A new web site for the Sailor Moon Reflections book has been set up. Roland Parliament, voice director for the first 65 episodes of Sailor Moon and the voice of Melvin from the dub, has written this book to share stories of his time working on the series. It will included many behind the scenes tales of the DIC English dub of Sailor Moon including some photos from the time of the recording. What I do want to do is to share with the reader my observations about how this series came to be what it is, and to dispel any rumors that may exist, as I know them. About the Author

Roland Parliament is a voice actor, dialectician, composer, writer, musician and educator. He lives in Toronto, Canada. He teaches an advertising course at the Harris Institute for the Arts in Toronto. Over the past 22 years, he has been a dialects and voice acting teacher at Ryerson University and Humber College, Toronto, and a guest lecturer at the University of Toronto.

Roland has voiced thousands of commercials, and has composed and produced no fewer than 300 jingles. His company, Wizard Productions Inc., has won over 75 international awards for its work. Additionally, he has directed and acted in several animation projects.

  1. I want to read this book too but it seems the epitome of arrogance for Roland to declare that Sailor Moon is the one dub by which all other dubs will be judged by. If that honor belongs to anyone, it would be the Cowboy Bebop dub.

    • Well said and very true. Cowboy Bebop had a very solid dub, one of the few I can stand to listen to (the others are usually Studio Ghibli films). Plus, the dub was accurate and the material wasn’t cut to pieces, as with Sailor Moon.

    • It does sound “arrogant”, but it’s true that what they did on Sailor Moon was unusual at the time. I don’t think it was unheard of, but unusual for a “low-budget” (i.e. not Disney) dubbed foreign television series.

      If you were alive before there was English Sailor Moon, you’ll know that a lot of times, lower-budget dubs of Japanese cartoons usually sounded like non-actors yelling their lines across a room as quickly as they could to fit in all the words before the characters’ lips stopped moving. Quality was not their priority, they were just “getting it done”. The dub of Sailor Moon sounded very natural, rarely like people rushing to fit their lines in. That was obviously the result of a lot of hard work, and the fact that it’s not apparent when you watch it is proof.

      I’d like to think (although I don’t know for sure) that when it says “making the English version of Sailor Moon the standard by which all English translations of foreign animations are judged” it’s referring to the behind-the-scenes technical processes (like recording), not the final result, and not the translation (since it wasn’t translated, it was adapted). If it’s actually talking about the finished cartoon and the “translation” itself, then, yeah…that’s totally delusional.

  2. I will definitely agree that the DiC dub of Sailor Moon was a lot better than most of the other dubs at the time. In spite of my problems with the dub, I think the original English VAs did a good job of sounding like actual teenage girls. Even with most uncut dubs of anime at the time, most of the time teenage characters always seemed to sound like 30-something adults obviously trying to sound half their age and it rarely sounded convincing. And having seen the video of Jennifer Cihi’s Anime Expo concert, she’s still a very talented singer. I hope this book won’t just be a fluff piece about how much fun they had working on the dub and they’ll go into detail over issues like why did Tracey Moore leave the show so early on.

    • I believe Tracey has already confirmed in an interview she left because she also voice directed the entire show, and it started to become too much for her after a few episodes. I think she also had some other projects she wanted to leave to pursue.
