Sailor Moon Crystal Act 5 - Makoto Kino

The latest episode of Sailor Moon Crystal is now available in English on Hulu and Neon Alley. This week we get Act 5, Makoto – Sailor Jupiter. Sailor Moon Crystal Act 5 - Yumiko and Usagi in wedding dresses

Fans of the original anime who are new to Sailor Moon Crystal will find resemblences to two episodes of that series. The first is episode 25, Jupiter – the Powerful Girl in Love, which introduces us to Sailor Jupiter but generally doesn’t have much in common, instead introducing us to the concept of the Rainbow Crystals and “Game Machine Joe”. The other is episode 16, A Girl’s Dream: Usagi Becomes a Bride, which is all about wedding dresses. These are similarities to the original manga, to which Sailor Moon Crystal is very faithful, which the original anime was itself based on. We can see just how fast the story is progressing with Makoto being introduced so early, but keep in mind this season will only have 13 episodes in total.

  1. really enjoying sailor moon shame i cant watch it straight on hulu (im in uk) but i can watch it on on dubbed english websites ow well looks like crystal wont be fully dubbed till a few months, on bright side watching all 90s sailor moon right now.

  2. Once again, I love the enhanced animation and how well the dub just works with Crystal. This may seem weird, but it has a bit more impact with me in English than it does in Japanese, and I get overwhelmed with emotion whenever I see the Sailor Guardians triumph over adversity and realize their true strength, like Jupiter did in this episode.

  3. This is still one of my favorite episodes of Crystal. I loved how it followed the manga faithfully while also expanding just enough to give us more background on Makoto’s character. I feel like this is some of the most character development we’ve gotten for Makoto as it always felt like the original 90s anime treated her more like a comic relief character rather than a serious Sailor Soldier. I also loved that Crystal treated Makoto’s crush on her sempai as a serious issue for her rather than the running gag they dragged it out as in the 90s show. And I especially loved the hints at Makoto and Nephrite they added in Crystal. Even in the original web release of this episode, it seemed like the animation in this episode was very high quality and beautiful. My only disappointment was they cut out crossdressing Usagi from the manga but it’s all together a wonderful episode. It’s amazing it took us 25 episodes to even get to Makoto in the 90s show.

  4. Makoto’s English voice actress is top notch!
I feel like the English dub is so far better than the Japanese one (for once) and the Viz cast fits Crystal better than they did classic.
