The first 10 episodes of the original Sailor Moon anime are now on the official Sailor Moon YouTube channel which is great news for fans living in Japan, Somalialand and Macedonia

Sailor Moon Episode 01 on YouTube - Tuxedo Mask can't solve anything with only kale

“me I can’t solve anything with only kale that can’t chew tuxedo”

As a promotion for the upcoming Sailor Moon Eternal movie, which is still scheduled to be released in theatres in Japan on September 11th, 10 episodes of the original Sailor Moon anime will be released every week on the official Sailor Moon YouTube channel from now until late July. This will mean that fans will have the opportunity to watch up to the end of Sailor Moon S. This is being promoted mainly to fans living in Japan who can speak Japanese.

Video unavailable outside of Japan, Somalialand and Macedonia

Originally these videos were open to fans worldwide, which meant anyone could watch them, but as of Friday morning I can no longer watch these videos. Looking into it a bit it seems the videos are only available to view in Japan, Somalialand and Macedonia. If anyone knows of a reliable and free way to access region restricted videos please leave a comment with details!

Sailor Moon Episode 01 on YouTube - Sailor Moon says "Yeah yeah yeah punishment"

“Yeah yeah yeah punishment”

There are certainly no English subtitles by default but YouTube does allow for automatic closed captions. While the videos were still viewable globally I did this for episode 1. If you’re a fan in Japan, Somalialand or Macedonia, or are otherwise able to load these videos I would suggest trying this out for a laugh! Click on the “Settings” gear on the bottom right of the video. Chose “Subtitles/CC” and then “Japanese (Auto Generated)”. Now click back through to “Subtitles/CC” and click on “Auto-translate” and scroll down to your language of choice such as “English”. I’ve included a few choice quotes in this post.

Sailor Moon Episode 01 on YouTube - Luna talks about being mischievous for 50,000 years

It was 50,000 years since I was mischievous, but thanks to you, I went and chose Paisley.

No doubt this is actually a pretty terrible way to watch a show and since most people will need to do sketchy things to do it, why bother? There are many ways better and easier ways in which a person can watch Sailor Moon these days. Fans can of course buy the series on DVD, Blu-Ray or digitally and watch it either in English or in Japanese with English subtitles. Americans with a Hulu subscription can stream the series on that service. The first four seasons are available to watch dubbed and subbed though Sailor Stars is currently only available in Japanese with English subtitles. Americans can watch those same episodes for free on Viz’s web site. Canadians can watch subtitled episodes for free on TubiTV. The service has ads but it is free to watch.

Sailor Moon Episode 01 on YouTube - Tuxedo Mask things that's awesome

Awesome sailor moon remember tonight

So is there any reason to watch these episodes? The video quality is pretty good! The best you’ll get for free at least. I don’t know if this is using the same source material as the Japanese Blu-Rays. They aren’t quite as nice, perhaps due to being compressed when uploaded, but I find it looks better than the Viz Blu-Ray releases. Don’t take my word for it though. Check out these screenshots for comparison. I’ll add a few more at the end of the post.

Here’s the schedule for which episodes will be released each week. New episodes will be posted on Fridays though because of time zones this ends up being a day earlier in North America. The date range suggests that episodes will only be hosted for a week and then removed, but I’m not certain about that. The Japanese site restarts episode numbers for each season which is a bit odd as Japanese sources usually use the full episode number. I’ve included both for reference.

April 24th to April 30th – Sailor Moon 1 to 10
May 1st to May 7th – Sailor Moon 11 to 20
May 8th to May 14th – Sailor Moon 21 to 30
May 15th to May 21st – Sailor Moon 31 to 40
May 22nd to May 28th – Sailor Moon 41 to 46 and Sailor Moon R 47 to 50 (1 to 4)
May 29th to June 4th – Sailor Moon R 51 to 60 (5 to 14)
June 5th to June 11th – Sailor Moon R 61 to 70 (15 to 24)
June 12th to June 18th – Sailor Moon R 71 to 80 (25 to 34)
June 19th to June 25th – Sailor Moon R 81 to 89 (35 to 43) and Sailor Moon S 90 (1)
June 26th to July 2nd – Sailor Moon S 91 to 100 (2 to 11)
July 3rd to July 9th – Sailor Moon S 101 to 110 (12 to 21)
July 10th to July 16th – Sailor Moon S 111 to 120 (22 to 31)
July 17th to July 23rd – Sailor Moon S 121 to 127 (32 to 38)

Supposedly the reason for only releasing the first three seasons is because the movie is a retelling of the Dream arc of the manga which sequentially would follow Sailor Moon S, but since Sailor Moon Crystal is not at all in continuity with the original Sailor Moon anime this seems a bit odd! The new trailer for the Sailor Moon Eternal film is included at the start of every episode which is posted to YouTube.

If you are able to get these videos to load, here are some links to the individual episodes for convenience:

An English fan translation of the Sailor Moon PC Engine or TurboGrafx-16 video game has been released

Pretty Solder Sailor Moon - PC Engine - Title Screen

English fans will finally have the chance to play a Sailor Moon video game which was previously only available in Japanese. The game is Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon for the PC-Engine Super CD-ROM system known as the Turbografx-CD in North America. Since the game was only ever released in Japan it is usually referred to simply as a PC Engine game. The game was translated by a group of fans and released by Supper. You can read about the translation and download the patch on the Romhacking.net web site.

Pretty Solder Sailor Moon - PC Engine - Rei

So what is this game about? The Romhacking page describes it as a visual novel, a type of game which is common in Japan but not as much in North America. The story takes place during the Sailor Moon R season of the anime between the Makaiju and Black Moon story arcs, which would be between Sailor Moon R episodes 59 and 60. That said it is not branded as a Sailor Moon R game but just as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. The characters mostly seem to be those from the first season of the anime. The intro features Nephrite and the DD Girls.

Pretty Solder Sailor Moon - PC Engine - Cover

I’ve played a short bit of the game and as far as I can tell you are given many dialog options which all basically end up telling the same story. The player chooses one of the main five characters who progress through the same story from a different point of view. There are animation and voice clips throughout the game featuring art in a very similar style to the anime. The voice work is provided by the voice actors from the 90s anime series! This version keeps the Japanese audio but translates all written dialogue to English. This makes the game much more accessible to English speaking fans who would not have gotten much out of playing this title in its original form.

Pretty Solder Sailor Moon - PC Engine - Umino

So how does one download and play this game? The Romhacking web site does not actually include a playable version of the game. What is included is a software package which can be run on the original Japanese version of the game to modify it to run in English. The site is unable to tell you where to find the original Japanese game because that would constitute piracy! If you look around the Internet you may find a web site which would have this file.

Pretty Solder Sailor Moon - PC Engine - Minako as Artemis

I’m used to patching single rom files with a patch file but since this is a CD based game you’ll need to patch a CD image, which can come in many formats. The readme file that comes with the download will explain various options. Luckily the file I had could be patched with the first listed option “A. Directly patch the Redump-verified BIN or IMG image”. I have a Mac which always makes these things a bit difficult but I had no problem running the included DeltaPatcher.exe program with Wine. I then ran into a couple of problems. First I renamed my files which is a bad idea when using .cue and .bin files so I needed to change the file name in my .cue file. After that I realized that I needed a bios file to run a PC Engine CD game. Once again this is a file which one might find on certain web sites which host questionable software. Where you store this file will depend on the specific emulator you use. The readme file mentions this.

Pretty Solder Sailor Moon - PC Engine - Choose a character

What emulator who wish to use will depend on what device you wish to play the game on. MagicEngine seems to be a popular option for those with a Windows PC. I was able to get the game working on RetroPie, emulation software which runs on a Raspberry Pi, and on my hacked 3DS using TemperPCE.

Pretty Solder Sailor Moon - PC Engine - Chibi Sailor Mars

Here are Sailor Moon News we don’t generally endorse piracy of video games and other content. That said, the ethical concerns over such things usually relate to loss of potential revenue for the creator of that original content. While we always suggest you support the show by buying legitimate releases when possible, it is unlikely that the hard working people at Banpresto, now Bandai Spirits, will be losing any revenue over a handful of English speaking Sailor Moon fans playing a pirated copy of a game which was released in 1994. There isn’t really a way to buy this game and have that money get to the pockets of the legitimate rights holders in 2020.

Did you try this game? Did you have any trouble getting it to work? Let us know what platform you’re playing it on and what you think of the game!

Thanks to Dan Bednarski and Miss Dream on Twitter for bringing this news to my attention!

Sailor Moon R The Movie is now available to stream for free on Crunchyroll

Sailor Moon R The Movie on Crunchyroll

Viz Media has announced that it is making a distribution deal with the online streaming service Crunchyroll. This deal includes Sailor Moon R The Movie, which is available to stream for the first time in Japanese with English subtitles or dubbed in English on the service. The original Sailor Moon anime currently streams on Hulu while Sailor Moon Crystal is available to stream on Crunchyroll. This is currently the only part of the original Sailor Moon anime on Crunchyroll. Will this change in the future?

Sailor Moon R The Movie Blu-Ray - Princess Serenity

The advantage of Crunchyroll over Hulu is that the content is finally available to Canadians. Hulu is region blocked outside of the United States. The subtitled version of the original Sailor Moon anime is available on TubiTV but this does not include the dubbed episodes which you can find on Hulu.

Sailor Moon R The Movie Blu-Ray - Make Up! Sailor Guardians

The Make Up! Sailor Guardians special which played with Sailor Moon R The Movie in theatres is not available on Crunchyroll. Fans looking to watch that special will need to check out the DVD or Blu-Ray version of the film. It remains to be seen if the other films, Sailor Moon S The Movie and Sailor Moon SuperS: The Nine Sailor Guardians Unite! Miracle of the Black Dream Hole, will be released on the streaming service in the future.

Don’t want to watch a movie for free but prefer physical media? Then why not check out the Blu-Ray versions of the Sailor Moon films using the Amazon links below.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 is out on home video today!

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 - Blu-Ray cover

Today is the day! Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 is now available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray, which means the entire original Sailor Moon anime, with Viz’s new English dub, is now out! Fans have been waiting to see the final season of Sailor Moon dubbed into English since the 1990s but after Sailor Moon S and SuperS were dubbed, the final season never followed! The set is now available to purchase in stores and online. Fans looking to buy it from Amazon can do so using the links below.

Have you gotten your copy yet? Did any of you wait until now to watch the fifth and final season? What did you think of the final episodes? If you’re looking to pick up any of the earlier sets you can support the site by ordering them from Amazon using these links.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 is now available on Amazon Prime Video

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 on Amazon Prime Video

Yesterday we reported that a number of online retailers were offering Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 as a digital download but that it was not available on Amazon Prime Video. Though it was not listed along with the rest of the series, the final 17 episodes of the season are in fact listed on the site. Fans looking to buy these digitally from Amazon Prime Video can support the site by using the link below.

I don’t believe this is a new addition, but simply something I didn’t notice previously. When one looks at the Amazon Prime Video page for Sailor Moon it only lists up to season 501, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 1. This is what I originally looked at to try to find if the new episodes were available. Part 2 is listed on a totally different page which is likely why I hadn’t seen it.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2

For those who’ve gotten the digital version, what do you think? If you’re still looking to buy the physical release on November 12th you can support the site by pre-ordering it using the links below.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 is now available to download digitally from iTunes, Google Play, the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 on iTunes

The physical release of Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 is less than two weeks away which means the series is now available to purchase digitally from a number of online retailers. The series is available to purchase separately for the English dubbed episodes or in Japanese with English subtitles. The retailers currently offering the series are iTunes, the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store and Google Play. Strangely absent is Amazon Prime Video who had Part 1 up for sale two weeks before that set was released physically. The Amazon Video page for Sailor Moon does not include these final 17 episodes of the series.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars episode 200 - Sailor Moon

With these episodes now available the entire Sailor Moon series is available in English for the first time ever! Since Sailor Stars was never dubbed with the DiC/Cloverway dub of Sailor Moon the Viz dub is the first and only official English version we’ve gotten.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars episode 200 - Galaxia fights Princess Serenity

Buying digital downloads of the original Japanese version with English subtitles seems unwise as the series was available for free in this format for quite a while on Hulu. The service is now only available for paying customers who can still stream the series in its entirety in Japanese with English subtitles as well as the first four seasons in English. Sailor Moon had been streaming for free on Yahoo! View but that service no longer exists. Canadians can stream the entire series in Japanese with English subtitles on TubiTV. This is a free streaming service with ads.

Have any of you downloaded this version to listen to the end of the dub of Sailor Moon Sailor Stars? If so what did you think? If you’re holding off for the physical release you can support the site by pre-ordering it from Amazon using the links below.

PROPLICA items based on Sailor Moon Eternal, Figuarts Mini and an Eternal Sailor Moon S. H. Figuarts are being revealed at this weekend’s Tamashii Nations event

Tamashii Nation 2019 - Sailor Moon Eternal PROPLICA and Figuarts MiniThis weekend, October 25th to the 27th, is the Tamashii Nations event in Japan, an exhibit where they unveil many upcoming toys. At this year’s event we’re seeing a ton of Sailor Moon figures and toys which includes three PROPLICA toys based on Sailor Moon Eternal, an S. H. Figuarts Eternal Sailor Moon and five Figuarts Mini figures. This was revealed on the official Sailor Moon site and as the event has started, people have already gotten a look at these.

PROPLICA, a portemanteau of prop and replica, is a series of high quality show accurate props. We previously saw many transformation items and broaches based on the original Sailor Moon anime series from this collection. We now have the first PROPLICA items based on Sailor Moon Crystal as the “Eternal Edition” items which are based on the Sailor Moon Eternal films are being released. This includes the Crisis Moon Compact, Sailor Moon’s transformation item, the Chibi Moon Compact, Sailor Chibi Moon’s transformation item, and the Moon Kaleidoscope, Sailor Moon’s attack item from this arc. These are all based on the Dream arc of the manga, which is what is being adapted as the Sailor Moon Eternal films which are coming to Japan starting on September 11th 2020. Note that the name Moon Kaleidoscope is the manga name which we can confirm is being used for Sailor Moon Crystal, though that particular item was referred to as the Kaleidomoon Scope in the original Sailor Moon anime.

Tamashii Nation 2019 - Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Figuarts Mini and Eternal Sailor Moon S. H. Figuarts

The latest figure in the S. H. Figuarts line is Eternal Sailor Moon. This figure is not specifically branded as being a Sailor Moon Crystal figure and is listed as being part of the Sailor Moon series, that meaning the original Sailor Moon anime. Though we have gotten S. H. Figuarts and Figuarts Zero figures based on Sailor Moon Crystal, these are specifically branded as such. This is a nice looking figure, as all of the S. H. Figuarts have been.

Finally we have a lot of Figuarts Mini figures from both the original Sailor Moon anime as well as from the Sailor Moon Eternal films. From Sailor Moon Sailor Stars from the original anime we have Sailor Star Fighter, Maker and Healer. From the Sailor Moon Crystal films Sailor Moon Eternal we have Super Sailor Moon and Sailor Sailor Chibi Moon. It seems feasible that we would also be seeing an Eternal Sailor Moon in this series at a later date, perhaps when the second film’s release approaches.

I had some wild speculation about what the black rectangle in the first image might be concealing but after seeing footage of the event it seems it’s just a monitor showing images we’ve seen.

Do you plan on buying any of these? Are you taking out a mortgage to do so?

The Sailor Moon SuperS dub is now available to stream on Hulu

Sailor Moon SuperS dub on Hulu

Great news for Sailor Moon fans who don’t want to spend money on physical media but don’t mind spending money on streaming video services. The new Viz English dub of Sailor Moon SuperS is now available on Hulu! The subbed version has been on Hulu for many years, but the dubbed episodes have only been released some time after the home video releases were sold in stores. I’m not sure exactly when this happened but it seems it was recently. I frequently received questions from fans asking when SuperS will be out on Hulu, so I know some people had been waiting for it! Earlier today I stumbled upon this article from Variety which listed “Sailor Moon: Season 4″ as being released on October 1st. When I doubled checked Hulu’s list of October releases, Sailor Moon was not listed, however the dubbed episodes of Sailor Moon SuperS were already streaming on the site.

Sailor Moon SuperS episode 166 - Princess Serenity catching Sailor Chibi Moon

As a Canadian I don’t have the option to watch Hulu without some sort of proxy and I’m not going to bother paying for something which is that much trouble. Other streaming options exist in Canada, such as TubiTV, but that service does not offer the dubbed episodes which stream on Hulu. Fans can also watch subbed episodes on Viz.com but this also doesn’t include the dubbed episodes. Until recently Yahoo View! was a free option for content which used to stream for free on Hulu but the service ceased in June of this year.

If like me you’re holding out on moving forward with the digital and streaming revolution you can listen to Viz’s Sailor Moon dub by buying the seasons using the links below.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 is now available to pre-order from Amazon

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 - Blu-Ray cover

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2, the final release in Viz’s new dub of the original Sailor Moon anime, is now available to pre-order from Amazon. The set will be out on November 12th of this year, just in time for Christmas. You can support the site by pre-ordering it using this link or through the links below. A lot of people used the Amazon links on the site to buy the first set which is greatly appreciated. I run Sailor Moon News as a hobby but these ads which I pepper all over the site help cover the modest expenses that the site incurs.

It bears repeating that the Right Stuf already had the set up for pre-order and fans chosing that retailer can get a “Gift With Purchase” of some Sailor Stars Art Cards if they pre-order using this link. The design of those cards hasn’t been released yet. I don’t get a kick back from Right Stuf but don’t let that stop you if you’re looking to get those cards!

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Part 2 - Blu-Ray back

Are you planning on getting this set? I was quite happy with Part 1, as you can tell from my review. If you’re missing any sets, here are a bunch of links where you can order them.
