The princess Rubina episode (is her country in Eastern Europe or something?) is actually a spoof of the movie Roman Holiday. I don’t know about the Princess Diana inspiration (though they do have some similarities), but there’s definitely more than a hint of Audrey Hepburn as Princess Ann from the movie in Princess Rubina.

Is the Princess Rubina character supposed to be based off of Princess Diana? Her character design just seems to look an awful lot like her to me.

In comparison, Usagi is 4’11” if I remember right. So Makoto’s 5’6″ is pretty tall, plus she hasn’t finished growing yet and the young men in her peer group haven’t all started their own growth spurts, so Mako would often be staring over the heads of her classmates, and some men find that to be very emasculating.

I’ve seriously had men who were significantly shorter than me make total fools of themselves in my presence, up to and including trying to get physically violent to try and regain whatever masculinity I inadvertently stole from them. It’s not common, but it does happen.

All that said, I’m married to a man 6 inches shorter than me and he’s absolutely wonderful. All the height difference means to us is that he rests his head on my shoulder instead of the other way around

Isn’t Makoto just like 5’6″ according to the guides and stuff (I think I’ve seen her mentioned as 5’8″ once too.) I guess in Japan 5’6″ is tall though, since I’m pretty sure that’s the male average height.
I like tall girls, personally…but admit I have a preference for women my own height (5’9″) and shorter.
I guess it’s not an odd thing, after all, many women won’t date guys shorter than them and I’ve known some guys just a bit shorter than me who’ve had trouble with girls having an issue with their height.
Not sure how I feel about it…as long as it’s not hate I don’t really have a problem with preferences.

It seems to be very hard to be a tall woman in Japan, above average height is not seen as a very feminine quality.

Even in the States, there’s a weird stigma about it with some people. I’m a very tall female myself, and I’ve had strange experiences with men who seem to feel either uncomfortable with the height difference or somehow intimidated by it. Tall women seem to aggravate some people’s self-consciousness, but there are a lot of people who think it’s wonderful, so it balances out. Though I don’t believe there’s quite the same balance in Japan.
