A Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Tribute Album will be released January 29th

Well over a year into the 20th anniversary celebration a new Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary tribute album has been announced. This album will be released on January 29th 2014 for a price of 3000 yen, roughly $30 US. The album will have a total of 10 tracks with three of the artists already announced. The date of January coincides with the latest news of when the new Anime wil be released, though this date may be coincidental. Momoiro Clover Z, who will be performing the theme song for the upcoming new Sailor Moon anime, will be doing a track. It’s unclear at this point if the track on the CD will be the new theme song or not. As Momoiro Clover Z have performed Moonlight Densetsu, the original Sailor Moon anime theme song, in concert a number of times already it’s also a possibility that this cover will be their track on the CD. The two other artists which have been named to date are Mitsuko Horie and Shoko Nakagawa.

More news about the new Sailor Moon Anime may be coming this Sunday

Usagi tired

This Sunday, August 4th, there will be a live web video event on the Niconico site. This was announced on the official Sailor Moon site. This event is going to be similar to last year’s event where the anime was first announced. They will be discussing the new Sailor Moon anime, the upcoming musical and other new merchandise. The update on the musical will include a performance by the cast. We’re certainly hoping to get some concrete information about the new anime since very little has been officially announced since last year’s event. The event will occur at 5pm local time in Japan which is 4am Sunday morning here in Norther America’s Easter Standard Time zone.

If you are interested in following the show live I would suggest heading over to the Miss Dream web site. They will have a live stream of the show with live translations over twitter. In addition once complete they plan on subbing it for all to enjoy. It was following Miss Dream’s twitter account that I first learned about the new anime moments after it had been announced last year.

We’ll be sure to update this site with any relevant information as it comes in. Posting on the site might not be my top priority at 4 or 5 in the morning on a Sunday but I will strive to share information as it is relevant and urgent as time permits. Keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook pages for information that’s breaking and not yet posted to the blog. At the very least I will be retweeting and posting short updates about anything important on those social media sites. As always we encourage our readers to join the conversation on those pages.

Kodansha Comics press release about the live event

Kodansha Comics logo

Kodansha Comics USA has posted this press release about the 20th anniversary show that took play last Friday, July 6th. Much of the information has already been covered on this site but a few new bits of information were included.

A new 10 volume collector’s edition of the Sailor Moon and Codename: Sailor V manga are going to be released in Japan. It’s mentioned that these will be faithful reproductions including the colour pages. Does this mean the content will be the original art rather than the slightly modified versions from the 2003 rerelease that is currently being released in North America? We can only hope so!

An anime memorial DVD collection, each featuring a different character, will be released. These were at one point though to be the Sailor Moon memorials which exist on VHS and laser disc, but those each focused on a season of the show, so this appears to be something new.

Sailor Moon Memorial laser discs

The character memorials will not be these ones, but may be something similar

Both the manga and DVD collections will be released one volume at a time on a monthly schedule beginning in October 2012.

Check out the full press release below.

Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary live show - Kotono Mitsuishi, Toru Furuya and Fumio Osano

Last Friday we were happy to share with you the news of the new Sailor Moon anime series set to air in the summer of 2013. This news was announced in a 20th anniversary live show which has now been translated by the Sailor Moon fan subbing web site Miss Dream. We’ve included the video below. Here are the important facts about the new show! It will be an all new anime series starting in 2013. Kotono Mitsuishi and Toru Furuya will be reprising their roles as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask. Momoiro Clover Z will be doing the theme song but unlike we mentioned in our previous news item it does not seem that the song they performed during this event will be the theme song. After the video we’ll be sharing more thoughts on the video, what we saw and why Toru Furaya is a dirty, dirty liar!

A big thanks to the staff at Miss Dream for putting this together. They have also expressed their intentions to fan sub the series as it airs.

The Sailor Moon Anime turns 20 today

Luna trying to motivate a reluctant Usagi in Sailor Moon

How times flies. 20 years ago today, on March 7th 1992, the first episode of Sailor Moon aired in Japan. 5 years ago I wrote this short article commemorating 15 years. Not a ton has changed in the past 5 years. The manga is being released again and a lot of merchandise has come out in the past few months but the rights issues with this now classic 20 year old anime series remain the same. You just can’t walk into a store and buy the greatest anime series of all time in North America.

Sailor Moon transforming

Take a moment to think back on the show, an maybe watch an episode or two.
