Listen to a short clip of Viz’s new Sailor Moon dub

Leaked Viz dub clip from Anime Expo

A 25 second clip of Viz’s new Sailor Moon dub has been leaked! This was recorded last weekend at Viz’s panel at Anime Expo where the new dub cast was announced. It features Usagi, as voiced by Stephanie Sheh, from the begning of episode 2. No other characters are present in this scene. Episode 2 was played first accidentally. Once this was noticed the audience was told not to record anything, so no more clips are available. Here’s a transcript of what is said in the clip:

I’m a cancer with blood type O. My birthstone is a pearl and I am a bit of a klutz. Some people might say I’m also a little emotional. So one day this strange cat named Luna appeared, turned me into a guardian in a sailor uniform and told me I had to fight bad guys. Boy does that ever make me nervous, but I’m sure it’ll all work out fine.

This weekend at Anime Expo Viz Media announced the cast of their new Sailor Moon dub which will include all episodes, including the never before dubbed 5th season Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. Here’s a rundown of the cast:

Stephanie Sheh – Sailor Moon
Kate Higgins – Sailor Mercury

When it was first announced that Viz would be producing a new dub of Sailor Moon it was not clear who, if anyone, might be returning from the original cast. As we can now see this is an all new cast without any returning voice actors. Most of the cast seems comprised of voice actors having done other anime work. Let’s hope this new team does a great job!

Sailor Moon fans already planning to go to Unplugged Expo in Toronto this September 27th and 28th will be happy to see that Johnny Yong Bosch, who will be attending the convention, will be voicing Artemis in the new series.

Sailor Moon Crystal Act 1 first impressions

Sailor Moon Crystal Act.1 Usagi - Sailor Moon - Usagi and Luna

This morning the first episode of the new Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Moon Crystal, premiered worldwide on Crunchyroll, Niconico and Hulu. The show is free to watch on a number of these services. For more details, check out these instructions on how to watch the show. I personally found the quality of Crunchyroll’s stream to be higher than Hulu or Niconico’s and so I would recommend checking them out to watch the show if you haven’t already.

Sailor Moon Crystal Act.1 Usagi - Sailor Moon - Title screen

The episode, titled Act.1 Usagi – Sailor Moon, resembled the first episode of the original Sailor Moon anime quite closely. This is fairly expected given this series is meant to resemble the Manga closely and the first episode of each series was quite faithful to that. In fact the first Act of the manga is also titled Usagi – Sailor Moon. With only 26 episodes for this series we certainly can’t expect an episode per episode repeat of the original show.

Sailor Moon Crystal Act.1 Usagi - Sailor Moon - Morga

In this episode we get a pretty good look at Silver Millennium, the ancient kingdom on the Moon, as well as Princess Serenity and Endymion through a couple of Usagi’s dream sequences. Once again we have Morga, a monster impersonating Naru’s mother as ordered by Jadeite, as the main villain of the episode. We are also introduced to Luna, Naru, Umino, Shingo, Sailor Moon’s mother Ikuko and her teacher Haruna. We also see mention of Sailor V, who will later be appearing as Sailor Venus, who shows up in a newspaper, is mentioned by Umino and is the star of her own video game.

Sailor Moon Crystal Act.1 Usagi - Sailor Moon - Serenity and Endymion

One aspect which bothered me a bit was the reaction Usagi had to her first meeting of Mamoru. Instead of being annoyed but a little intrigued she is instead completely infatuated with him from the beginning. We shall see how this relationship develops throughout the series. If this show truly does mirror the manga, things should escalate fairly quickly.

Sailor Moon Crystal Act.1 Usagi - Sailor Moon - Super Sonic Wave Attack

Sailor Moon makes two attack in this episode. The first is the same Supersonic Waves attack which she made in the first episode of the original anime, which she almost never uses again. The second was Moon Tiara Boomerang. This attack was first used in the live action Sailor Moon series. In the original Manga the attack was Moon Frisbee and in the original anime it was Moon Tiara Action. In the rereleased Manga books the move was updated to be called Moon Tiara Boomerang, as is seen here.

Sailor Moon Crystal Act.1 Usagi - Sailor Moon - Ami Mizuno

Act.2, as I guess we are now referring to the episodes as acts, will be premiering in two weeks time, July 19th at 7pm JST, 6am EST and 3am PST in the same places. Since Ami is shown very briefly at the end of this episode I would imagine she will be joining as Sailor Mercury as of the next act. This would be consistent with Sailor Mercury’s appearance in the second act of the Sailor Moon manga “Act 2: Ami – Sailor Mercury”.

Keep reading for more screenshots from the episode.

How to watch Sailor Moon Crystal

Sailor Moon Crystal episode 01 - Usagi and Mamoru

We’re less than 24 hours to the first episode of Sailor Moon Crystal, the new Sailor Moon anime! The series will be released simultaneous worldwide! The show premieres July 5th in Japan at 7pm Japan Standard Time. Due to the magic of time zones that is actually 6am Eastern Standard Time and 3am Pacific Standard Time, the time when Crunchyroll announced the show would be available. Japanese fans can watch the series on Niconico. This article has links to streams in all languages including the English stream. English speaking fans who want to watch the series with subtitles should also check out Hulu or Crunchyroll.

crunchyroll

The main advantage of watching the series on Crunchyroll is the potential for an ad free experience. The default Crunchyroll service is free to view through a web browser, on iOS and on Android for standard definition video with ad interuptions. The premium service, which costs $6.95 a month, will give access to all of their Anime series, removes video ads, allows access to HD 720p and 1080p versions of series which support it and allows for streaming on all available devices. This ads support for Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, Windows Phone, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Vita, OUYA and some Smart TVs. This service is available to Canadian users. Follow the link to Crunchyroll’s Sailor Moon Crystal page to watch the series as it becomes available.

Hulu

Sailor Moon Crystal will also be available to view on Hulu and Neon Alley. The service is free through a web browser with ads. Hulu’s pay service Hulu Plus will unfortunately not do anything to remove those ads. This service, which costs $7.99 a month, exists to allow customers to view a more extensive back catalog of older shows. It’s unclear at this time if and when older episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal will be restricted to users without Hulu Plus accounts. The other advantage to Hulu Plus is the ability to watch shows on additional devices. With the pay service you’ll be able to watch shows on iOS, Android, Windows phones, Amazon Kindle Fire, Nook, Apple TV, Roku, TiVo, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii, Wii U, 3DS and many other supported TVs and media players. Watch the new series on Hulu’s Sailor Moon Crystal page as it becomes available. You can also watch the original Sailor Moon anime on Hulu.

Hulu is not available in Canada. Looking to use it anyway? You can with the help of a VPN service. I personally use a pay service called Unblock US to connect to Hulu and US Netflix. It’s DNS based so any device can be configured to use it. If you’re looking for a free option you can use Hola which installs as a browser extention allowing you to easily switch between countries while browsing. It works well with the free browser based version of Hulu.

Both Crunchyroll and Hulu have a 2 week free trial period for their premium service.

New episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal will air at this same time on these same sites the first and third Saturdays of every month.

Watch Sailor Moon’s transformation sequence from Sailor Moon Crystal

Sailor Moon's transformation sequence from Sailor Moon Crystal

We’ve got a good look at Sailor Moon’s transformation sequence from Sailor Moon Crystal. Monday we posted a bootlegged clip from the first episode, including the transformation sequence, which was made private. Now we’ve got a better quality version of her transformation sequence. Watch the clip!

(The last clip was pulled and this one might to but I’m sharing it while it’s online)

As we can see this transformation sequence bears some similarities to the original one, though a lot of CG is used now! What do you think? Keep reading for a series of screenshots from the clip.
