes. If pricing is similar to the other Sailor Moon Figuarts Zero figures they should cost somewhere in the range of $80 to $90 US.

Sailor Moon Crystal Sailor Mercury Figuarts Zero

Also revealed were more Tamashii Buddies, small non posable super deformed figures. These tiny figures are just 9 cm tall, about 3.5″. Announced to date are Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus. Though no prices are given these slightly more affordable figures tend to sell for about $15 US.

Tuxedo Mask S. H. Figuarts figure to be revealed next weekend

Sailor Moon episode 1 - Tuxedo Mask

Next weekend, October 31st to November 2nd, is the Tamashii Nations 2014 event where a number of Bandai’s Tamashii Nations Figuarts and PROPLICA items will be revealed. A news post on the official Sailor Moon site has mentioned that a Tuxedo Mask S. H. Figuarts figure is set to be revealed! S. H. Figuarts includes high quality highly posable figures. All previous S. H. Figuarts figures in this series have been Sailor Guardians because in the bizarro world that is Sailor Moon it’s actually rare to get figures of male characters. Keep checking this site for photos of this new figure as they are released in the next week.

Since a number of new PROPLICA items will also be released it’s possible another Sailor Moon PROPLICA item will be announced. Since the Moon Stick and Cutie Moon Rod have already been released we are overdue to see the Spiral Heart Moon Rod, Sailor Moon’s attack item from the Sailor Moon S season of the anime and the Infinity story arc of the manga.

Speaking of Tuxedo Mask. You know who likes him? Sailor Pluto. Did her Figuarts figure get lost in the planet controversy?

Box art for the Sailor Moon Crystal vol. 2 Blu-Ray

Sailor Moon Crystal Blu-Ray vol. 2 Deluxe Limited Edition box

The box art for the second volume of the Sailor Moon Crystal Blu-Ray Deluxe Limited Edition has been released. This set looks a lot like the first set which we recently reviewed. The episodes included on this disk are act 3, Rei – Sailor Mars, and act 4, Masquerade Dance Party. Sailor Mercury appears on the cover despite first appearing in act 2. We will likely see Sailor Mars on the next set.

Sailor Moon Crystal Blu-Ray vol. 2 Deluxe Limited Edition box - Sailor Mercury's transformation item charm

This set also includes a charm to go with the charm bracelet included in the volume 1 Blu-Ray box. This charm is of Sailor Mercury’s transformation item. Another 24 page colour booklet will be included with this set. The animation will be cleaned up to fix mistakes or awkwardly drawn scenes from the streaming version, and will include audio commentaries. This Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray will be released on November 12th and can be preordered from Amazon Japan, CD Japan, JList and YesAsia. If you are patient, don’t care about swag and want to save a bit of money you can wait until December 10th to get the regular edition Blu-Ray (Amazon Japan, CD Japan, YesAsia) or the DVD (Amazon Japan, CD Japan, YesAsia). These is a Japanese release with no English audio or subtitles. The Blu-Ray disk will play in North American region A Blu-Ray players or PlayStation 3s though the DVDs are region 2 which will not play in a North American region 1 DVD player.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray review

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 1

The first volume of the Sailor Moon Crystal DVD and Blu-Ray was released on October 15th. There are a few versions of this release at different price points. I ordered the Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray version. This release only contains two episodes of the series, act 1 and 2, showing us the introduction of Usagi and Ami. You can order the volume 1 deluxe limited edition Blu-Ray (Amazon Japan, CD Japan), regular edition Blu-ray (Amazon Japan, CD Japan) or DVD (Amazon Japan, CD Japan). The deluxe limited edition has a lot included, but at 5994 yen (about $53 US) it’s a hefty price tag for only two episodes. These are Japanese discs. The Blu-Rays are region A meaning they will play in a North American Blu-Ray player or PS3, but there are no English subtitle or audio tracks.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 1 - Moon Stick charm and bracelet

The packaging is impressive. The first thing you will notice when opening to box is that it plays the Moon Pride theme song. Inside are the Moon Stick charm and charm bracelet. Should you choose to continue to spend large amounts of money on the limited edition Blu-Rays you will be able to collect the other 12 charms.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 1 - Booklet cover

Also included are two books. The first includes art from the show, episode summaries and interviews with Munehisa Sakai, director, and Kotono Mitsuishi, the voice of Sailor Moon. The second is a book of storyboards of the opening and ending themes for the series.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 1 - Opening storyboards

There is not a ton to the Blu-Ray itself. As mentioned there are only two episodes, which auto play when the Blu-Ray is started. As we previously mentioned there are some scenes which have been reanimated since the original streaming version was released. This includes the changes to the intro. For example, Queen Serenity has white hair in the intro instead of being blonde like in the intro for the first two streaming episodes. These changes are minor and cosmetic. It doesn`t fundamentally change the experience of watching the show. Overall the video quality is quite good, which is not surprising as the Crunchyroll HD feeds were comparable. The disc has some special features. Mainly the textless opening and ending themes. There are also two audio commentaries, though as they are in Japanese I did not find much use in listening to them.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 1 - Box

Overall this set is expensive and while there are a decent amount of cool knick knacks, only including two episodes lowers the value. If you’re a collector or completist, it may be worth picking up, but if you’re just looking to watch the show, the streaming versions are perfectly acceptable. It’s quite likely there will be an eventual North American Blu-Ray release with English audio and subtitles. Fans who don’t like to watch their anime raw may prefer to wait for such a release. If you’re looking to watch the updated animation with English subtitles, you can download them from Sailor Moon Center. As of posting this article only episode 1 has been released (720p, 1080p), but episode two should follow shortly.

Sailor Moon Crystal Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-Ray vol. 1 - Box
