I mean in the first dub, they make fun of how weird the monsters are. And they are pretty ridiculous. But what do you expect from an arc that tried to keep its viewership levels steady by focusing on Chibiusa?

People still love Madoka for the plot and not just “becuz its dark”, many really enjoy the show’s plot and depth of the characters on the show. Don’t believe me go see how successful its clones are which thought Madoka was only popular because it was dark. Plus Sailor Moon S wasn’t that dark at all only some episodes, most of it was comedic filler that people wouldn’t want to sit through. Through are many reasons why people wouldn’t watch Sailor Moon S to really care enough “that it wuz darker”

So, his participation in this whole scheme is due to the evil forces giving him life to do their bidding, so he’s sort of “busting” (or defeating/breaking) death.

Or that’s what I always thought, anyway.
