Kind of like how certain types of algae only bloom under certain conditions and affect the water around them in catastrophic ways. Nehellenia can’t deal with sunlight and she tires of waiting for Pegasus to be captured, so she decides to put a plan in motion using spider-webs and causes the unnatural eclipse, allowing her to step out of the mirror without getting burned.

With that in mind, she was probably planning on causing the eclipse the whole time, but she was waiting for the Golden Crystal because it would assure her victory. Her move to use the spider webs now when she still didn’t have the Crystal might have been desperation on her part in order to force Pegasus and the Dream Mirror Guardian out into the open.
