Kodansha confirms the new Sailor Moon anime will air around January 2014 in 10 languages

Kodansha Comics USA booth at NYCC 2013

This weekend is New York Comic Con where there was a Kodansha Comics panel to discuss many things, including the current state of the Sailor Moon manga, art books and the new Sailor Moon anime we’re all excited to see. A lot of what we already knew was repeated at this panel. We had already heard that the new Sailor Moon anime would air in the winter. This is repeated as being “around January 2014″. The method of distribution was once again confirmed to be Niconico, a Japanese online streaming video site, and it was added that the show will be subtitled in 10 different languages! This would obviously include English, though we can only speculate as to what the other languages may be.

Kodansha Comics USA also gave out some items at their booth including a Sailor Moon 2014 calendar, similar to the one they released last year.

Sailor Moon Figuarts ZERO figure in colour

The Tamashi Nations Sailor Moon site has been updated with colour images of their upcoming Figuarts ZERO Sailor Moon figure which will be available in March from Bandai and Volks. We had previously only seen a grey prototype of this toy. The image below shows it next to the S. H. Figuarts figure to demonstrate scale, which is useful only to people who actually have the S. H. Figuarts figure which is itself a fairly small toy. It will be 22 cm tall, roughly 8.5″. It is priced at 8,800 yen which is about $91 US so get started on that loan application now. You can preorder this toy from JList for a mere $110.

This figure is not posable and is modelled after Sailor Moon from the Sailor Moon R arc of the anime, as Sailor Moon is seen with her Cutie Moon Rod and Crystal Star Brooch.

The Live Action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon series premiered 10 years ago today

Miyuu Sawai as Sailor Moon and Jouji Shibue as Tuxedo Mask from the live action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon series

October 4th 2003, 10 years ago, the first episode of the live action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon TV series premiered in Japan. The show didn’t achieve much success with a North American audience but many fans did have a fondness for it. With a total of 49 episodes the series ran for about a year and also had two direct to video specials and a live stage show, along with a lot of merchandise.

Keiko Kitagawa as Sailor Mars

The story of this series was a retelling of the Dark Kingdom storyline from the manga and anime. While at the beginning there were many similarities, the series quickly defied expectations and did it’s own thing going so far as to introduce new variations of classic characters like Sailor Luna, Dark Mercury, Mio Kuroki and Princess Sailor Moon. The effects were a bit cheap and Luna was a plush most of the time but the show still had a certain quality to it that made it very much Sailor Moon.

New super deformed Sailor Moon figures from MegaHouse

MegaHouse Sailor Moon figures

There are some great looking new Sailor Moon figures on their way from MegaHouse. These super deformed or “chibi” style figures come in a total of 14 designs, showing 8 characters. How does that work? Well the series includes two versions each of Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Tuxedo Mask as well as lucky items of Luna and Artemis. It may appear that there are duplicate figures but in reality there are simply variations in the winking faces of the various Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask has a variant without his mask. The toys are 6 to 9 cm tall (about 2.4″ to 3.5″) and are set to hit store shelves in Japan this winter. They are 700 yen each, about $7 US, though they are likely to be sold as a set.

Sailor Mars S. H. Figuarts figure

The pre-order for Bandai’s Sailor Mars S. H. Figuarts figure has been available on Amazon for a few weeks now but I didn’t get a chance to post about it but that’s okay because it’s a pre-order! The figure won’t be released in North American until January 15th. You can get the figure a bit earlier if you import it from Japan but be prepared to pay for it in shipping! The figure is out on December 31st in Japan so you won’t be getting it that much sooner, as compared to other figures. You can pre-order it from sites like JList, CD Japan, YesAsia or Amazon Japan.

Can’t wait to get a figure? The Sailor Moon figure is actually out and you can get it now from Amazon! It’s been out for a while in Japan and has just been released in North America. Many fans have already gotten their figures (mine is still in the mail) but if you didn’t pre-order it you can order it now and it will ship right away.
