Out of all the characters I feel Mercury is poorly constructed, almost rushed even. She just looks…off somehow? Maybe its just the angle in which she is standing in contrast to the direction her head is faced or the way her legs are positioned, but I was sadly disappointed in it. Everyone else looks okay though. My biggest complaint, and as an artist I KNOW this struggle all too well, are the hands. In fact the hands are what my eyes were drawn to first, oddly enough. For someone with much more experience as well as a broad portfolio, I was sad to see this is what she came up with. Compared to her earliest work I first thought ‘WTF’, but given the benefit of the doubt maybe this was the direction they asked her to go instead of letting her bring back her original flare? But I can’t get over the novice work on their poor hands… I just hope the end product is much better or my favorite chapter will have to survive on story alone. At least for me.

She is experienced, times have changes, it for sure won’t look anything like the 90s. Plus she will take in consideration the previous character designs. Season 3 looks very different from 1 and 2 but you can see some of the stuff crossed over between the old and the new style. Tadano can be pretty versatile. It is not pretty, but this is the last thing she did designs for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDKqb9wE2Ns and as you can see it looks miles different than Sailor Moon/ Wedding Peach. I’m sure she can deliver I never liked the 3rd season designs, so I am glad they are changing them. I hope for something slightly more pretty and elegant as Season 3 mouths has always looked frogish to me and profile shots were quite ugly.

As bad as I initially felt about the third season’s designs, I actually think for certain things it captures the manga. At the very least season 3 of crystal made them look like their age compared to even the 90’s anime which made them look much older. I mean there were worse character designers, but it would not have been my choice. I would have just chose someone new that would give it a different look. The last real episode of R is not what I would like to see.

If they had invited her to design back in 2014 most of the dramaand hate would have been avoided, and the show would have been more consistent. But now as thry brought her back and the idea of different art for each season seem to be their goal I wont be surprised if they bring bsck Ikuko Itou for Stars. As for the cancelation I am glad at least for that, although they canceled Rose of Versailles movie, even though they had already released a trailer for it… Expect anything with TROLLei

The third season looked different. but the characters still were influenced by the initial Crystal designs.
