Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Memorial Tribute Album Review

Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Tribute Album - Cover

The Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Memorial Tribute Album was finally release on January 29th. I got my copy a couple of weeks ago and have been quite happy with it. I would encourage readers to buy a copy for themselves from sites such as Amazon Japan, CD Japan or JList. Alternatively you can download the album illegally from the Miss Dream web site.

Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Tribute Album - Back

This album, as we have mentioned before, includes covers of popular Sailor Moon songs by a variety of Japanese musical artists. We spoke a lot about who these bands were in earlier posts about this album. I generally enjoyed the album quite a bit. It filled me with nostalgia for these famous songs which I’ve listened to countless times over the years but still offered something new to appreciate with the different takes all of these artists have on these songs which are now up to 20 years old. Below I will include brief thoughts on each of the tracks.

A Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Tribute Album will be released January 29th

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Tribute Album cover art

Well over a year into the 20th anniversary celebration a new Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary tribute album has been announced. This album will be released on January 29th 2014 for a price of 3000 yen, roughly $30 US. The album will have a total of 10 tracks with three of the artists already announced. The date of January coincides with the latest news of when the new Anime wil be released, though this date may be coincidental. Momoiro Clover Z, who will be performing the theme song for the upcoming new Sailor Moon anime, will be doing a track. It’s unclear at this point if the track on the CD will be the new theme song or not. As Momoiro Clover Z have performed Moonlight Densetsu, the original Sailor Moon anime theme song, in concert a number of times already it’s also a possibility that this cover will be their track on the CD. The two other artists which have been named to date are Mitsuko Horie and Shoko Nakagawa.

Momoiro Clover Z reenact the Sailor Moon S opening

Momoiro Clover Z - Sailor Moon S intro - Sailor Team

Unfortunately today’s appearance of Momoiro Clover Z on Japanese TV show Bakusho Show Battle did not have them performing the theme song to the new Sailor Moon 2013 anime as we previously reported. This was not an April fool’s joke but rather a misunderstood translation of the Japanese announcement. Apologies if we got your hopes up.

What we did get is a shot for shot remake of the opening of the Sailor Moon S season of the anime in which Momoiro Clover Z sing Moonlight Densetsu. You can watch the full clip below, assuming this clip does not get pulled as others have. You can compare their version to the actual Sailor Moon S opening being shown on the lower right corner of the screen.

Bakusho Show Battle is a Japanese TV show in which bands square off against each other doing a parody of a popular intro. You can find out more about this episode from Yahoo! Japan’s episode guide.

Momoiro Clover Z to reveal the new Sailor Moon theme song April 4th

Momoiro Clover Z dressed as Sailor Moon characters

Today is April Fools’ Day which means nothing on the Internet can be trusted. With that in mind I am sharing with you some information from some sites in Japan dated March 25th, but that were brought to my attention on April 1st Japanese time.

April 4th Update: Momoiro Clover Z did not perform the new theme song on April 4th but instead did a reenactment of the Sailor Moon S intro.

The news as reported by Momoiro Clover Z blog Momoclomatome and natalie.mu states that this coming Thursday, April 4th 2013, Momoiro Clover Z will be performing the theme song for the new 2013 Sailor Moon anime.

Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Live Show - Momoiro Clover Z

We were previously informed last summer during the 20th Anniversary event that the all girl colour coordinated J-Pop group Momoiro Clover Z would in fact be the group to perform the theme song for the new Sailor Moon anime set to begin airing this summer. The group then went on to perform a song Otome Sensou. Some fans took this performance as an indication that this would be the theme song but there has been no strong evidence to suggest this is the case. The band then performed the classic Sailor Moon anime theme song Moonlight Densetsu which also seems unlikely to be the theme song for the new anime.

Fans have been looking forward to any new information about this show for months. Until now Fumio Osano’s occasional twitter updates are all we’ve had to go on and those serve to tell us little more than that the show is still coming but that he can’t tell us anything about it. Let’s hope this news is reliable and that this will be the first in a series of updates about this new anime that we’ve all been waiting for.

Thanks to Twitter user @Sailormoon_UK for bringing this news to the attention of the Sailor Moon fandom.

Sailor Moon in Bon Jovi’s “These Days” music video

Bon Jovi - "These Days" Sailor Moon machine

Here’s a really old Sailor Moon reference that I wasn’t aware of until just recently. Sailor Moon makes an appearance in Jon Bovi’s 1996 music video for the song “These Days”. At one point the song shows a quick couple of seconds of Japan and at that point an image of some sort of Sailor Moon S machine is shown. I’m not sure what this is, pachinko, slot machine, pinball machine? My searches didn’t turn up anything particular so if you have an idea of what it could be, drop us a line.

This reminded me of another bizarre music reference to Sailor Moon in the CD inserts for U2’s “Best of 1990-2000″ CD release. This picture of the band in front of a large Sailor Moon R The Movie poster was likely taken during their 1992-1993 Zoo TV tour which was going on while Sailor Moon R was in theatres.

Momoiro Clover Z’s new song about Furby

Momoiro Clover Z - Furby commercial

Momoiro Clover Z, the band that will be performing the theme song for the new 2013 Sailor Moon anime, are currently promoting the new line of Furby toys! That’s right, Furby’s back! The new Furby toys are actually pretty amazing. I picked one up last week and they can do all kinds of awesome things and now have an iOS app that can interact with them to feed them, translate and stuff.

So basically the band Momoiro Clover Z has released a commercial and music video all about Furby in which they are dressed up like Furbies and they … well sing and dance! These girls are no strangers to elaborate colourful costumes, and this excuse seems as good as any to get colour coordinated and have some fun.

Here’s their latest music video “Wee-Tee-Wee-Tee” which according to my Furbish dictionary means “Sing Sing”. Is this the first song title to be in Furbish? I certainly hope so!

How do you like the song?
