The voice cast from Viz’s Sailor Moon Crystal dub will be the same as the cast of the new dub of the original anime

Sailor Moon Crystal dub voice cast

This past weekend was Anime Boston at the Hynes Convention Center in downtown Boston. At the convention Viz announced the voice cast for their upcoming dub of Sailor Moon Crystal. We’ve known for some time that Viz had the rights to dub Sailor Moon Crystal and it seemed only logical that the dub cast would be the same as the cast for Viz’s new dub of the original anime. This has been confirmed to be the case. Only the main voice actors were mentioned but it stands to reason that all of the cast will return. The slide shown above confirms Sailor Moon, the Sailor Guardians, Tuxedo Mask and the cats are all returning.

Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon – Stephanie Sheh
Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury – Kate Higgins
Rei Hino/Sailor Mars – Cristina Vee
Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter – Amanda Miller
Minako Aino/Sailor Venus – Cherami Leigh
Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask – Robbie Daymond
Luna – Michelle Ruff
Artemis – Johnny Yong Bosch

This is no surprise. These voice actors are all on board to do the dub through SailorStars, the final season, so why wouldn’t they also keep them to do the Sailor Moon Crystal dub?

The series will be using the updated animation used for the Japanese Blu-Ray releases. As mentioned in my reviews of these Blu-Rays there are a number of minor animation updates for these which are generally cosmetic.

  1. I watched a little bit of the Viz redub of the original series and thought it was horrendous but I assumed that was because I’m used to the DiC voice actors while seeing the original animation. I’m hoping VERY much that seeing the new animation with the new voice actors will be much, much more palatable.

So is there a general timeframe of when the new dub will go into production?

    • I’m not aware of a timeline but if I hear anything I’ll post about it.

The new Sailor Moon R dub starts Friday so I’ll post about that soon.

    • I’m not a fan of the Viz dub, either. Some of the voices are alright, but Usagi is just intolerable for me and that’s no good considering how much the focus in on her!

That said, I’m typically not a fan of any dub, so take my opinion on that with a grain of salt.

    • I have a nostalgic attachment to the DiC dub but I don’t see how Stephanie Sheh’s voice for Usagi is that much worse than the valley girl slang of the DiC dub.

      • I think it’s just that we expected better for the character. The Viz dub isn’t bad, it just lacks any of the emotion and character that the Dic dub did. I guess we just want the best of both worlds, an accurate translation with memorable voices.
I’m glad the crazy accents and slang are gone though.

        • Again, I have a nostalgic attachment to the DiC voices too but I don’t see why Terri Hawkes is that much better than Stephanie Sheh when she had that whole yodeling thing for whenever Serena cried. I personally think Stephanie Sheh has a very cute and sweet voice for Usagi and she can pull off the emotional scenes in episodes like episode 34 and 35 as well as Ms. Hawkes did it. And frankly I thought Stephanie Sheh was a lot better in episodes 45 and 46 than Kae Araki’s attempts at imitating Kotono Mitsuishi in those episodes.

  2. Since Sandy Fox is the new voice of Chibiusa will she return to do Chibiusa in Sailor Moon Crystal or will Sugar Lyn will voice her?

    • Why would Stephanie Beard play Chibi-usa in Crystal? It’s clear Viz is going with a clean slate with the new dub and Stephanie Beard hasn’t done voice acting in anime in over a decade, not since Sailor Moon in any case and she’s got her own radio show now.

  3. No, this is not wonderful. Like seriously we need other voice actors because other people might be more appropriate for these (essentially new) characters – or at least have them audition the same as everyone else. Catty 90’s Mars is not the same as Crystal’s refined Mars and so on, they’re really different characters and I think they should have the option of changing since we might get other VA’s more appropriate.

    • Cristina Vee has had experience playing mature serious characters too. You should listen to her performance as Homura in the Madoka Magica English dub. It’s really pretty amazing.

  4. Can’t wait to watch the new R dub. The only thing I have to say about the old dub is that I didn’t remember Uranus’ voice being so.. so.. emotionless? I’ve been watching some of the clips on the Sailor Moon Says youtube channel and Uranus’ scenes are the best. First it was “Doooonnnnnnnn’ttttttt dooooo iiiiitttt” in a monotone voice and then there was a completely monotone “Uranus World Shaking!”

  5. Pretty disappointed to hear this- I tried watching the new dub and could not stomach it. The only voice I thought sounded authentic was Jupiter and Mamo, all the rest sound like they could be the same voice actor. Not really a fan of Sheh’s voice for Usagi whatsoever and had very high hopes for Minako- she sounds probably the most generic and not at all a counterpart of the Japanese voices. What the heck…
