Terri Hawkes, voice of Sailor Moon, at Florida Anime Experience

Terri Hawkes voice of Sailor Moon at Florida anime experience

Terri Hawkes, the English voice of Sailor Moon, was recently a guest at the Florida Anime Experience, her first anime conversion. She talked a bit about her experience and then fielded a number of questions about her time on Sailor Moon.

Amongst other things in this panel Terri talks about jobs she did with Tracy Moore, fighting the Negaverse, her favourite episode to record and dodges a question about which Sailor Scout is her favourite.

Terri Hawkes was the second voice of Sailor Moon, following a few episodes recorded by Tracey Moore. She voiced the majority of the first two seasons of the dub so she’s likely the voice most fans associate with the character, besides the original Japanese voice of course. In later seasons Linda Ballantyne provided Sailor Moon’s voice.

Check out Sailor Moon Obsession for more about this panel and the convention.

Sailor Moon episode 45 - Sailor Moon mourns her friends' deaths and is touched by the ghost of Sailor Jupiter

Sailor Moon is, in my opinion, the greatest series of all time. With that being said, what’s the best of the best? Sailor Moon at it’s best was epic, emotional, exciting and often hilarious. Picking my 5 favourites isn’t easy. I tried to put a little variety in here so I selected from different seasons and chose different kinds of episodes. I hope you like my choices, and I also hope you share your own list of favourite episodes in the comments.

The Sailor Moon Anime turns 20 today

Luna trying to motivate a reluctant Usagi in Sailor Moon

How times flies. 20 years ago today, on March 7th 1992, the first episode of Sailor Moon aired in Japan. 5 years ago I wrote this short article commemorating 15 years. Not a ton has changed in the past 5 years. The manga is being released again and a lot of merchandise has come out in the past few months but the rights issues with this now classic 20 year old anime series remain the same. You just can’t walk into a store and buy the greatest anime series of all time in North America.

Anna Faris parodies Sailor Moon on Saturday Night Live

Anna Faris parodies Sailor Moon on Saturday night live

In this past weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live a skit featured host Anna Faris as a character that looks quite familiar to Sailor Moon fans. The clip has Faris playing a Japanese anime fan and despite the similarities to Sailor Moon she mentions she is dressed as her own fan made character “Cherry Cherry Rock and Roll”.

Americans can watch the clip on Hulu:

SDCC 2011: Olivia Munn Cosplays as Sailor Moon

Olivia Munn Cosplaying as Sailor Moon at SDCC 2011

Cosplay is a big part of conventions and no one loves dressing up more than former Attack of the Show host Olivia Munn. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con she dressed as Sailor Moon. Of course just dressing in a sexy Sailor Moon costume wasn’t quite enough for Olivia Munn, so she went on to post a photo of herself, half dressed, getting into her costume on twitter.

This wasn’t the first time Olivia wore this particular costume. Back in October 2008 she wore it on a Halloween episode of Attack of the Show while Kevin Pereira, dressed as Billy Mays, pretended to violate her. Does anyone ship these two?

Darkwing Duck dressed as Sailor Moon

Darkwing Duck as Sailor Moon
I am the danger that fights evil by moonlight! I am the middle schooler that wins love by daylight! I am … Sailor … Duck?

Here’s Drake Malard aka Darkwing Duck from issue #8 of Boom’s recent Darkwing Duck comic, dressed as Sailor Moon! This is hardly the only cameo in this issue, as a seemingly endless number of alternate Darkwing Ducks all appear and it seems any mildly relevant comic or pop culture character from the past several decades makes an appearance. Tron, Sherlock Holmes, Where’s Waldo and more and more and more and … more.

Just check out a few examples from just that frame:

Thanks to poster Twighligh Ghost for bringing this to my attention in a post in the otherwise deserted alt.fan.sailor-moon newsgroup.

S is for Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon is not a building block of what makes me a geek. It’s the whole building, and whatever else makes me a geek is maybe a broom closet in that building. I first caught Sailor Moon on TV at age 17 back in 1995 when it was dubbed and playing about a billion times a week up here in Canada. This began my love affair with anime. People would tell me that Sailor Moon was a great gateway anime, and that when they would watch other stuff they would realize that it was only the beginning. Well that never happened for me. I’ve watched a lot of anime in my life, but I’ve just never seen anything that measured up to Sailor Moon. To me it is, without question, the greatest story ever told. So bear with me as I talk about that one element of geek culture that I truly have an unparalleled passion for.

I’ll be giving a full franchise overview for those not intimately familiar with Sailor Moon, but I’ll also try to thrown in some rare content that some hardcore fans will hopefully not have seen before.

Sailor Moon Panels at Otakon 2008

Otakon 2008 - Sailor Moon Panels Banner

This year’s Otakon had a great Sailor Moon showing with 2 fan panels lead by Lilly-chan. One was for “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon”, the live action series from a few years ago, and the other was for Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of the Sailor Moon manga, among other things.

I was asked to record both videos to share with the Sailor Moon fan community over at Genvid.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Fan Panel:

Panel features Lilly-chan, Yoshinex and Sakura with Kungpow and Moon Jump doing the game demo.

Naoko Takeuchi Fan Panel:

Panel features Kungpow, Lilly-chan, Yoshinex and Moon Jump.

Also at this year’s convention were two Sailor Moon animators Kazuko Tadano and Hiromi Matsushita who did a great panel but my camera ate the footage.

Links to various pages mentioned in the two videos appear below.
