Join voice actors Linda Ballantyne, Toby Proctor, Katie Griffin, and Susan Roman as they discuss what is took to bring English dialogue to these Japanese sensations.
Texas Sailor Moon fans won’t want to miss Amazing Houston Comic Con this weekend, September 4th to the 6th. In attendance will be Linda Ballantyne, the voice of Sailor Moon, Susan Roman, the voice of Sailor Jupiter, and Toby Proctor, the voice of Tuxedo Mask. The convention is being held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston. The convention web site does not list them on the guests page but the programming page does mention a Sailor Moon Spotlight Panel on Saturday afternoon at 11am.
Panel Room 1
Sailor Moon Spotlight
They fight evil by moonlight, and win the love of their adoring fans by daylight! Now you can meet the original voices behind the hit series Sailor Moon: Linda Ballantyne (Sailor Moon/Serena), Susan Roman (Lita/Sailor Jupiter), and Toby Proctor (Tuxedo Mask). They’ll be on hand to answer questions, act out scenes and more! Come meet the people who made Sailor Moon one of the most popular anime in North America! Autograph Signing will take place immediately following the panel.
Linda Ballantyne provided the 3rd voice of Sailor Moon for the 3rd and 4th seasons, Sailor Moon S and SuperS, of the original English dub. Susan Roman provided the voice of Sailor Jupiter for the entire first dub of the series. Toby Proctor was the 2nd voice of Tuxedo Mask providing his voice for most of the first 65 DiC dubbed episodes which spanned the first two seasons.
Viz’s Sailor Moon panel took place today at Anime Expo in Los Angeles. You can watch the stream of the event at Ustream. The main announcement that took place was the cast of Viz’s new dub of Sailor Moon S. Though most of the cast appeared in earlier seasons the new characters who’s voices were announced were Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Saturn and Professor Tomoe.
The new cast, all of whom were in attendance, are listed below:
Keith Silverstein also voiced Usagi’s father Kenji Tsukino while Erica Mendez also voiced Reika, Motoki’s girlfriend.
We previously mentioned that Erica Mendez would be appearing at Unplugged Expo July 31st to August 2nd in Toronto based on her role as Reika. Now that she’s been cast as the voice of Sailor Uranus fans of Sailor Moon will have another reason to meet her.
There was more announced at this event. We’ve learned that there will be another Moonlight Party on July 17th. This will coincide with the release of the English dub of the second half of Sailor Moon R on Hulu.
It was also announced that the dubbed version of Sailor Moon Crystal will be exclusive to Hulu. We can infer from this that Sailor Moon Crystal will not likely be playing on English television. Though the subtitled version of Sailor Moon Crystal will remain available on Crunchyroll and Niconico, this does not leave any option for viewing Sailor Moon Crystal in Canada, where Hulu is not available. Canadians still have no legal option for viewing the streaming version of the subbed and dubbed versions of the original Sailor Moon Anime. This said there are many proxy.
A clip of the English dub of Sailor Moon Crystal was shown, and can be seen at the 41 minute mark of the stream. The first two episodes will be premiering at Anime Expo today at 6pm Pacific Time, which is 9pm Eastern Time.
Earlier this week we posted about the live Sailor Moon Crystal event to celebrate Usagi’s birthday. While there wasn’t much to get excited about in this event one cool thing was the cast of Sailor Moon Crystal reading a story from the Sailor Moon Manga. With the manga being in Japanese and the images not being shown this isn’t of much use to English speaking fans but fans SailorGigi and Philip Walker edited together a version where you can read the manga along with the audio! Here is the Sailor Moon Manga short story “The Melancholy of Makoto” read by the cast of Sailor Moon Crystal.
This isn’t much different than an average episode of Sailor Moon Crystal with it’s accurate retelling of the manga storyline. This short story takes place while the girls are preparing for their high school entrance exams, a time period not covered by any main story arc of the anime or manga.
There was a live streaming event this morning to celebrate Usagi and Chibiusa’s birthdays which take place on June 30th. Fans were hoping for some sort of announcement of new episodes at this event but no such thing took place. At this point we have only two more episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal which remain in the second phase which is currently airing and no new episodes beyond this have been announced. Act 25 will air on July 4th and Act 26, the final episode currently planned, will air on July 18th.
Should any new episodes air they would begin on August 1st given the current schedule, and such episodes would cover the infinity arc which introduces us to Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Saturn. With no new episodes announced to date it seems quite possible that no new episode will be airing on that day. There is always the possibility of a break in the release of episodes leading to a new season at a later point in time. At this point we don’t have any confirmation one way or another as to whether the series will be renewed or canceled.
The event was blocked outside of Japan but it does not seem like there was much to miss. The cast of Sailor Moon Crystal was there as they recapped older episodes and read excerpts from the manga. This event was not really intended to announce any news but fans were still hoping for something.
As always should any new information become available about new episodes of the series we will share it with you.
The first two episodes of the English dub of Sailor Moon Crystal will be premiered at the Anime Expo convention in Los Angeles on Friday July 3rd at 6pm, as part of Sailor Moon Day. The anime convention’s schedule is now online, where the event was listed. This will be Act 1, Usagi – Sailor Moon, and Act 2, Ami – Sailor Mercury. The English dub, by Viz Media, will keep the same cast that their new English dub of the original anime used. Some of those actors will be present at the convention. Since this convention takes place in California all times will be in Pacific Time.
Anime Expo will take place the weekend of July 2nd to the 5th in Los Angeles California. The convention will feature many guests from the English dub of the original Sailor Moon Anime and Sailor Moon Crystal. In attendance will be Stephanie Sheh, the voice of Sailor Moon, Cristina Vee, the voice of Sailor Mars, Amanda Miller, the voice of Sailor Jupiter, Cherami Leigh, the voice of Sailor Venus, Robbie Daymond, the voice of Tuxedo Mask and Sandy Fox, the voice of Chibiusa and Black Lady. Kyle Hebert, who played the Priest who turned into the monster Boxy in the new dub, will also be at the convention though he may not be involved in the dub of Sailor Moon Crystal or the Sailor Moon themed events.
Also at the convention will be Momoiro Clover Z, the band which performs the Sailor Moon Crystal opening theme, Moon Pride, and ending theme, Gekkou or Moonbow. Momoiro Clover Z will be performing on Thursday July 2nd with KISS members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. The two bands recently collaborated on a single released as Momoiro Clover Z vs. KISS. Watch the video below.
Friday is Sailor Moon Day at Anime Expo. This starts with the Official Sailor Moon Panel by Viz Media and the cast of Sailor Moon from 10am to noon. Following this from 1pm to 2:30pm will be a screening of Sailor Moon’s best episodes, though we don’t know what those will be at this time. From 4:30pm to 5:30pm will be a Sailor Moon Cosplay gathering. Then from 6pm to 7:30pm is the English dub premiere of Act 1 and 2 of Sailor Moon Crystal. Other events listed in their schedule that will likely be relevant to Sailor Moon fans are the Viz Media panel on Thursday July 2nd at 1:15pm and the Viz Animation Panel featuring Neon Alley on Saturday July 4th at 4pm.
Unplugged Expo continues in their tradition of having great Sailor Moon voice actors as guests at their convention. For Unplugged Expo 4 in downtown Toronto the weekend of July 31st to August 2nd they will have voice actors from the original and new Sailor Moon dub! First up is Jennifer Gould, who played the voice of Sailor Saturn in the original English dub of Sailor Moon S. She also appeared as the voice of Parapara of the Amazoness Quartet in Sailor Moon SuperS and as the astronaut Himeko Nayotake, Kakeru’s love interest in the Sailor Moon S movie. Jennifer Gould is also an accomplished singer who won a Juno in 2008. Juno is Canadian for Grammy.
Also appearing is Erica Mendez, the voice of Reika, Motoki’s girlfriend, in Viz’s new dub of the original Sailor Moon anime. This is a somewhat minor role in the series though Erica Mendez is more well known for other anime voice acting credits such as Aladdin in Magi: The Kingdom of Magic and Ryuko Matoi in Kill la Kill.
Last month Viz announced the voice actors you’ll be hearing as part of Viz’s new dub of Sailor Moon R once the Black Moon Clan shows up. You can currently listen to the dub of episode 60, which features the voices of Rubeus and the Ayakashi Sisters. We will be getting a lot more of these voices tomorrow as we get the dubbed versions of episodes 61 through 68 on Hulu and Neon Alley as part of the Mini Moonlight Party. The voices of Esmeraude, Saphir and Prince Demande will not be showing up as part of the first half of the season so we won’t be hearing them until later this year.
These are mostly newly cast actors with the exception of Cindy Robinson who was previously cast as Queen Beryl and is now voicing Berthier. The cast of Viz’s new dub of the original Sailor Moon anime will be reprising their roles in Sailor Moon Crystal so we will be hearing these same voice actors once the second story arc of Sailor Moon Crystal gets dubbed.
Yesterday we even received a Tweet from Rena Strober (credited as Rena S. Mandel) to let us know that she’s currently working on dubbing Esmeraude! We can’t wait to hear what she sounds like.
@SailorMoon_News I was back dubbing my favorite evil lady Esmaurald today!!! Can't wait to share her laughs!
It was previously announced that Chibiusa would be voiced by Sandy Fox and Sailor Pluto would be voiced by Veronica Taylor.
The first season of Viz’s new dub is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Sailor Moon R part 1 will be released in June. Buy these sets using the links below to support the site.
North Carolina Sailor Moon fans will have a chance to meet voice actors from Japan and North America at Animazement at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, North Carolina this coming May 22nd to the 24th! The convention will feature Keiko Han, who voiced Luna in the original Sailor Moon anime and the live action Sailor Moon series, as well as Amanda C. Miller, the voice of Sailor Juipter in Viz’s new dub of the original Sailor Moon anime.
Besides these Sailor Moon artists this convention will also feature a number of other guests from Japanese and English voices of many anime series.
Linda Ballantyne, the voice of Sailor Moon, and Toby Proctor, the voice of Tuxedo Mask, will be appearing at Otafest at the University of Calgary May 8th to the 10th. Amongst other events the convention will feature a live script reading of a Sailor Moon script with the two of them voicing their characters. I wonder what script they are planning to use, as the two have never appeared in the same episode together.
Linda Ballantyne is the third voice of Sailor Moon, voicing the character for the 3rd and 4th seasons, Sailor Moon S and SuperS. During these episodes the voice of Tuxedo Mask was provided by Vince Corazza. Toby Proctor is the second voice of Tuxedo Mask, taking over after Rino Romano voiced him for only a few episodes, covering most of the first two seasons, Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R. Toby Proctor’s Tuxedo Mask acted opposite Terri Hawkes, who was herself the second voice of Sailor Moon.
The schedule of events for Otafest is already online. Friday at 7:30pm North American the Voice Acting Roundtable will included Linda Ballantyne and Toby Proctor. This is followed by an autograph session at 8:30pm. Saturday afternoon the two actors have another autograph session at 1:30pm. The Sailor Moon script reading will take place on Sunday afternoon at 2pm
