Why is Sailor Moon on this Russian book cover?

Andrei Belyanin's "The Little Sister From Hell" book cover featuring Sailor Moon

Oh the things that can be found in the recesses of the Internet. I stumbled upon this thing today as it was shared with me by my friend Dave who in turn got it from his friend Shouri. This isn’t photoshopped, this is a real Russian book in which Sailor Moon appears to be beating up an Aztec man. The art is a bit all over the place as Sailor Moon’s costume seems more in line with what she wears in the first season but a lot of the details don’t fit. There is a heart on her tiara, which is similar to what Sailor Chibi Chibi has. Her boots boots look different, she has shorter hair and her weapon looks like the Kaleido Moon Scope despite the fact that this form of Sailor Moon should only have the Moon Stick. Cycyn from the Sailor Moon Obsession Blog also noticed the character’s resemblance to Angelina Jolie, which fits the time frame of the book’s release.

After a little research I discovered this 2001 book is “The Little Sister from Hell” by Andrei Belyanin, a Russian author. The book is the second in a series “My Wife is a Witch” in which a poet marries a librarian who turns out to be a witch! A thorough overview of the book can be found at it’s Russian Wikipedia page (English translation).

Basically what’s going on is that the main character’s wife’s cousin is obsessed with Sailor Moon. When she is accidentally transported to a magical world she becomes Sailor Moon. A really old looking Tuxedo Mask and the Sailor Soldiers are also there, though they are all actually demons. They appear to be fighting for justice but are really causing all sorts of problems. High jynx ensues! I have not found a good place to find a copy of this book but if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

  1. Oh yeah, I didn’t notice the Angelina Jolie resemblance but 2001 was the year Tomb Raider came out, at the height of her popularity, so that would make total sense. I’ll add in a little note…

  2. This is not Sailor Moon. It’s absolutely unrelated fiction. But that book published in begining of 2000’s. These years Sailor Moon has very big popularity in Russia. So author take some characters from SM and main heroine was a big fan of Sailor Moon. We’re has some kind of Guardians here, also with Tuxedo Mask. But plot is very different.

Here a page on Russian Wikipedia dedicateted to that book – http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D1%E5%F1%F2%F0%B8%ED%EA%E0_%E8%E7_%EF%F0%E5%E8%F1%EF%EE%E4%ED%E5%E9

  3. This book can legally be downloaded from the official site of the author :http://www.skiminok.ru/Books/%D0%A1%D0%B5%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D1%91%D0%BD%D0%BA%D0%B0%20%D0%B8%D0%B7%20%D0%9F%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B8%D1%81%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%B5%D0%B9.zip

There were some rumors about this book, for example, about a teen SM fan-artist who helped Andrey in describing the “sailor” characters. Though this has never been confirmed. I’ve asked him about the background behind the plot, maybe he reveals something interesting.

    • He said that he’ve had the idea of such a book before knowing that fangirl, but then he got a letter from her and the main moonie character (the “little sister” who transformed into Sailor Moon and got in trouble with senshi-looking demons) was developed with the help of her bursting enthusiasm. Actually, the main character portraits her in some parts. The girl’s name was Luna Reikon and she was a nice writer and manga artist (though seems like her works were never published since there were no manga magazines in Russia at that time).
It’s sometimes surprising how much one fan can do for the fandom :)
