Today, June 30th 2014, at Ript Apparel you can pick up two great looking Sailor Moon shirts for $10. Select Sailor Scout features Sailor Moon, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter in a character select screen reminiscent of old video games such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There are actually already a bunch of Sailor Moon beat ‘em up games of that style which were made in the 90s. This screen is an original design, not one from one of those games. The second shirts is Lunar Express featuring Luna as the Cat Bus from My Neighbour Totoro which we’ve posted about on the site before.

From today until Monday, March 10th, two very cool Sailor Moon shirts are on sale at Arteesel for $12 a piece. Both of these shirts feature a Sailor Moon cat as the Cat Bus from Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro. Sailor Vehicle shows Artemis as the Cat Bus with Sailor V inside and Lunar Express, which has previously sold at The Yetee, features Luna as the Cat Bus with Sailor Moon inside.

Last week’s episode of The Simpsons, “Married to the Blob” which first aired January 12th 2014, contained a Sailor Moon reference! The episode’s plot revolved around Comic Book Guy falling in love with a Japanese woman named Kumiko. During a montage of them galavanting around town and falling in love the two of them are seen cosplaying at the Bi-Mon Sci-Fi Con. Kumiko is wearing a Sailor Moon inspired costume while Comic Book Guy is dressed as the Stargate. The costume does not look like that of any specific Sailor Soldier. It’s colours somewhat resemble Sailor Saturn or Sailor Mercury’s Sailor Fuku but the pigtails are clearly meant to be reminiscent of Sailor Moon’s, though they are black and not blonde. It’s unclear if this is meant to be an authentic costume of a show in The Simpsons universe which is simply Sailor Moon like or if Kumiko is wearing a costume of her original character based on the series Sailor Moon which would in that case fully exist in the Simpsons world.

The episode is riddled with comic and pop culture references including special guests Stan Lee and Harlan Ellison. In this same scene Kumiko even jumps through the Stargate and turns into a Wizard from Hogwarts from the Harry Potter franchise.

This is not the first time Sailor Moon has been referenced on the Simpsons. Back in 2003 Lisa was dressed as Sailor Moon in the intro scene for the episode “‘Tis The Fifteenth Season”. More recently in 2011 in the episode “Holidays of Future Passed” we see a number of Christmas photos throughout the years. 5 years in the future, when Lisa is 13, she is dressed in a purple Sailor Fuku that is similar to Sailor Moon’s outfit, pigtails and all.

This “My Neighbor Luna” shirt, which is a mash up of Sailor Moon and My Neighbor Totoro, is for sale today at Tee Turtle for $12. TeeTurtle works a bit differently than other daily shirt sites in that the shirt will not be pulled after a day but instead will go up in price to $15 for the rest of the week and then up to $20 afterwards.

This shirt was previously sold in May at The Yetee. The artist is Karen Hallion. Check out her Facebook page or deviantART page for more of her stuff.

The shirt is very similar to this rather iconic My Neighbor Totoro poster. Note that the poster features only one girl, as opposed to the scene in the film which has Satsuki waiting for the bus holding Mei on her shoulders. This girl is taller and clearly older than Mei but shorter than Satsuki. She has pig tails, different from Satsuki’s shorter hair style. She’s actually a mix of the two characters from an earlier time in the movie’s development when there was only to be one girl. How this image remained in use as one of the film’s main posters and the cover of the recently released North American DVD and Blu-Ray is a bit of a shock to me considering it features a character that does not exist by the film’s canon. All of that has nothing to do with this shirt though. Buy the shirt and buy My Neighbor Totoro while you’re at it. It’s a great movie, even if the cover is nonsense.

“Lunar Express” has Luna as a giant Cat Bus with Sailor Moon riding inside of her. The Japanese writing on the bus showing the destination says “Luna”. This shirt was done by Machmigo and you can find more of her art on her Facebook page.

“My Neighbor Luna”, has a giant Luna taking the place of Totoro and a relatively small Sailor Moon in the place of Satsuki in the iconic bus stop scene from the film and it’s movie poster. This shirt’s artist is Karen Hallion. You can check out her Facebook page for more of her art.
