Sailor Moon was the 4th most watched show on Crave the week it was released

Sailor Moon R episode 71 - Usagi's inappropriate cheering

The original Sailor Moon anime was added to Bell Media’s Canadian streaming platform Crave on September 18th. It was featured in a number of categories and “Sailor Moon” trended on social media platforms the next day. Anecdotally it seemed like a lot of people were watching it, but how did the numbers add up? According to Bell’s streaming overview for the week of September 24th to the 30th the show faired quite well in its first week! It was the 4th most watched program on Crave for the week of September 16th to the 22nd, as can be seen from this excerpt from that press release:

Crave Audience Metrics

Crave continues to have Canadians covered, delivering the best movies, TV series, and original hits all in one place. Ridley Scott’s HBO Max Original Series RAISED BY WOLVES holds the top spot for the second week in a row, followed by the sizzling reality series LOVE ISLAND at #2. STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS takes #3 for the third consecutive week, and the beloved anime series, SAILOR MOON debuts at #4. Here are the Top 10 most-watched programs on Crave for the week of September 16 – 22:

1. RAISED BY WOLVES
2. LOVE ISLAND
3. STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS
4. SAILOR MOON
5. LOVECRAFT COUNTRY
6. THE VOW
7. SPIES IN DISGUISE
8. SOUTH PARK
9. THE THIRD DAY
10. THE BIG BANG THEORY

This is pretty impressive! It was beat out only by HBO’s Raised By Wolves, Love Island, which as far as I can tell does not take place on an island and is almost certainly devoid of actual love, and Star Trek: Lower Decks which streams on CBS All Access in the US. That’s great, you might be thinking, but that was a couple of weeks ago! Well it looks like the series was not in the top 10 most watched shows for the weeks of September 24th to the 30th or October 1st to the 7th.

          • Yeah it has stuff like that too though Big Bang isn’t there because of HBO. It’s on CTV a network owned by Bell so it’s on Crave without the HBO subscription. I think it’s the same for South Park though it’s on a different channel.

          • Yeah when I saw that I checked Crave to see if they had it and they didn’t. Looking forward to that. I used to watch the show religiously but I fell out of habit and haven’t kept up in years.

          • the South Park Special is about whatever happened in 2020 like COVID-19 i think butters tries to go to Build-A-Bear

          • I turned my face mask into a chin diaper to address the surprise topic of South Park… on a Sailor Moon news site.

Way back in high school, the early 2000s, I had a friend who’d play a weird ‘game’ with me: Take two very disparate properties and think up a fanfiction premise to try and make it work. I ended up with Sailor Moon x South Park. I don’t need to tell any of you, they do not fit. No. lol They do not. Like, at all. Like, wow. Might as well have Inspector Gadget x Silence of the Lambs, but I’m veering off topic.

I tried my best. I came up with the name “Moonlit Mountainside,” and it was Usagi and friends on a trip to South Park, Colorado, USA, and… incoherent, TV MA-rated shenangans. I remeber suggesting Kenny getting killed by one of the Sailor Moon-esque monsters.

Gads, that was long ago. Yowza!

I have become a fan of South Park only recently (I mean, 3-4 years ago), but I never watched the first seasons. It’s too much to catch up on for me. I watch the show in both French and English (the French dub is quite renowned actually, because Christophe Lemoine has been doing a fantastic job for years dubbing both Cartman and Butters), and I use streaming websites to watch my TV shows, so I’ve already watched the special episode and I must say that it is great, really. I can’t really explain in English why it is so clever and strong (I don’t know how I could explain it with subtlety and without spoiling), but guys, when you can watch it, go without hesitation!

And also, Joe, I would pay a lot to get to read your crossover fic. Nowadays, we could easily imagine a crossover where the Sailor Scouts fight alongside the Coon!

*Puts her face diaper again on her nose and mouth and flies away*
