I totally agree. It was a term used before those shows, as it was used by anime fans in the mid to late 90s, but filler wasn’t associated with terribleness until those shows came out. Filler in Sailor Moon was not necessarily bad, same with the aforementioned DBZ, but Naruto and Bleach fans cursed the concept and a lot of people took that experience to project it onto other shows. Filler as a concept is not good or bad, some shows simply do terrible things with it.

I think the reason “filler” gets a bad rap because of Naruto and Bleach.

Dragonball and Z are both painful at times.
I’m getting ready to watch them again after I finish Sailor Moon S (again) and I am so dreading the Frieza arc…
If only I could have afforded Kai instead!

Yeah. Never minded the filler myself. I was also watching some other shows like Dragonball at the time. I called it Drag On Ball. The lack of filler made it just drag on forever. You can go a lot of ways with a series. If you do individual episodic standalone episodes it can work. If you only follow the manga to progress the main story you either have to drag it out or add “filler” which gets a bad name and people can’t stand. I think the original Sailor Moon anime really nailed the ratio making the episodes which advanced the plot meaningful while still having nice stories with good character development and humour which didn’t always advance the season’s arc. But then there’s been such a shift in the way TV stories are told since the early 90s that it’s hard to compare it to shows of today.

This is the kind of stuff I’d have like to have seen added in a new Sailor Moon remake. Crystal would have been awesome with filler stuff like this.
I’m so fickle. Back in the early 2000’s I was always talking about how much better Sailor Moon would have been without the filler and how they should do a faithful adaptation of the manga.
I basically got that and now I can only think of how much better it would have been with some filler.
